For Yan Feifan, once a plastic surgery plan was finalized, achieving the desired outcome was simply a matter of following the steps. Even Ji Meng’s pursuit of ultimate beauty was no exception.
Ji Meng’s entire surgery didn’t pose any challenge to Yan Feifan, though it did take a bit longer than usual. Lasting seven and a half hours, it took quite a toll on him physically and mentally.
Approaching five in the afternoon, he sluggishly walked out of the surgical area and returned to his office, surprised to find his uncle, Shu Lei, waiting for him.
Yan Feifan looked at his uncle and noticed that after just a few days of not seeing him, his face had tanned considerably. He lazily sat down on the sofa diagonally across from his uncle and asked weakly, “Uncle Lei, are the hospitalization procedures all sorted out?”
“Yeah, they’re all done.” His uncle elaborated, “It’s a single room in the trauma surgery department with a private bathroom. This way, Qingyu can stay with the child.”
Pausing for a moment, Shu Lei asked in confusion, “Feifan, why did you let Su Ye treat Taotao instead of doing it yourself?”
Yan Feifan explained, “Su Ye is nearly as skilled as I am when it comes to limb injuries, especially joint injuries. Besides, this little guy is very likely my cousin. When it comes to family, it’s best to step aside and let someone else operate.”
He then quickly asked, “Uncle Lei, when will the DNA test be done?”
Shu Lei hesitated for a moment before replying, “Let’s wait until after Taotao’s surgery to do the paternity test. I don’t want any unforeseen circumstances to affect his treatment.”
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes and asked, “Uncle Lei, aren’t you going back to see your wife first?”
Shu Lei smiled unnaturally, rubbing his hands together. “I’ll go back after I’m done talking with you. Feifan, give it to me straight. Will Taotao be able to make a full recovery?”
Yan Feifan chuckled lightly. “Uncle Lei, you can put your mind at ease. If Su Ye didn’t have the skills, I wouldn’t have let her perform the surgery.”
“With you saying that, I can finally rest easy!” Shu Lei let out a long sigh of relief and stood up. “Feifan, I’ll be heading back now. Make sure you keep an eye on Qingyu and Taotao,” he couldn’t help but add.
Yan Feifan waved weakly at his uncle, signaling that he understood.
Shu Lei turned to leave, but just as he reached the office door, he suddenly doubled back.
“Feifan, Ziruo told me that you’ve been putting off your pediatric training at the hospital. And now, you’re refusing to take over Taotao’s treatment. Do you have some sort of phobia of children?”
“I just remembered! You’ve been avoiding children ever since you were little,” he exclaimed, as if he’d just made a groundbreaking discovery. “Feifan, you really are afraid of kids!”
Yan Feifan scoffed lightly. “Uncle Lei, I’m not afraid of them. I just don’t like them very much. They cry at the drop of a hat, poop whenever and wherever they please, and they pull hair and bite. But once they pass the age of seven or eight and actually become sensible, I like them just fine.”
Meeting Yan Feifan’s gaze, Shu Lei chuckled. “I still remember a pair of boy-girl twins about your age back then. They were spoiled rotten and always at odds with you. Two against one—you certainly took your fair share of beatings from them. Feifan, you didn’t get traumatized by those two little brats, did you?”
Yan Feifan replied in a slightly exasperated tone, “How is that possible? So many years have passed, I forgot about it ages ago.” He then pointedly reminded him, “Uncle Lei, you’d better start thinking about how you’re going to butter up your wife when you get back! Do you really think it’s possible that she won’t mind?”
After his uncle left, Yan Feifan lay down on the sofa and closed his eyes to rest. But not long after, he heard the connecting door to the main office being gently pushed open, followed by soft footsteps approaching him.
Opening his eyes, Yan Feifan saw Ye Lin. Immediately after, she squatted down and began massaging his shoulders with a flattering expression.
“Mr. Yan, does that feel good?”
“It’s just okay. You’re not using enough strength,” Yan Feifan gave an honest assessment, then asked, “Did you mess up?”
Ye Lin giggled. “Mess up? I’ve been working diligently this whole time. I just wanted to ask you for a favor, Mr. Yan!”
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes, gesturing for her to spit it out.
Ye Lin increased the pressure of her massage and said, “Mr. Yan, my mom’s birthday is in a few days. I originally wanted to show my appreciation by treating her and the rest of the family to a big feast at Meng’s Private Kitchen, but they unexpectedly stopped accepting reservations. Mr. Yan, could you please help me out?”
“What date? How many people?” Yan Feifan asked.
“The ninth, and just seven or eight people.”
Yan Feifan let out a soft “oh” of acknowledgment and said, “Got it. I’ll put in a word for you.”
“Thank you so much, Mr. Yan!” Ye Lin thanked him excitedly, hastily massaged his shoulders a few more times, and then scurried out of the room.
Yan Feifan sat up, feeling a bit exasperated, only to see the young nurse, Xv Shuang, poking her head in through the crack of the connecting door.
“What do you want?”
Xv Shuang giggled and squeezed her way in. “Mr. Yan, when I get off work and feel too lazy to cook, I sometimes eat at a small restaurant near my place. It’s pretty clean, and the prices are reasonable…”
Yan Feifan interrupted, “Get to the point!”
Xv Shuang stuck out her tongue and hurriedly said, “There’s only one waitress at the restaurant. She’s a young girl, about sixteen or seventeen, and quite pretty. It’s just that her right hand…” She gestured with her own right hand. “Her thumb is gone, and she’s missing two joints on her index finger. I asked her about it, and she said she used to work in a small factory where they were sliced off by a machine…”
Yan Feifan interrupted again. “You want me to do a finger reconstruction surgery?”
Xv Shuang quickly shook her head. “Mr. Yan, you’re so busy, and your surgical fees are so high, I wouldn’t dare trouble you with this. Her family is poor, and she came to Binhai all by herself to work. She doesn’t actually earn much each month. I just wanted to ask if her situation meets the requirements for financial aid from the foundation?” She added, “She’s a very hardworking and sweet girl. A couple of days ago, I accidentally left my purse at the restaurant, and she went out of her way to return it to me.”
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but laugh. “She returned your purse, and you’re giving her quite the hefty reward in return.”
Xv Shuang laughed sheepishly.
Yan Feifan thought for a moment and said, “If her situation is really as you described, the foundation can cover three-quarters of the total cost. She can pay back the remaining quarter in installments over five years. As for the surgery itself, I’ll have Su Ye and Li Tianlin take charge of it!”
Xv Shuang’s face lit up with a huge smile. “Thank you, Mr. Yan! I’ll go back and tell her the good news.” Pausing for a moment, she raised her right fist high in the air and cheered, “Mr. Yan is the best! I will devote myself entirely to you, until the day I die!”
Yan Feifan waved her off with a look of disdain. “Hurry up and get out of here. Don’t disturb my rest…”
Another twenty minutes passed before Yu Suye finally arrived, but her expression was grim.
“Feifan, my paper got rejected!” she said. “I asked around, and I was told it wasn’t because of the quality of my paper, but simply because of my relationship with you. I also heard that several medical journals based in Jingcheng are rejecting all submissions from our Affiliated Hospital. Word has it that the rectification of the Jingcheng medical community, brought about by Xv Jiande, has caused them to band together in a united front to boycott us…”
