The Abandoned Daughter's Second Chance

Chapter 754 - 653: The Wedding Chamber

Chapter 754: Chapter 653: The Wedding Chamber

Xiao Man deftly darted away, shutting the bathroom door behind her. Her laughter, as clear and cheerful as silver bells, drifted through the crack. "Hurry up and wash! That’s not tap water in the bucket. It would be a waste for the energy to dissipate!"

Hearing that Xiao Man had once again left him spiritual spring water to bathe with, Gu Shaojun stopped his pursuit and quickly went back to wash. This was precious spiritual spring water, capable of nourishing the body and enhancing physical strength—it couldn’t be wasted. As he washed, he felt a sense of loss and grumbled inwardly. ’So much for being considerate and virtuous. Wasn’t she supposed to help her fiancé bathe? That heartless little scoundrel, that little liar, just ran off and left me all alone. It feels so empty and awful!’

Xiao Man was oblivious to her fiancé’s silent complaints, busily buzzing about the inner room like a happy little bee. Gu Shaojun didn’t live in the family residential area but in a dormitory building for singles close to the office complex. It was also known as the Elite Building, and naturally, its residents were all high-achieving, highly regarded talents from their work unit. Although it was just a one-room-deep suite, the area was quite large. It was divided into an inner and outer room and had its own bathroom and kitchen. The newly constructed building was planned quite well, and Xiao Man was very pleased with how bright and clean it was.

First, she straightened up the bedding. Xiao Yu, the communications officer, had brought back a foldable single bed for the outer room, but Xiao Man paid it no mind. She focused on the inner room, folding up the covers on the double bed and putting them away. The quilt Gu Shaojun had been using was too thin. ’Just imagine,’ she thought, ’how comfortable can you be sleeping under something that can be folded up as neatly as a block of dried tofu?’

Even without a spring mattress, stacking a few thick quilts on the bed frame would make it soft and cozy. She had plenty of quilts in her Treasure Pearl Space. Impulse buying while shopping was a common weakness among women, a habit she shared. Whenever she got tired of carrying her purchases or simply couldn’t be bothered, she’d use a little sleight of hand and toss them directly into her space. She had intentionally bought many quilts, originally intending them for her family home in Gongdao Village, but she never got the chance to make an excuse to bring them out. Now, however, they were proving useful.

She also had plenty of duvet covers, bedsheets, and pillows, all with styles and comfort modeled after those from a later era. Yang Liu’er had given her many of them. The Lu Yang Company had since acquired and merged with two textile factories, and their bedding business was booming. ’That money-hungry woman,’ Xiao Man mused. Having married Lu Jian Country, a certified wife-doting maniac, she was so thoroughly spoiled that any trace of restraint or repression in her personality had long since vanished. She was now as proud and flamboyant as a queen; there was no kind of money she didn’t dare to make.

Xiao Man laid two thick cotton pads on the bed frame. After looking through her options, she mischievously pulled out a bright red, four-piece bedding set embroidered with peonies for wealth and honor, accentuating a central "double happiness" character. Once the bed was made, she stepped back to look. ’Wow!’ The sea of brilliant red was so festive and fun. The four white walls even seemed to take on a pinkish hue in the reflection. Since she’d started, she might as well go all out. She had plenty of large, red Chinese knots, too. She took them all out, hanging one on every available hook on the walls and tying two more onto the curtains...

Xiao Man worked quickly, finishing decorating the room in no time. Gu Shaojun, however, was dawdling and still hadn’t emerged. It was probably because he was bathing with the spiritual spring water. Only someone like him, who knew how precious the spiritual spring water was, would treasure it so completely. He’d always believed that using it for a direct shower was too wasteful. If one absolutely had to bathe with it, they should pour it into a tub and soak, to ensure every last bit of Spiritual Energy was absorbed.

But he didn’t have a bathtub here, so he was washing himself meticulously with a towel instead.

He had mentioned this to Xiao Man many times, but she never debated the point with him, finding it too troublesome. ’He can just wait until he can enter the Treasure Pearl Space and see for himself,’ she thought. He’d see the endless, tiered waterfalls of the Spiritual Spring cascading down the mountain peak, and the large and small Spirit Spring Lakes at its base. The amount of spiritual spring water that overflowed daily and flowed off to who-knows-where was immeasurable. Using a few buckets for a shower was nothing in comparison.

Figuring Gu Shaojun would still be a while, Xiao Man took out an assortment of items from her space: tea leaves, fruit wine, preserved fruits, apples and pears that had been in storage for a month, candy and cookies, and various bottled pickles and sauces. She also had the two large baskets of pears and oranges Mo Jiabao had loaded into the car when they left that morning, and a box of cured meats. She divided everything into more than twenty mesh bags. Gu Shaojun had mentioned that he needed to pay social calls during the holidays. These weren’t visits to ask for favors, but mostly to see close colleagues and friends. Some of them no longer worked at his unit, while others had sacrificed their lives, leaving behind families young and old that he needed to check on when he had the time. There were also occasions when his superiors would invite him to their homes, and it was never good to show up empty-handed.

Xiao Man got everything ready for him. Each mesh bag weighed a little over ten pounds. The vibrantly colored, eye-catching fruits were mixed and portioned out, looking so plump and juicy you’d want to eat one at first glance. The twenty-odd bags, lined up neatly against the wall, created a beautiful scene of their own. ’Tonight, I decorate the room,’ she planned, ’and tomorrow, I’ll have Gu Shaojun put these in his Storage Ring.’ That way, he wouldn’t have to waste time and energy on shopping; he could just grab a bag whenever he needed to head out.

When Gu Shaojun came out of the bathroom, drying his hair with a towel as he walked into the inner room, he glanced up and froze as if hit by an immobilization spell. He then covered half his face with the towel and took a step back. But then he saw Xiao Man and froze again. His eyes darted around rapidly before he lowered the towel, his face a mask of shock and disbelief. If his little fiancée weren’t sitting right there on that crimson bed, he would have suspected he was dreaming and had taken a wrong turn through a Transmission Array, accidentally landing in someone’s wedding suite.

He wasn’t just imagining things. In this very building lived two young colleagues who had recently gotten married. Since they couldn’t go home for the New Year, their wives had come to stay. According to Xiao Yu, the two new brides seemed to be in a competition to see who could make their room more garish and festive. And now his own room... ’Speaking of which,’ he wondered, ’is this room, all decked out in red and practically dripping with opulence, really mine?’

’But my little fiancée is mine, that’s for sure,’ he thought. ’Which means I must be in the right place!’

With that thought, Gu Shaojun finally remembered to turn and look at the things arranged in the outer room. He nodded subconsciously.

Seeing Gu Shaojun’s reaction, Xiao Man collapsed onto her "wedding bed" in a fit of laughter. ’This is even better than a performance by the King of Comedy, Zhou Xingxing!’ she thought. This was exactly the effect she was going for. Scaring the daylights out of Gu Shaojun was just too much fun!
