Chapter 643: Chapter 642: A Gift for Apprenticeship
Monday morning, nearly 8:00 a.m. in the Neurosurgery Department at Binhai University Affiliated Hospital.
Dr. Qiu Ge, who had arrived at the office early, took a patient’s treatment record from Yan Feifan’s hands and began reading it intently.
When she was halfway through, her eyelid twitched involuntarily.
"This Xv Fang has some serious nerve. He dared to use infrasound for stimulation therapy without doing any research at all."
Qiu Ge quickly finished the last few pages and said urgently, "Dr. Yan, this Xv Fang is utterly reckless."
"He got lucky this time and avoided a disaster, but he might not be so fortunate the next."
"Don’t you dare go soft on him."
Qiu Ge added, "The fact that he was the first to think of using infrasound to stimulate the brainstem is no big deal."
"Once our audio stimulation research progresses to that stage and we find high frequencies have no effect on comatose patients, we would naturally think to test infrasound for arousal."
"Dr. Yan, Xv Fang can’t be let off easy."
Yan Feifan gave a small smile. "Dr. Qiu, don’t worry. I’ve already made my position clear to the investigation committee."
"He likely won’t be practicing clinical medicine anymore."
After a pause, Yan Feifan changed the subject. "Dr. Qiu, about the sleep-inducing audio research..."
Qiu Ge, catching his drift, replied excitedly, "Although we were briefly sidetracked by the incident with Xv Fang, our work hasn’t been significantly impacted."
"As of last night, we’ve tested a total of 127 volunteers with the sleep-inducing audio."
"For forty-four of them, we identified an audio frequency that made them noticeably drowsy."
Yan Feifan murmured to himself, "’A one-third success rate.’"
Qiu Ge hummed in agreement. "Even at a one-in-three, or even a one-in-four success rate, the commercial market for the Sleep Promotion Device is enormous, given the sheer size of the population."
She paused, then continued, "Dr. Yan, the sleep-inducing frequencies for these forty-four volunteers range from 20,100 to 20,500 hertz."
"But so far, we haven’t found any two individuals with the exact same stimulation frequency."
"It could be because our sample size is still too small, or it could just be due to individual variation."
Yan Feifan hummed in acknowledgment as Dr. Qiu continued, "All of the hundred-plus volunteers so far have been from Binhai University."
"For the next step, we’ll continue recruiting volunteers, but we’ll focus on increasing the proportion of middle-aged and elderly participants from various social backgrounds."
"We may also conduct some tests on adolescents and children, depending on how things go."
"We’re aiming to have detailed data across all age groups within a month or two."
Yan Feifan nodded. "The more detailed the data, the better."
"As for the research funding, I’ll take care of it. There won’t be any shortages..."
After they discussed some specific details about the R&D project, Yan Feifan left.
However, before leaving, Yan Feifan gave Dr. Qiu the medical file of a brain tumor patient.
The patient was Ai Bo’s fifty-five-year-old mother.
At Baining Hospital, unable to refuse Ai Bo’s pleading, Yan Feifan had reviewed the mother’s case files and, in a moment of compassion, agreed to take her on.
Qiu Ge quickly glanced through the file and said she would fit the patient’s surgery into her schedule as soon as possible.
Yan Feifan left the neurosurgery department and headed to Qin Ying’s medical teaching and research office on the second floor of the emergency department.
In the hallway outside the office, Yan Feifan saw Li Yun, his government contact.
"What do you want now?"
Yan Feifan knew they never appeared before him without a reason.
Li Yun chuckled. "Dr. Yan, you sound rather resistant. Do you have a problem with us?"
Yan Feifan snorted. "When you show up, it means there’s a special situation that needs handling, and my regular work schedule gets thrown out the window."
"Do you have any idea how physically damaging this kind of emergency work is? I have no desire to die young."
Yan Feifan was just taking his anger out on Li Yun.
When he was repairing the satellite yesterday morning, Yan Feifan, driven by a sense of duty and honor, had pushed himself to the absolute limit without any regard for the consequences.
But last night, after he woke up and had dinner, he’d gone back to bed. Unable to fall asleep again, Yan Feifan couldn’t help but reflect on his actions.
The memory filled him with a lingering fear.
’Damn it, my heart had been pounding at the time. If I hadn’t been so afraid of dying and pulled back at the last second, I might have just dropped dead right then and there.’
On top of that, it had triggered his deeply buried fears, causing him to have a full-blown panic attack.
This morning, by carefully tuning into his drained physical and mental state, Yan Feifan had come to a realization.
Yesterday’s ordeal had definitely taken a toll on his vitality.
At the very least, the last month or two of restorative Chinese medicine he’d been taking had gone to waste.
Li Yun fell silent for a moment before saying slowly, "Dr. Yan, I will pass your concerns on to my superiors."
"The reason I’m here today is about the person from the United Kingdom we mentioned a few days ago..."
Yan Feifan cut him off. "Did you reach an agreement?"
Li Yun nodded. "We did. One million US dollars. The surgery will take place at the United Kingdom’s consulate here in Binhai."
"As for the timing, they want to do it as soon as possible. They also need at least two days’ notice to make the necessary arrangements."
"For the surgery itself, only you will be needed, Dr. Yan. They will be responsible for arranging the surgical team and everything else."
Yan Feifan acknowledged with a soft "Oh." "Have them send the patient’s case files to my email address as soon as possible."
"Anything else?"
Li Yun hesitated for a moment before shaking his head. "No, that’s all."
"Dr. Yan, I’ll be going then. Goodbye..."
Yan Feifan spent the entire morning in the research office, practicing on tongue specimens in preparation for a macroglossia correction surgery.
When lunchtime arrived, he and Yu Suye headed to Staff Cafeteria No. 1 to eat.
On the way, Yu Suye commented casually, "Feifan, about this macroglossia correction surgery... you’ve watched Mr. Guo Qi’s surgical videos and you’ve practiced on specimens. Do you really still need to formally study under a mentor?"
"I do!"
Yan Feifan sighed. "Watching videos and practicing by myself can only get me so far. There are always gaps. I still need to learn it systematically."
He said, vexed, "In the Oral Surgery Department, the only person I’m somewhat familiar with is attending physician Ge Xianghui."
"The problem is, his mentor is just a rather ordinary associate chief physician."
"As far as I know, the top expert in macroglossia correction surgery in the Oral Surgery Department right now is Chief Physician Peng Zhanghua."
"I don’t know the man at all!"
Yu Suye couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "You might not know him, but I’m sure he knows you."
"With your current fame and status, if you approach him respectfully as a student seeking guidance, he’d surely be honored and delighted."
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but express his doubt. "Su Ye, isn’t that a bit presumptuous? And a little arrogant?"
"Doctors at the chief physician level all have real skills; they don’t have to answer to anyone."
"If they don’t like you, they’ll turn away the president himself."
Yu Suye took out her phone and started tapping the screen. "You do have a point."
"Just to be safe, I’ll ask about his preferences and close friends in my work group chat."
Yan Feifan glanced at her work group chat and asked in surprise, "246 members! How does your group chat have so many people?"
Yu Suye giggled. "I got pulled into it. It’s all young doctors, mostly residents and attendings."
"Oh, someone replied."
Yu Suye softly read the reply message, "’If you really need a favor from Dr. Peng, you can give him some really good liquor. The better the vintage, the more effective it’ll be.’"
"Liquor?"
Yan Feifan frowned. "For a surgeon, being fond of drinking is not a good habit."
Yu Suye shot him a look. "I’m not done reading."
She paused, then continued, "’Dr. Peng himself doesn’t really drink, but he’s famously henpecked in his department.’"
"’His wife is a very devoted daughter, and her father loves fine liquor.’"
It dawned on Yan Feifan. He then heard Yu Suye say cheerfully, "Perfect! Feifan, when those two military officers brought you back yesterday, they also dropped off four bottles of aged Maotai. You can take one to give as a gift."
Yan Feifan was confused. "Really? I don’t remember that at all," he asked, seeking confirmation.
As they were talking, they arrived at the cafeteria entrance.
Just then, a man burst out from inside, nearly colliding head-on with Yan Feifan.
"I’m sorry... oh, Dr. Yan..."
The man was Zhou Xian from Cardiac Surgery. Seeing it was Yan Feifan, he exclaimed excitedly, "Dr. Yan! I just got the news!"
"My patient got a heart! He got a heart!"
