Chapter 762: Chapter 761: Don’t Set Flags
It was 3:00 PM at Yan Feifan’s medical research lab in the Little Red House.
Tang Jun, editor-in-chief of the Binhai University Medical Journal, checked to see if his digital recorder was working properly before placing it on the coffee table, closer to Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, for this exclusive interview, please just treat it as a casual chat. Say whatever comes to mind!"
Tang Jun added, "Once I’ve compiled the draft, I’ll give it to you for review and revision, Mr. Yan."
Yan Feifan hummed in acknowledgment, and Tang Jun continued, "Mr. Yan, I know you’ve been an academic prodigy since you were a child. You skipped grades all through elementary, middle, and high school."
"With your grades back then, you could have had your pick of any program at the nation’s top universities."
"I’m sure many people are curious—what drove you to choose clinical medicine as your major?"
Yan Feifan sighed softly. "I was raised by my grandparents. Back then, they were suffering from stomach cancer and diabetes."
"I naively believed that if I studied medicine, I could cure them."
"It was only after I delved deeper into my medical studies that I realized how naive I had been."
Yan Feifan’s expression grew sorrowful. "I wasn’t able to help my grandparents. They both passed away while I was in college."
Tang Jun said sympathetically, "Mr. Yan, your medical achievements today would surely make them very proud."
After a brief pause, Tang Jun shifted gears. "Mr. Yan, I’d guess that when you first started working at the Affiliated Hospital, you never imagined you would accomplish so much in such a short period."
"You’re so young, and your potential is limitless."
"Perhaps that original goal of yours, finding a definitive cure for stomach cancer and diabetes, is something you’ll achieve in the coming years. Who knows?"
Yan Feifan gave a small smile. "Mr. Tang, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I’d rather not make such bold claims and become a laughingstock."
"It’s better to take things one steady step at a time. I’d rather not say anything sensational or controversial."
But Tang Jun pressed on, "Every medical professional who follows your work knows that you’ve made one near-miraculous breakthrough after another in a very short time."
"If one day you announce that you’ve developed a new treatment for stomach cancer or diabetes, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised."
"Mr. Yan, you have the ability to work miracles..."
Just then, Yan Feifan’s phone rang.
He saw it was a call from Dr. Tan of the neurology department and said apologetically to Tang Jun, "Mr. Tang, I’m sorry, I need to take this."
Tang Jun raised a hand, gesturing for him to proceed.
Yan Feifan answered the call. "Dr. Tan, was he really planning to commit suicide?"
When Xv Fang had clung to him, weeping uncontrollably, it had confirmed some of Yan Feifan’s suspicions.
However, providing psychological support wasn’t his forte, so he had no choice but to seek help from a professional.
"He had even written a suicide note."
Dr. Tan confirmed over the phone, then added, "But death is always terrifying. Mr. Yan, your words of concern helped him feel a sense of human connection again."
"That good, long cry was both a release and the mark of a new beginning."
"I don’t think he’ll do anything foolish again."
Yan Feifan felt a wave of relief at her words and asked, "Dr. Tan, does he need someone to stay with him?"
"He probably doesn’t want to be with his parents right now."
Dr. Tan replied, "He has a few close friends. With his permission, I’ve already contacted one of them."
"His friend said he’ll come get him as soon as he can..."
Reassured about the arrangements for Xv Fang, Yan Feifan ended his call with Dr. Tan and returned to the interview...
"Mr. Yan, let’s discuss the dual-surgeon heart transplant technique that you developed."
"The cardiothoracic surgery department has now confirmed its viability and efficiency over the course of three operations."
"Two of those were completed in under four and a half hours, achieving the goal of shortening the operating time."
"For such an efficient and practical surgical method to be developed by a young doctor like you, Mr. Yan, with relatively little clinical experience in cardiac surgery... it sounds almost unbelievable, don’t you think?"
Yan Feifan smiled. "First, let me correct one thing. This surgical method wasn’t my work alone."
"It was a collaborative effort between myself and several doctors from the Affiliated Hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery department: Dr. Liang, Dr. Gu, Dr. Deng, Dr. Ni, and Dr. Zhang."
"Without the hard work and dedication of those five senior surgeons, we wouldn’t have such a well-refined surgical protocol!"
"As for how I came up with the dual-surgeon method?"
Yan Feifan tapped his head and continued, "I suppose I should let you in on a little secret."
After a pause, Yan Feifan said slowly, "Aside from having a fairly good memory, I’ve always had a tendency to let my mind wander."
"This has given me a fairly realistic capacity for visual simulation and deduction. To put it simply, I can run a complete simulation of an entire surgery in my head."
Tang Jun pressed curiously, "You mean a simulation so vivid that you can see every last detail?"
"Something like that."
Yan Feifan gave a vague reply before explaining, "With the dual-surgeon method, my initial focus was on how to reduce the operating time."
"We all know that in organ transplant surgery, time is of the essence."
"The most basic way to reduce time is to add more hands."
"But if you add more hands, the surgical field is limited, and people can easily get in each other’s way. So, I ran simulations in my head, trying to figure out how two lead surgeons could cooperate effectively to move the procedure forward together."
"By running the simulations over and over, and with the five senior surgeons providing constant feedback from their own practice drills..."
"...that’s how the dual-surgeon method was perfected."
Tang Jun couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh. "Mr. Yan, your brain is like a supercomputer. How can it perform such complex simulations?"
Then, a thought struck him. "So the widely rumored ’Feifan’s Contemplation’... is actually this?"
Yan Feifan nodded in acknowledgment. "It’s me, immersed in my mind, simulating solutions under various conditions to find the optimal one."
Tang Jun let out a long, understanding "Ohhh..." before asking, "But I’ve heard that one of the titans in our country’s traditional Chinese medicine community, Mr. Yu of the Yu Family of Jingcheng, has repeatedly warned you..."
"...that you’re in danger of burning yourself out?"
Yan Feifan nodded. "This way of thinking is like overclocking the brain. It’s incredibly draining."
"Mr. Yu told me to pace myself."
Tang Jun’s expression grew solemn. "Mr. Yan, you’re still so young. You must work within your limits. There’s no need to rush."
Yan Feifan smiled. "Thank you for the concern."
"I’ll exercise more, pay attention to rest and nutrition, and maintain a good work-life balance..."
Tang Jun proceeded to ask several more questions about the dual-surgeon method, all of which Yan Feifan answered in detail.
Toward the end of the interview, Tang Jun turned the topic to the research on using infrasound to awaken patients from deep comas.
"Mr. Yan, I’ve heard a few things."
"Is it true that the study you’re leading has already successfully awakened one patient, and that they’re recovering well?"
Yan Feifan answered cautiously, "The clinical trials are still in the early stages. Awakening a single patient isn’t enough to draw any major conclusions. We need more data..."
Just then, the office door was suddenly thrown open.
The young nurse, Xv Shuang, burst into the room.
"Boss! Boss! Another one woke up!"
