Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 722 - 721: Assigning Homework

Chapter 722: Chapter 721: Assigning Homework

At nearly eight o’clock on Friday morning, Yan Feifan arrived at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department with Yu Beihua, Pan Jichuan, Zhu Jian, Li Tianlin, and Berry.

Today, Yan Feifan’s main task at the department was to continue working with its five top surgeons to advance, refine, practice, and master the dual-surgeon heart transplant procedure.

In the words of Mr. Liang, Gu Lin, and the others, a surgical method this good had to be perfected while the iron was hot. They needed to refine it flawlessly in one fell swoop, put it into practice, and then promote it to the world for the benefit of all patients.

When Yan Feifan led his students to the surgical practice room in the Cardiothoracic Surgery building, he found that Mr. Liang, Gu Lin, Deng Chunming, and the other two were already there, waiting for him.

He first offered a quick apology before handing a patient’s medical file to Mr. Liang.

"Mr. Liang, this is a case file for a request for help received by the Extraordinary Public Welfare Fund. It’s for a five-year-old boy with complex cardiac ectopia."

This was the little boy that Tang Jun, the editor-in-chief of the Binhai Medical Journal, had mentioned.

After the Extraordinary Public Welfare Fund received the relevant documents, He Junxing followed Yan Feifan’s instructions and verified the information from multiple sources.

Last night, Yan Feifan received the investigation report submitted by He Junxing.

The report stated that the young patient’s parents were both farmers from a small town, and their main source of income was migrant labor.

Given their current financial situation and income level, they could not afford the child’s medical expenses, which would exceed one million yuan.

After this brief introduction, Yan Feifan continued, "Mr. Liang, could you and the other senior doctors take a look first? I’d like to know what the chances are of successfully treating this child."

"I’m going to assign my students their tasks first. I’ll be right back."

Liang Zhao Kui took the file and nodded. "As you requested, their practice room has been arranged. It’s right next door."

"You can just take them over there."

Yan Feifan said his thanks and led Yu Beihua, Pan Jichuan, and the others to the room next door.

This was a training and practice room. In total, there were eleven standard practice stations, one on the lecture platform and the rest arranged in the room.

On five of these stations, specimens and instruments for practice had already been laid out according to Yan Feifan’s requirements.

Strictly speaking, this was Yan Feifan taking advantage of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department’s resources.

For one, Yan Feifan’s medical research office was too small. It only had space for daily office work, with no dedicated teaching, practice, or lab areas of its own.

If Yan Feifan wanted to conduct any hands-on teaching, he had to borrow a classroom in the hospital’s main educational building.

This required him to submit an application in advance, which was quite a hassle.

For another, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department was wealthy and well-established.

The entire floor Yan Feifan was on now was filled with training rooms and laboratories for teaching, practice, and experiments.

This had given Yan Feifan a little idea.

He had tentatively mentioned to Mr. Liang that he wanted to borrow a practice room, and the latter had readily agreed.

Yan Feifan walked up to the first station in the room, picked up a scalpel, and with a few swift cuts, deftly sliced the fresh heart specimen on the metal tray into five pieces.

"Pan Jichuan, your task is to suture this heart back together."

"Yes, Teacher!"

After acknowledging the order, Pan Jichuan stood at the station and began preparing for the cardiac suture.

The other four followed Yan Feifan to the second station, where a severed hand lay on the metal tray.

"Li Tianlin, completely dissect out the entire vascular network system from this hand."

"No problem, Teacher!" Li Tianlin looked like he was rubbing his hands together, eager to start.

The practice specimens on the metal trays at the third and fourth stations were identical: several large pieces of skin.

Furthermore, on these two stations, there were also two rubber mannequin heads with only the rough outlines of facial features, as well as a large block of modeling clay.

"Zhu Jian, Berry, your job is to stitch together a human-skin mask."

After a pause, Yan Feifan added, "You’ll be each other’s models."

Hearing this, Zhu Jian and Berry looked at each other for a few seconds.

Then, they both took a step closer to one another and, without a word, reached out to feel each other’s faces.

On the fifth station, there was no metal tray with a specimen, only a drawing board with paper clipped to it and a few sketching pencils.

This left Yu Beihua completely bewildered. He couldn’t help but ask, "Teacher, what is the assignment you have for me?"

Yan Feifan took out his phone and tapped the screen a few times.

It was a new phone with a new number.

He had given his previous phone and its old number to Duan Yu, who would use it to filter most of his calls.

Of course, those close to Yan Feifan had already been given his new number, which he had just gotten yesterday afternoon.

Putting his phone away, Yan Feifan said to Yu Beihua, "I just sent a set of cerebral angiograms to your email. I want you to draw a three-dimensional perspective view of the cerebral vasculature."

"Oh," Yu Beihua said, a look of understanding dawning on his face. He quickly took out his phone to check his email.

Originally, Yu Beihua was supposed to stay at the Little Red House to monitor the patient receiving an intracranial blood clot ablation agent via drip in the sterile ward.

However, to allow him to participate in this teaching session, Yan Feifan had specially asked Qin Feng to help watch over the patient.

Anyway, Mr. Qin also needed to look after the cervical spine tumor surgery patient in the nearby ICU.

For him, it was just a matter of walking a few extra steps and taking a few quick looks.

Of course, that was assuming no unexpected complications arose.

So far, none of the patients Yan Feifan had treated had ever experienced sudden adverse postoperative reactions.

But this request also made Yu Beihua realize something.

This was the first time the five of them had gathered together, and it surely wasn’t just to complete the simple homework their teacher assigned.

This made him focus his mind completely, ready to take it with the utmost seriousness...

After assigning the tasks to the five students one by one, Yan Feifan didn’t waste any more words and walked back to the surgical practice room next door.

"Feifan..."

Seeing him return, Liang Zhao Kui began, "This young patient’s condition is quite complex. Not only is it cardiac ectopia, but it’s also accompanied by a severe ventricular septal defect and great vessel malformation."

"Furthermore, his lungs, diaphragm, sternum, and ribs also show varying degrees of developmental abnormalities."

"This will be a major, multi-departmental collaborative surgery led by our Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, involving General Surgery and Orthopedics."

"Given the child’s frail condition, the surgical risks are very high."

Yan Feifan grunted in agreement. "That’s true. But as the child grows, the strain on his heart will only increase, and his overall health will deteriorate."

"If we operate now, there’s at least a fighting chance."

Liang Zhao Kui nodded. "A case of cardiac ectopia like this is actually a good learning opportunity for you, Feifan."

"If the child’s parents are willing to take the gamble, we can accept the case. It’s just that the success rate..."

At this, Liang Zhao Kui turned his gaze to Deng Chunming.

Deng Chunming mulled it over for a moment before saying, "The child’s constitution is too weak, and the surgery is complex. I’d say there’s only a thirty to forty percent chance."

Yan Feifan said softly, "I will inform the child’s parents of this prognosis. We’ll see what they choose."

Just then, Gu Lin spoke up. "Let’s get to our work."

"Let’s try to perfect the details of the dual-surgeon method today. We’ll practice and familiarize ourselves with it on Saturday and Sunday."

"Come next week, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to put it to use."

Zhang Shi’an eagerly agreed, "Let’s get started..."
