Chapter 655: Chapter 654: My Team, I Call the Shots
At ten o’clock on Friday morning, the new leadership of the Affiliated Hospital passed a resolution, announcing personnel changes for the directors and deputy directors of seven departments, including the Plastic Surgery Center, Trauma Surgery, and Neurosurgery.
The hospital staff reacted to the announcement with relative calm, as plenty of rumors had already been circulating.
However, many were buzzing with discussion about Wang Chuan being removed from his post at the Plastic Surgery Center.
After all, at just over forty, Wang Chuan was in the prime of his career.
Furthermore, the Plastic Surgery Center had developed rapidly under his leadership over the past few years, becoming one of the top three in the nation. It was arguably the Affiliated Hospital’s most renowned department nationwide.
Especially in the last two or three months, thanks to Yan Feifan’s meteoric rise, the Plastic Surgery Center had been poised to become number one in the nation.
This change had many in the hospital wondering...
’What kind of massive mistake could Wang Chuan have made?’
’And would he, out of indignation, just up and resign?’
At that very moment, Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge were in a small conference room of the Disciplinary Inspection Commission, located in the hospital’s main administration building, for a joint hearing with the Ethics Committee, the Health Commission’s Disciplinary Committee, and the hospital’s own Disciplinary Committee.
It was called a hearing, but it was really a session of criticism and self-criticism.
The leaders from the three committees, representing discipline and regulations, sternly criticized Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge for the managerial problems with their R&D project.
Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge, for their part, engaged in self-criticism and proposed corresponding corrective measures.
The entire process was solemn and formal, lasting a little over twenty minutes.
The hearing concluded with both Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge receiving an official demerit, ending the admonishment.
During the informal discussion that followed, the representatives from the Ethics Committee and the Health Commission dropped their stern expressions and became quite affable.
They revealed that the audio-hypnosis and awakening research project would pass the relevant municipal science and technology department approvals by next week. It would be designated a major municipal research project, receiving R&D funding support of at least ten million yuan.
The representative from the Ethics Committee also made a point of stating that as long as the application materials were complete, obtaining special approval for clinical trials would not be a major problem.
After all, this was an experimental treatment based on a medical procedure, not drug development, so any unforeseeable consequences were considered controllable.
To put it bluntly, even if this experimental awakening therapy had severe adverse effects, it would only harm the test subject.
Moreover, the test subjects were patients in a deep, vegetative-state coma.
Drug development, however, was a different story. It affects a broad population and carries greater potential for hidden dangers, so all possible side effects need to be identified.
Therefore, the development cycle for new drugs is exceptionally long, measured in years at a minimum.
In contrast, new surgical procedures and treatment methods are relatively easier to approve and are subject to far more lenient regulations.
They also expressed their shared disdain for the actions of Dr. Xv Jiande of Jingcheng Union Medical College Hospital, saying they looked forward to Yan Feifan achieving a breakthrough in his audio-hypnosis and awakening research soon and bringing glory to Binhai’s medical community.
Close to eleven in the morning, Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge, now with demerits on their records, left the conference room together.
"Mr. Yan, there are regional rivalries everywhere,"
Qiu Ge said softly. "When it comes to research, Jingcheng has an unrivaled advantage. They’ve always looked down on us from their lofty perch, as if all other mountains are small."
"They’ve formed their own big clique over there."
"Within that circle, they all help each other get ahead. As for us... you couldn’t call it overt suppression, but their bias is still obvious."
"For example, for projects of a similar caliber, their chances of receiving R&D support from national ministries are several times higher than ours."
Yan Feifan nodded in understanding as Qiu Ge continued, "This dispute we have with Xv Jiande..."
Qiu Ge sighed softly. "Even though we’re in the right, we don’t have conclusive proof. Given Xv Jiande’s reputation and status, most of the northern medical community will likely still support him..."
Just then, the resident lawyer, Gong Hai, walked over to them.
"Mr. Yan, Dr. Qiu, there’s something I need to remind you of..."
Gong Hai said gravely, "Given that the injury assessment for the patient who awoke from a vegetative state will likely classify as a ’serious injury’..."
"If the other party files a lawsuit, this could become a criminal case."
"In our country, criminal cases take precedence."
"If that happens, our dispute with Xv Fang over ownership of the project’s results will likely be postponed."
"This postponement could last for weeks, maybe even months. After all, we can’t be sure when that patient’s brain degeneration will finally run its course..."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge couldn’t help but exchange a glance.
"Mr. Yan, we have to accelerate the infrasound awakening research."
"As things stand, whoever produces results first will have the advantage of establishing a fait accompli..."
Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge briefly discussed the research project before parting ways.
Yan Feifan hurried to the office area on the third floor of the Plastic Surgery Center.
He walked up to the director’s office and was about to raise his hand to knock when he noticed the brass plaque on the door had been changed from "Director’s Office" to "Dr. Wang Chuan’s Office."
’They sure are efficient. At least he doesn’t have to change offices.’
Yan Feifan sighed to himself, knocked twice, and pushed the door open without waiting for a response.
As the door swung open, Yan Feifan saw Wang Chuan sitting on a sofa in the guest area, sipping tea and chatting with a visitor.
The visitor was a plain-featured older man, likely in his fifties or sixties, with a stiff, salt-and-pepper crew cut.
Dressed in simple summer clothes, he didn’t look particularly remarkable, aside from a few deep-set wrinkles etched into his face and a piercing gaze.
Hearing the door open, the old man looked up, his eyes meeting Yan Feifan’s. His stern face immediately broke into a smile.
"Well, well, our genius doctor has arrived."
Yan Feifan quickly walked over and said respectfully, "Mr. Shi, hello."
This was Shi Min, the soon-to-be-retired associate professor from Binhai University Medical College, famously known as the "King of Killers."
He was also the person Wang Chuan had recommended to manage Yan Feifan’s work team—an advisor to cover for his weaknesses.
"Yan Feifan, you’ve done well. I’ve been hearing your name quite a bit lately."
Shi Min gestured to the adjacent sofa with a small laugh. "Have a seat."
Yan Feifan acknowledged with a sound and sat down obediently.
Shi Min smiled again and asked, "I know you all are secretly planning a retirement party for me. I hear you’re one of the organizers?"
Yan Feifan answered honestly, "Mr. Shi, I’m an organizer in name only. I haven’t done a thing. I just have to show up."
Shi Min chuckled. "I figured as much. You’re the type to tune out the rest of the world, so how could you be so enthusiastic about organizing my retirement party?"
"I doubt I’m that important to you, after all."
Yan Feifan just gave a sheepish grin.
Shi Min’s smile vanished, and he said seriously, "Yan Feifan, before you arrived, Dr. Wang already told me everything I need to know."
"Now, I want to hear your thoughts on the matter."
Yan Feifan said thoughtfully, "Mr. Shi, as my responsibilities in various areas grow, I need a team to assist me."
"And with more people, there’s more administrative work."
"My schedule is already tight, so I don’t have much energy to handle team affairs. Besides, I’m not very good at managing people."
"It would be ideal if you, Mr. Shi, could help me manage the team, and give me advice and reminders when I do something wrong."
"However, Mr. Shi, there’s something I need to make clear upfront..."
"Oh? What’s that?" Shi Min asked, curious.
Yan Feifan said with a serious expression, "Mr. Shi, you may be my teacher, but this is my team, and I’m the one who calls the shots."
"You have the right to give advice as much as you want, but once I make a decision, it’s final. It must be executed."
Shi Min’s gaze sharpened. "Even if your decision is wrong?" he asked.
Yan Feifan met his gaze without flinching. "Even if it’s wrong, it must be executed."
Then, Shi Min and Yan Feifan were locked in a staring contest.
Wang Chuan, who was sitting to the side, showed no intention of intervening, simply sipping his tea with a leisurely air.
A minute or two later, Shi Min was the first to look away.
"You brat. You really are the hothead who dared to openly defy that old fellow Lo Jun."
Shi Min then nodded in satisfaction. "However, someone without a mind of their own can never accomplish anything great."
He then shook his head and sighed. "I was planning on spoiling my grandchildren and living a nice, leisurely life after retirement."
"But to keep others from leading you astray, I guess I’ll just have to work hard for a few more years..."
