Chapter 758: Chapter 757: I’d Rather You Didn’t Say It
The moment he set down the needle holder, Yan Feifan glanced at the clock on the wall.
4:26 PM. The surgery had lasted seven hours and thirty-four minutes.
The surgery was over!
As a wave of relief washed over Yan Feifan, an unstoppable tide of exhaustion swept through his body.
He swayed involuntarily, and his vision blurred and darkened.
However, after a couple of seconds, Yan Feifan steadied himself, and his vision cleared.
Yan Feifan looked up at Wang Chuan, who had taken two steps toward him, and said proudly, "See? I didn’t go straight into shutdown mode."
"I made it."
Wang Chuan, who had halted his advance, said with amusement, "What’s there to brag about? Look at you. Even if you haven’t shut down, you’re pretty much running on fumes."
"Hurry up and get to the locker room to rest."
Yan Feifan glanced at Zhu Jian, signaling for him to handle the rest, then stumbled away from the operating table, his legs feeling as if he were walking on cotton.
He had only taken a few steps from the table when Wang Chuan came forward and supported his arm.
Yan Feifan didn’t pretend he was fine. He leaned most of his weight against Wang Chuan as they walked out of the operating room...
Yan Feifan immediately cleared his mind, quickly washed up, and gulped down two glasses of water. Then he lay down on a long, padded bench in the locker room, not wanting to move a muscle.
"The state you’re in, you’re no different from a dead dog."
Wang Chuan teased, feeding Yan Feifan a piece of dark chocolate before sitting on the long bench across from him.
"Yanyan’s facial reconstruction surgery, you estimated it would take eleven to twelve hours."
"Will you be able to handle that?"
Yan Feifan swallowed the chocolate in his mouth and said listlessly, "That’s still two or three months away. My body will be able to handle it by then."
"What about Tang Zheng’s surgery?" Wang Chuan pressed.
Yan Feifan barely lifted his eyelids. "We’ll do it in two sessions. Like you said, Chuan, it’s not a life-or-death emergency surgery."
"He can stay in a sterile room for a day, and we can continue after I’ve rested. That’s also an option."
Wang Chuan nodded and sighed softly. "A plastic surgeon getting his own face ruined... talk about irony."
"I guess this will be a harsh lesson for Tang Zheng. Hopefully, he’ll learn from it."
"In the end, a man has to rely on real talent to make his way."
Feeling a bit more recovered, Yan Feifan asked gossipily, "Chuan, has the verdict come in for that case?"
"It was decided not too long ago!"
Wang Chuan said slowly, "The defendant was proactive with compensation, and they reached a settlement in the end. The woman was sentenced to five years."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "Oh," as Wang Chuan continued, "And I’ve got more news for you. Mr. Cheng’s son was sentenced yesterday, too. Convicted on multiple counts, he got twelve years."
Yan Feifan said with a hint of schadenfreude, "That’s what happens when parents fail to discipline their children, and society has to teach them how to behave."
Wang Chuan said ruefully, "I bet Mr. Cheng is filled with regret, but it’s too late for any of that now."
"Twelve years... even with parole, he’ll still have to serve seven or eight years inside. When he gets out, he’ll be completely out of touch with society."
"By then, Mr. Cheng will be retired and won’t have much power left to help his son."
After that, neither of them spoke, and they rested in silence.
A few minutes later, Wang Chuan spoke up hesitantly, "Feifan, did you know that before you woke up, you were in a state of near brain death?"
"You were this close to having all your organs donated."
Yan Feifan smiled. "Of course, I know. My sister used to bring it up all the time."
"She says she actually saved me twice."
"The first time was during my long coma, by taking such meticulous care of me that I didn’t die from complications."
"And the second time was at the final, critical moment, when her heartfelt pleas woke me up, saving me from being carved up for my organs."
Wang Chuan asked tentatively, "Did Ziruo ever tell you about... some of the other circumstances at the time?"
"What other circumstances?" Yan Feifan was puzzled.
Wang Chuan hesitated for a moment before saying, "Feifan, there was a little rumor in the hospital about what happened to you."
"It was just a rumor, and after you woke up—especially as your reputation grew—no one brought it up anymore."
"Chuan, what was the rumor?" Yan Feifan pressed.
Wang Chuan lowered his voice. "The rumor was that your... ordeal... might not have been an accident."
He noticed Yan Feifan’s expression turn serious and continued, "Feifan, after you fell into a coma, your brainwaves were always extremely active, even more so than a normal person’s."
’I’ve known that for a long time.’ He had reasoned that his brainwaves were so active because he had been conscious the entire time in his mindscape, engaged in massive construction projects, and constantly studying and practicing.
Wang Chuan’s voice continued, "At the time, everyone thought your coma was temporary and that you’d wake up soon."
"But we never expected that after more than a year of waiting, you still wouldn’t wake up."
"Then one night, the intensity of your brain activity suddenly plummeted, dropping to the point of near brain death."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan shot up and sat on the padded bench.
"Chuan, are you saying there was foul play?"
Wang Chuan shook his head. "We can’t be certain that there was foul play."
"After all, your brain maintained an extremely high level of activity for a year and three months without you waking up. It’s very possible that it just reached a breaking point and collapsed."
"But there was still that rumor..."
Wang Chuan stared into Yan Feifan’s eyes. "Feifan, you’re not the same person you were back then. No one can touch you now."
"I’m only telling you this now so you’re aware. You can’t let your guard down."
"If the sudden downturn in your brain’s condition was deliberate, then the person behind it must have considerable influence."
Yan Feifan said thoughtfully, "In my state back then, having been in a coma for so long, my chances of waking up were getting smaller and smaller. I wasn’t a threat to anyone."
"The only reason someone would come after me... was for..."
Yan Feifan’s eyes met Wang Chuan’s.
Wang Chuan let out a soft breath. "The only thing left: your relatively healthy organs."
"The black market for human organs is a huge industry abroad."
"Things like that are rare in our country, but it’s impossible to say they’re completely stamped out."
A thought suddenly struck Yan Feifan. "Song Yi’s brother, Song Yan... at the time, he had severe heart failure from an acute viral infection and urgently needed a heart transplant to save his life."
"He has money, and he has connections..."
At this, Yan Feifan shook his head again, reasoning aloud, "But his was an acute case. There are so many comatose patients. How could they be sure my heart would even be a match for him?"
"Song Yi is so close to us, and I’ve met Song Yan a few times myself. I never noticed anything strange in the way either of them looked at me."
"If they’d done something like that, you’d think they’d have a guilty conscience, right?"
Wang Chuan sighed. "That’s one of the reasons I never told you about this suspicion."
"As the potential beneficiary, Song Yan is a prime suspect."
Wang Chuan then speculated, "Perhaps he just paid the money and pulled some strings, without knowing that you were the donor."
"That’s also a possibility!"
Yan Feifan mused, "Anyone on the transplant list at the time is a suspect."
"But I think there’s another, more likely possibility."
"Someone took my blood sample early on, ran the compatibility tests, and was just waiting for me to be declared a lost cause."
"But they waited and waited, and my condition never deteriorated. They couldn’t wait any longer, so they had to take a desperate risk."
Yan Feifan let out a deep breath and said resentfully, "Chuan, I wish you hadn’t told me this."
"Everything was fine before. Ignorance was bliss."
"Now that you’ve told me, I probably won’t be able to sleep. I’ll be dwelling on this constantly."
Wang Chuan gave a sheepish smile and explained, "I just feel that with something like this, you can only be at ease once the truth is out."
"You have the means to investigate this now. If you look into it and find nothing, then that’s great for everyone."
"But if it did happen, the culprit should be punished, and it could prevent more people from being secretly harmed."
As he spoke, he saw Yan Feifan take his phone out of a locker and dial a number.
"Li Yun, I have something else I need to trouble you with..."
