Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 578 - 577: A Teacher of Stern Lessons

Chapter 578: Chapter 577: A Teacher of Stern Lessons

By the time Yan Feifan finished two consecutive puncture and injection surgeries on brain tumor patients from the PLA General Hospital and for Dr. Kevin Vega, it was already past one o’clock on Thursday afternoon.

After a quick lunch, he hurried to the trauma surgery department to see Mrs. Yu.

"You want me to introduce you to a doctor in oral surgery who specializes in macroglossia correction?" Mrs. Yu asked curiously. "I thought your next target department was cardiac surgery."

"Why the sudden change?"

Yan Feifan explained sheepishly, "Mrs. Yu, my goal hasn’t changed. I just need to learn about macroglossia correction surgery first."

"I impulsively agreed to perform one of these surgeries, and it’s scheduled for a month from now."

She shook her head and sighed. "Learning on the fly, and for another department’s specialty, no less. Only you would be bold enough to casually agree to something like that."

Yan Feifan gave an embarrassed smile. "Mrs. Yu, I was being impulsive. I guess I got a little carried away."

"I regretted it afterward, but I’d already given my word. All I can do now is give it my best shot."

"Mrs. Yu, I’m not very familiar with the oral surgery department. I didn’t choose it for my residency rotation."

"Please, could you help me with an introduction?"

The Affiliated Hospital had a total of fifty-three departments of various sizes, spanning internal medicine, surgery, and the medical technology and diagnostic divisions.

Due to time constraints and other factors, it was impossible for any young doctor to rotate through every single department in the hospital.

The Affiliated Hospital had established a rotation curriculum divided into major categories like medicine and surgery.

For young surgeons like Yan Feifan, the rotations were focused primarily on surgical departments.

In addition to the nine mandatory departmental rotations that he had to complete, Yan Feifan also had five elective slots, which were either a choice between two departments or from a larger selection.

At the time, for his rotation in the major sensory organ specialties, he had chosen ophthalmology.

Mrs. Yu chuckled. "Feifan, with your reputation now, do you really need me to waste my breath on an introduction?"

"If you just showed up and announced yourself, every attending physician in oral surgery would be fighting to get you!"

Yan Feifan chuckled. "Mrs. Yu, I’m not exactly a million-dollar bill; I doubt I’ve reached the point where everyone loves me on sight."

"Your introduction is still both necessary and essential."

Mrs. Yu smiled and said thoughtfully, "A doctor who specializes in macroglossia correction surgery, huh?"

She thought for a moment, then a smile broke across her face. "Feifan, given your standards, you’re surely looking for the absolute best."

"For that, you’d be better off asking that pretty girlfriend of yours than asking me!"

’My girlfriend?’

Yan Feifan was confused for a moment before it dawned on him.

"Su Ye? Baining Hospital?"

Mrs. Yu nodded. "Yu Youyi, one of the ’Four Surgical Greats’ of Baining Hospital, is a nationally renowned expert in oral surgery."

"Given your relationship with the Yu Family and Baining Hospital, it should be quite simple for you to consult with Dr. Yu Youyi."

Yan Feifan thought to himself that with his connections to Baining Hospital, a small favor like this should be easy to arrange.

Just then, Mrs. Yu spoke again. "Feifan, I also thought of someone else. Mr. Guo Qi, a retired oral surgery expert from our own hospital who has since passed away, was particularly skilled at macroglossia correction surgery."

"I imagine our hospital’s media archives must have some of the instructional surgical videos that Mr. Guo left behind."

"You could start by finding them and taking a look..."

Having gotten what he came for, Yan Feifan thanked her and was about to leave when Mrs. Yu called him back.

"Hey, Feifan, that patient with hyperhidrosis—what’s his situation? Have you found a solution?"

Yan Feifan explained, "Mrs. Yu, the test results were actually quite good. The severed ends of the sympathetic nerve still respond to micro-current stimulation."

"But I don’t have a good way to reconnect the severed nerves directly. The only option is to rob Peter to pay Paul."

"My proposal is to harvest a section of a sympathetic ganglion from his lower left back and graft it to the site of the severed nerve in his chest."

"There are two problems..."

Yan Feifan elaborated, "This graft surgery can’t be done with minimally invasive techniques. It requires a thoracotomy."

"Also, I can’t guarantee how effective the recovery from the graft will be."

"I already informed Wu Chengye and his parents over the phone yesterday evening."

"They said they need to think it over carefully."

Mrs. Yu nodded gently. "I see."

"Getting a sympathectomy on impulse... trying to reverse it is never that easy."

"So many people insist on doing things they’ll only regret later."

After a moment of reflection, Mrs. Yu suddenly switched to a teasing tone. "Oh, Feifan, I heard that some clueless rich kid tried to openly challenge you for Yu Suye yesterday evening?"

She tutted. "With Yu Suye’s looks and figure, she definitely has femme fatale potential. Marrying her might mean you’ll never have a moment’s peace at home."

"My Xia Min, on the other hand, is perfect wife material."

"Feifan, are you sure you don’t want to reconsider?"

Yan Feifan ignored Mrs. Yu’s sudden turn for the inappropriate, his expression soured, and he quickly made his exit...

After leaving the trauma surgery department, Yan Feifan headed straight for the rear of the hospital complex.

The Media Archives were located in the library in the Affiliated Hospital’s teaching district, just west of the main educational building.

The library was a nine-story, light-gray building, and the Media Archives occupied an entire floor.

In reality, the old storage media like videotapes and optical discs only took up a single large room.

Besides, all the footage on them had long been digitized.

Most of the floor was dedicated to viewing rooms of various sizes.

There were small viewing rooms for fewer than ten people, as well as large screening rooms where over a hundred people could study and hold discussions.

For individuals, there was a large, open-plan room, similar to an internet cafe, with individual cubicles, each equipped with a widescreen high-definition monitor.

The medical media here was a priceless treasure accumulated by the Affiliated Hospital over many years. Copying any material or taking it out of the viewing rooms was strictly forbidden without special application and approval.

Yan Feifan swiped his access card to enter the library, took the elevator to the seventh floor, and went to the administrator’s desk to request a small viewing room.

"There are none left?"

Yan Feifan was disappointed by the response.

The small viewing rooms had large, clear screens and comfortable chairs. They were like private screening rooms, free from any disturbance.

Somewhat dejected, Yan Feifan was about to get a number to use one of the individual stations in the large room.

Just then, someone walked over from the viewing area.

"Mr. Yan!"

Yan Feifan turned his head and recognized the man: Zhou Xian from cardiac surgery.

More than a month had passed since they had last seen each other at Xinfeng Restaurant, and this was their first meeting since.

"Ah, Dr. Zhou, hello!"

Yan Feifan greeted him, looking him over.

The Zhou Xian before him was noticeably thinner than the last time they’d met. His face was haggard, his eyelids were puffy, and his eyes were bloodshot.

"Dr. Zhou, are you alright?"

Zhou Xian chuckled. "I’m fine. I’ve just been a little busy lately."

He then added with excitement, "Mr. Yan, I have good news! Mr. Liang agreed. He said as long as the patient consents, he’ll let me be the lead surgeon for a heart transplant."

"Mr. Yan, thank you for your eye-opening advice and help!"

Yan Feifan said modestly, "Dr. Zhou, you’re being too kind."

"It was mainly you who thought things through and let go of your burdens. I, at most, just gave you a little nudge in the right direction."

"Judging by your condition, you must have worked incredibly hard these past couple of months to earn Mr. Liang’s approval."

Zhou Xian said emotionally, "After letting go of my burdens and worries, I realized how foolish I’d been. I was the one holding myself back. I can’t blame anyone else."

"Thankfully, it’s better late than never!"

Zhou Xian bowed formally. "Mr. Yan, you gave me the wake-up call I needed."

"I don’t deserve such praise! I really don’t!" Yan Feifan said, stepping aside to decline the gesture.

Zhou Xian straightened up and changed the subject, a happy tone in his voice. "Mr. Yan, I heard you’ll be coming to cardiac surgery soon?"

"Around September," Yan Feifan replied simply.

Zhou Xian murmured, "Oh," then added, "I look forward to seeing you achieve great things in cardiac surgery."

He then said, "I just finished watching a recording of a senior surgeon’s heart transplant. I’m about to head back."

"Here’s the access card for the viewing room."

Elated, Yan Feifan was just about to reach for it when his cell phone rang.

It was a call from the hospital director, Liu Jin.

"Feifan, if you’re not busy, come by my office for a minute..."
