Chapter 729: Chapter 728: Strength Is Supreme
Zhang Run’s ex-wife, Luo Di, was forty-one years old. Aside from being noticeably thin, she was in good spirits.
Her eyes were bright. Though she wore no makeup, her hair was tidy and her clothes were appropriate. She had kept herself looking very put-together.
Her physical condition was also decent. She walked with a steady gait, not so weak and sickly that she needed someone to support her.
This made Yan Feifan nod to himself.
He’d seen plenty of patients at the hospital who, upon hearing they had been diagnosed with a malignant cancer, would immediately fall apart.
It was like someone had flipped their power switch off. Suddenly, they couldn’t walk and even needed to be fed.
Their spirit had collapsed long before the disease could crush them.
Yan Feifan knew that patients whose spirits had broken like this would never outlive the average survival period.
When it came to fighting cancer, spirit and willpower played just as significant a role as scientific and rational treatment.
At Yan Feifan’s instruction, Luo Di followed the young nurse, Xv Shuang, to a private room on the tenth floor, Room 6. She changed into a hospital gown and lay down on the bed, trying to relax.
She needed to lie perfectly still for at least half an hour.
The purpose of this was to allow her internal organs to settle into their most stable, resting positions.
Whether a person is sitting, lying down, or moving, their internal organs shift slightly in position and shape.
Since Zhang Run had requested a precision injection, Yan Feifan had to get every detail right to achieve the best possible outcome.
In his office on the ninth floor, Yan Feifan spread the MRI scans Zhang Run had brought across the light box and examined them closely.
Zhang Run explained softly from the side, "By the time we found it during a check-up, it was already too late."
"We found metastatic tumors in the anterior lobe of her right liver and the upper-middle part of her left kidney. A mastectomy was pointless by then."
"Now, all we can do is provide systemic supportive care and play it by ear—suppressing tumors as they appear, maintaining organ function, and delaying the failure of metastatic organs for as long as possible."
After he finished speaking, Zhang Run handed several sheets of paper to Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, these are one-to-one scale projection drawings of the five tumors where the drug needs to be delivered. The puncture routes and depths are marked."
"If the puncture can be performed exactly as marked on these diagrams, the result would be perfect."
Yan Feifan took the papers and examined the projections one by one: the tumor on the anterior lobe of the right liver, the tumor on the upper-middle part of the left kidney, and the three breast tumors.
He compared these projections to the three-dimensional model he had formed in his mind and stated bluntly, "Mr. Zhang, there are some discrepancies between these diagrams and the actual scans."
"Furthermore, the puncture routes are not optimal."
"So..."
Yan Feifan’s gaze returned to the light box, and he failed to notice the souring expression on Zhang Run’s face.
"I’ll draw the tumor projections. You can decide the depth and location for the drug injection."
"I will determine the puncture routes."
Zhang Run let out a slow breath. "Mr. Yan, to be honest, my team and I spent an entire day repeatedly refining these projections."
"While I can’t guarantee they’re a one hundred percent match to the real thing, the margin of error is certainly minuscule."
Zhang Run then added a reminder, "Mr. Yan, you’ve looked at these MRI scans for less than ten minutes, all told."
Yan Feifan turned to meet the man’s questioning gaze. "Mr. Zhang, you should know that the time it takes to analyze scans has very little to do with the accuracy of the conclusion."
"When it comes to reading scans and understanding human anatomy, I am quite confident in my abilities."
He waved the papers in his hand. "Overall, these projections are decent, but they aren’t precise enough."
"Mr. Zhang, didn’t you come to me to strive for the absolute best, for perfection?"
Zhang Run fell silent for a moment. "Mr. Yan, your specialty is puncture procedures for spinal canal and brain tumors."
"There’s no evidence that your understanding of the visceral organs is on the same microscopic level."
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but frown at his words.
He retorted bluntly, "Mr. Zhang, if you don’t trust my skills, why did you bother coming to me in the first place?"
"If your team can produce projections of this quality, you shouldn’t be short on surgeons of this caliber!"
Just then, Shi Min spoke up.
"Zhang Run, you should know that the brain is the most precise and complex organ in the human body."
"Mr. Yan handles the brain with an ease others can only dream of. The body’s other organs are naturally no challenge for him."
"How could you be so confused?"
Shi Min’s question snapped Zhang Run out of it.
He quickly bowed in apology. "Mr. Yan, please don’t be angry. I was overcome with worry and lost my composure."
"For a moment, I forgot that in medicine, skill is everything."
"You either have the skill or you don’t. A hundred amateurs are no substitute for a single master."
"Mr. Yan, I shouldn’t have questioned you!"
"From now on, we’ll do everything exactly as you say!"
Seeing Zhang Run still bowed before Yan Feifan, Shi Min sighed. "Feifan, please try to understand. The patient is his ex-wife and the mother of his child. It’s only normal for him to get emotional."
"Besides, if someone casually dismissed something you’d prepared so meticulously, you’d be upset too."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment. "Let’s get to work. I promised someone I’d be home early this evening..."
Following that, Yan Feifan made a series of modifications directly onto Zhang Run’s projection diagrams.
Then, on the newly modified diagrams, Zhang Run re-plotted the drug delivery points.
Of course, the adjustments to the delivery points were minor. The largest deviation was only three millimeters.
Nevertheless, just to account for this three-millimeter change, Zhang Run deliberated for over half an hour, sweat beading on his forehead.
At five in the afternoon, Yan Feifan, Zhang Run, Zhu Jian, and Xv Shuang arrived at Room 6. They found Luo Di lying flat on the hospital bed, already fast asleep.
Seeing her sleeping so soundly, Zhang Run sighed with a mix of pity and affection, then opened the medical case he had brought.
He took out a canister of inhalation anesthetic, attached a mask, and carefully administered it to the sleeping Luo Di.
Afterward, Zhang Run took out five specially made Puncture Needles from the case, along with the mysterious anti-cancer drug.
Yan Feifan saw that the anti-cancer drug consisted of tiny brown pellets, each only half a millimeter in diameter.
While portioning out the dose, Zhang Run counted the pellets one by one, re-checking the count several times with extreme care.
Once Zhang Run finished his preparations, it was time for Yan Feifan to perform the puncture.
The first target was the tumor on the anterior lobe of the right liver.
Yan Feifan first used a portable ultrasound machine and manual palpation to confirm the exact position of the anterior lobe of the right liver.
Then, he sterilized the selected puncture site.
Next, Yan Feifan took the Puncture Needle from Zhang Run. Without the slightest hesitation or any preliminary motion, he seemed to casually pick an angle and insert the needle at a constant speed.
The sight made the veins on Zhang Run’s forehead throb.
But he managed to hold his tongue.
A moment later, Yan Feifan stopped the insertion. He removed the cap from the back of the needle and withdrew the inner stylet.
Then, he poured the pellets Zhang Run had prepared into the hollow needle, reinserted the stylet, and used it to push all of the medicine to the very tip...
Yan Feifan repeated this puncture and delivery process four more times. The entire procedure took nearly thirty minutes.
"Mr. Yan, thank you!"
Zhang Run said gratefully, "Now, if Luo Di can just sleep for another hour, I can wake her up, and she can go home."
"Um, Mr. Yan, are you free tomorrow?"
"I really must thank you properly!"
Yan Feifan waved his hand. "There’s no need for that. I’m just very eager to see your new anti-cancer drug achieve great results."
"It will, Mr. Yan," Zhang Run replied with conviction.
A little after six in the evening, Yan Feifan and Duan Yu returned to their apartment at Zuimo Court to find the place was quiet.
The living room was empty.
When Yan Feifan went back to his own room, he found Yu Suye sprawled out on his bed, fast asleep...
