Chapter 504: Chapter 172: An ’80s Drama Queen Forced to Act as a Top Student (7)
’I’m only nine, so I can’t legally own any private property. I might as well just rent it for a year.’ "Mister, I can’t write. Could you help me?"
The young man agreed, asking for her information as he conscientiously filled out the form.
After she made a thumbprint and paid the fifty yuan, the young man secured the form and the cash. Then he pulled the main door partway shut and led Sheng Leyun toward the back courtyard.
This was a four-courtyard mansion that had once belonged to a vassal King. The depot’s owner had purchased it at a high price before renovating and converting it into the security depot.
Stepping in from the shop front revealed a large martial arts training ground. The side rooms were also indoor Martial Arts Training areas, lined with racks of spears, staffs, sabers, swords, and other weapons. In every respect, it was indistinguishable from an ancient escort agency.
They passed through a covered walkway that had been converted into a semi-open reception hall. Beyond it, all the rooms, aside from the corridor itself, were fitted with iron bars. The young attendant didn’t stop, continuing into the next courtyard. Here, the entire courtyard, right up to the rooftops, was completely sealed off with a dense mesh of iron bars and barbed wire. The courtyard itself was filled with rows of wooden chests! frⅇe
"This is it," the young man said, stopping in front of the chest labeled "49."
The chest was in the middle of a row. It was squarish and not very large. Sheng Leyun looked it over, then her gaze shifted to the key in the young man’s hand.
He chuckled and dangled it in front of her. "Tsk, you’re a sharp one, little lady. I get it. You think the key is too obvious, right?"
"We can reforge the key into a new shape based on the client’s request. I guarantee no one will ever guess it’s a key!"
Sheng Leyun nodded, smiling in satisfaction. When the young attendant turned his back, she set aside one hundred yuan for spending money and stuffed the rest into her bundle, which she then placed inside the safe deposit box.
There were many designs for the keys. Some merely disguised the key’s original shape, while others were complex interlocking contraptions, like Luban puzzles. All were small, exquisite, and beautiful—you could hang one around your neck and it would look like a piece of art.
Sheng Leyun chose a design shaped like a small knife. The entire key was encased within it, hung on a black cord to be worn around her neck.
With her business concluded, she let out a small sigh of relief. ’There was nothing like having your own private space to make you feel secure.’
She wandered the streets for a while, and when she figured it was about time, she bought some fried dough twists to eat on the ride home.
While waiting to transfer to her last bus, Sheng Leyun secretly rubbed up against a wall. She tousled her hair, deliberately making herself look pitiful, travel-worn, and utterly exhausted before walking onto the platform.
She tilted her little face up to look at the sign.
A teenage boy sitting on a bench listening to music through his headphones lazily lifted his gaze. He saw what looked like a pitiful, abandoned little creature, staring up at the sign with a look of utter confusion, like a stray puppy on the side of the road. That expression of pure, unadulterated bewilderment—the ’where am I, what am I doing’ kind—was somehow both hilarious and heartbreaking.
Before he could even process it, his body acted on its own. He took off his headphones, calmly walked over, and heard his own mouth ask, "Where are you headed?"
The boy’s voice was breaking. It was slightly raspy, yet it carried the gentle, clear warmth of a young man’s.
Sheng Leyun genuinely couldn’t read the sign. She turned her head blankly, only to be captivated by the incredible good looks of the boy in front of her.
She blinked. ’What a coincidence,’ she thought.
She gave a small laugh and told him the name of her stop. "I’ve had to transfer so many times, I can’t remember which bus I’m supposed to take."
The boy nodded. "The Number 5 bus. It’s six stops from here."
Sheng Leyun’s eyes curved into crescents as she thanked him. Then she looked curiously from the bus stop sign back to him. "Are you taking the Number 5 bus too, mister?"
