Chapter 450: Chapter 450: Discussing Business, Investigation Results
Hua Yulin had no complaints whatsoever.
The good news from Hua Yufen’s letter put the entire Hua family in high spirits throughout dinner. With Zhao Nuanyue chiming in with witty remarks, the air was filled with constant joy and laughter, and the party didn’t wrap up until nearly eight o’clock.
They then moved to the living room to continue their conversation.
Hua Zhiqiang chatted with his two sons about current affairs, while Feng Wanru and Zhao Nuanyue discussed women’s beauty and skincare routines.
"Oh, Nuanyue, you have no idea. After using the face mask you specially made for me, the spots on my skin have faded considerably, and my wrinkles are less noticeable too. Now, all my friends are asking about it, but I told them you’re too busy and probably don’t have time to make more, so I turned them all down," Feng Wanru said, clearly pleased. She was very satisfied with her current appearance.
"Haha, some of the herbs in it are quite precious. I could make it for them, but it would be awkward to charge for it. If I don’t take any money, we can’t afford the ingredients," Zhao Nuanyue said, understanding her mother-in-law’s implication. Since her mother-in-law had already turned them down, she wouldn’t have to make any.
"Yes, that’s what I was thinking too." Feng Wanru nodded. "Sigh, you can’t run a private business these days. I remember when I was a child, my family owned shops. We didn’t sell cosmetics, but silk, and we made a lot of money every year!"
’I never would have guessed my mother-in-law’s family were capitalists!’
Of course, Zhao Nuanyue wasn’t foolish enough to bring up the issue of social class. She just smiled and said, "That’s right. I was just thinking, if there’s economic reform in the future and individuals are allowed to open their own shops, I’d open a store for medicinal cosmetics."
Hearing this, Feng Wanru grew anxious. "Nuanyue, I know your intentions are good and you want to earn more money to help with household expenses. But Yusen’s job is sensitive. As his wife, your every move has major implications, so please don’t do anything rashly."
"Haha, I understand," Zhao Nuanyue quickly replied, not wanting to give her mother-in-law the impression that she was greedy. "The economy doesn’t permit it right now, so of course I won’t do anything. And even if conditions allow for it in the future, I wouldn’t put the business in my name. My brother and sister, however, shouldn’t be affected by those kinds of restrictions."
"Oh, in that case, it would work." Feng Wanru wasn’t an overly idealistic person. She knew that if economic conditions allowed for private businesses and other families started making money, the Hua family would be left far behind if they only relied on their fixed salaries.
When nine o’clock arrived, Hua Yusen and Zhao Nuanyue stood up to take their leave.
In the car, Hua Yusen held Zhao Nuanyue’s hand. He had been drinking, and his face was slightly flushed. His speech was much slower than usual, and he kept breaking into silly smiles. Zhao Nuanyue realized he was a little drunk.
When they arrived home, Zhao Nuan Yang was drawing. Little Red Carp sat on a nearby chair, happily munching on a snack as she watched her brother work.
Seeing her sister and brother-in-law return, Little Red Carp hopped down from the table.
"Sister!" Little Red Carp exclaimed, hugging her leg. "I’ve been waiting for you!"
"What’s wrong?" Zhao Nuanyue asked, puzzled. Little Red Carp wasn’t usually this clingy.
Little Red Carp winked at her sister, signaling she had something to say. "I’m sleepy. Help me wash up, I want to go to bed."
Zhao Nuanyue took the hint and carried Little Red Carp to the washroom.
As she washed Little Red Carp’s face, Zhao Nuanyue asked curiously, "So, what’s going on? Hurry up and tell me, Little Red Carp. Now you’ve made me curious."
Little Red Carp lowered her voice and whispered in her sister’s ear, "When Brother came home this afternoon, he brought me back a big piece of chocolate cake!"
"What?" Zhao Nuanyue was stunned and completely confused. "Your brother works at a museum, not the Friendship Restaurant. How would he get chocolate cake?"
"Someone gave it to him, of course!" Little Red Carp said proudly. Then, she asked mysteriously, "Go on, guess who gave it to my brother."
Zhao Nuanyue thought for a moment. Other than He Qiang, Master Hu, or the people from Immortal Grass Hall, who else was there? And even if they were to give a chocolate cake, they would have sent it directly to their home. Besides, they weren’t the type to give cake.
Suddenly, Zhao Nuanyue’s eyes lit up. "Was it Pan Ling’er?"
"Mhm, mhm!" Little Red Carp nodded. "Brother said that Pan Ling’er was thanking us for the pastries, so she treated us to cake! By the way, Sister, cake is really hard to buy. The fact that Pan Ling’er could get her hands on one proves her family is something special!"
"You’re right," Zhao Nuanyue said, also frowning. "I’m just afraid Pan Ling’er’s family will look down on us. After all..."
"Hmph! How dare they?" Little Red Carp put her hands on her hips, her brows knitted in defiance. "That’s my brother! He’s much nobler than they are. If they dare look down on him, then I’ll..."
"You’ll do what?" Zhao Nuanyue asked, curious to see what idea Little Red Carp had come up with.
"Then I’ll make them have a shotgun wedding! Get her pregnant first and married later!" Little Red Carp’s words were like a clap of thunder that left Zhao Nuanyue dizzy and seeing stars.
Zhao Nuanyue gently pinched Little Red Carp’s cheek, unsure whether to laugh or cry. "It’s not even a remote possibility yet, so don’t you dare do anything reckless. Besides, you saw what happened with Guo Dongmei. To those prominent families, your little schemes are meaningless. If her family cares about their daughter, they’ll want to find a good man for her. So let’s not worry ourselves over it. We’ll just let nature take its course!"
Having come to an agreement, the two sisters decided to drop the matter.
Zhao Nuanyue, however, was thinking to herself that she would wait for Zhang Hong to find out more about Pan Ling’er before making any further plans.
Little did Zhao Nuanyue know, at the same time she was investigating Pan Ling’er, people close to Pan Ling’er were also investigating Zhao Nuan Yang and his sisters.
Everyone moved quickly. In just two or three days, Zhao Nuanyue received the information about Pan Ling’er from Zhang Hong.
Zhao Nuanyue was dumbfounded by what she read in the report.
Zhao Nuanyue had guessed that Pan Ling’er came from a good family, but she hadn’t expected them to be *this* good.
This was the Pan family, a family on par with the Wu Family. Not only was their family background almost insurmountably high, but Pan Ling’er herself was a young lady who had been doted on her entire life. She had six older brothers, each one successful in his own right, holding important positions in society with very bright futures ahead of them.
Setting aside the possibility that a pampered girl might be spoiled and willful, the six older brothers and the family’s unattainable social standing were enough to make Zhao Nuanyue have second thoughts.
Zhao Nuanyue hoped her brother would find a kind girl to fall in love with and spend the rest of his life with.
She didn’t want to use her brother to climb the social ladder, nor did she expect him to bring her any benefits. More than anything, Zhao Nuanyue was afraid her brother would be the one to get hurt.
