Chapter 363: Chapter 134: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (21)

Her heart ached at the thought that life’s hardships had forced her daughter to grow up.

"Yun’er, did you receive the package and letter I mailed you last month? The one with the two tins of malted milk, two bags of powdered milk, a big bag of hawthorn strips, and a bag of raisins?"

Chi Yun’er hummed in agreement.

"As long as you got it, that’s good, that’s good," Mrs. Chi said from the other end of the line, a mix of laughter and tears in her voice. She wiped at her eyes, fighting to keep her voice steady:

"Your uncle sent over some more of that shredded squid you love, along with some dried shrimp and seaweed for soup. I also just got some sandwich cookies that keep well. I’ll mail everything to you in a bit..."

"Do you still have enough money? Your dad and I just got our summer heat subsidies..."

Listening to her mother, who sounded ready to mail her everything they owned, Chi Yun’er gripped the receiver, sobbing too hard to speak.

"Yun’er, what’s wrong? Why are you crying so hard? Did someone bully you?"

"Hurry and tell me! You’re going to worry me to death..."

Chi Yun’er forced a smile. "Mom, I’m fine. I just miss you and Dad."

She didn’t beat around the bush. "The rush harvest just ended, and Brother Hua is taking a grain convoy to Mongolia. He’ll be passing through the Capital City."

"I’ve been in the countryside for over a year without taking any leave. I just got my request approved, so it’s the perfect chance to catch a ride home."

"Mom, Dad, can you help me find a job? I’m not coming back here this time."

Mrs. Chi was stunned for a moment, but she didn’t dare hesitate and quickly agreed. "Oh, of course! As long as you’re coming home, that’s what matters. What kind of job do you want?"

Chi Yun’er chuckled, speaking as if it were her birthright. "One that’s close to home, of course! A comfortable office job where I don’t have to deal with office politics, with a light workload and great pay and benefits!"

In that moment, she felt like her younger self again—sheltered by her parents, able to take everything for granted, never having to second-guess herself.

"Okay. Just the other day, your dad was saying his unit is hiring."

"Every department needs people. How about the Human Resources Department? It handles hiring, retirement processing, employee training and assessments, attendance, work discipline... The daily workload is light, and the benefits are fantastic!"

"You’ll be the one with power over people’s hiring and promotions, the one who can make things difficult for them. No one will be able to cause trouble for you."

Chi Yun’er smiled and nodded. "Sounds great! A job like that is something most people couldn’t get no matter how hard they tried. I guess this counts as me using Dad’s backdoor connections, right?"

Mrs. Chi breathed a small sigh of relief. "Not at all. Let’s just say it’s the organization’s way of showing your father some consideration."

"Your dad’s a vice-director, after all. And more importantly, you’re highly educated, you had excellent grades, and now you’re a ’sent-down youth with progressive thinking’ returning to the city. That’s why you can have your pick of the administrative posts."

"Think about it—if you weren’t so bright, even if the organization hired you as a favor to your dad, a man who cares so much about his reputation would rather support you at home than let you embarrass him at work!"

Chi Yun’er couldn’t help but laugh. "Mom, if you want to praise your daughter for being smart, you can just say it directly. No need to be so roundabout."

"And how could my daughter be anything but smart?" Mrs. Chi laughed along, though her smile was a little bitter. ’But can anyone really be smart about everything?’

’Her daughter was wonderful in every way—beautiful, sensible, filial, intelligent, and a great student. It was only in matters of the heart that she was hopelessly stubborn, the type to keep banging her head against a brick wall without ever giving up.’

’She wondered what had happened to make Yun’er suddenly decide to come back. What could have pushed her to finally leave the Jiang Family’s second son and be willing to return to work?’

’She and Old Chi had already prepared themselves. As long as their daughter came back, they were ready to agree to any condition, even if it meant being taken for a ride and finding a job for that second son of the Jiang Family.’

’But her daughter hadn’t mentioned him at all, which paradoxically made Mrs. Chi feel even more uneasy. She didn’t want to risk upsetting Yun’er over the phone, so she decided to drop the subject. They could talk about it when she was home.’

After chatting for a few more minutes and arranging a time and place to meet, the mother and daughter reluctantly hung up.

Jiang Yihua chuckled and ruffled her hair. "Alright now, give me a smile. You’ll see your parents in a few days, and you’ll get to stay with them from now on. You should be happy."

Chi Yun’er shot him a look and sighed. "I was just thinking... I get to be reunited with my parents, but who knows when I’ll see my dear Brother Hua again."

"I’m so worried my face is going to be stuck in a frown, but Brother Hua here seems delighted. Are you really that happy to be rid of a little pest like me?"

Jiang Yihua laughed in exasperation and couldn’t resist flicking her lightly on the forehead.

"You mischievous girl. You get exactly what you want and still try to act cute. I’m a grown man; even if I felt like crying, I’d just swallow it. You think I’d let you see and make fun of me?"
