Chapter 185: Chapter 175: Da Hua’s Secret
"Have you been to the other side of the mountain?"
Da Hua suddenly asked, a bit cautiously, then stared at Tang Mo without blinking.
At the mention of the other side of the mountain, Tang Mo shook her head.
"Is there something over there?" This was exactly what Tang Mo was curious about. ’Finally, a chance to ask!’
"There’s a group of humans, humans like you."
When Da Hua mentioned the other side, her eyes filled with longing and a strange sparkle.
"But... they’re our enemies."
The starry look in her eyes instantly dimmed. Da Hua’s hands fidgeted with the hem of her skirt, trying to straighten it as if that would make her more presentable, more like a real human.
"Enemies? If you mind your own business, why would they give you trouble? Besides, they shouldn’t be any match for you, right?"
Tang Mo couldn’t figure it out. This group of apes was so powerful, and they seemed to keep to themselves and not cause trouble. Why would those humans insist on picking a fight with such a tough opponent? ’Are they out of their minds?’
"I don’t know. They want this mountain. They say there’s some kind of treasure in it. But our ancestors have lived here for generations. This mountain is our root. We can’t possibly give it to them."
There were several mountains connected here, but only the largest one, where Tang Mo was currently staying, was the true home of the apes.
"They’re very bad. Very, very bad."
In terms of strength, the apes were clearly superior. But when it came to schemes and treachery, these mutant beasts, whose intelligence had only recently awakened and who were still quite naive, were no match for those greedy humans.
"But not all humans are bad. There are good ones, too."
Da Hua seemed to remember something and quickly added this, an embarrassed expression appearing on her dark face.
Tang Mo could see it clearly: the look of a young girl in love.
Recalling Ah Li’s unfriendly attitude toward her earlier, Tang Mo began to understand.
"What kind of person is he?"
For the first time, someone was willing to listen to her innermost secret without scorn or sarcasm. Da Hua happily told Tang Mo her secret from beginning to end.
It turned out that back when the apocalypse first began, the relationship between the humans on the other side of the mountain and the Xing Clan hadn’t been so tense.
One time, while out playing, Da Hua saw a boy on the mountaintop. He had climbed up out of curiosity but had then collapsed from exhaustion after using up his superpower.
Da Hua carried the boy back to her cave without telling her mom and dad.
And so, every day she would pick fruit for the boy to eat and listen to his stories about the world below the mountain. When it was quiet at night, she would secretly take him to play in every corner of the mountain.
That was the happiest time in Da Hua’s memory.
But the happy days didn’t last long. One time, when Da Hua was away, the boy ran out of the cave to play by himself and was discovered by other members of Da Hua’s clan.
Da Hua’s father was already the chief back then. He was furious and wanted to beat the boy to death on the mountain.
It was Da Hua who tearfully begged her father not to do it. She cried and cried until she fainted.
When Da Hua woke up, her father, mother, and younger sister were all gathered around her.
The Xing Clan valued emotions above all else. Moreover, Da Mao was a complete softie for his daughters. In the end, the boy was sent back to the other side of the mountain.
After that, it was as if Da Hua became a completely different ape.
She was no longer content with her old life. Whether it was her daily habits or her appearance, she began to constantly imitate humans.
She didn’t want to be an ape anymore. She wanted to be a real human, a human just like that boy.
After listening, Tang Mo couldn’t help but sigh.
’Sure enough, love doesn’t just make humans lose their heads; it makes apes lose their heads, too.’
’They’re not even the same species. No matter how much she changes herself, how could it ever be possible?’
But Tang Mo didn’t say these words out loud.
"He said he would come back for me."
As she said this, Da Hua’s eyes shone as brightly as stars in the night sky.
It seemed that her entire life since meeting him had been spent waiting for the moment they would be reunited.
In that moment, Tang Mo suddenly understood why Ah Li hated humans so much.
It was a mother’s truest love and worry for her daughter.
Tang Mo’s days on the mountain passed happily. During the day, Xiao Hua would run over asking for milk, and Tang Mo would take her running wild all over the mountain.
At night, Da Hua would pull her aside to chat about the world outside and about a young girl’s worries.
In order not to neglect her own training, Tang Mo exercised with Xiao Hua during the day. They ran up and down the mountain, up and down the trees, and even hunted some small mutant beasts, all to train her Strength and agility to the fullest.
At night, while listening to Da Hua’s worries, Tang Mo would continuously extend her spiritual power, constantly strengthening it. She had to make the most of every single moment.
Tang Mo was worried about Qin Ling. There was no sign of Qin Ling on the Xing Clan’s side. If they had been captured, there was a high probability they were on the other side of the mountain.
Although Da Mao didn’t have anyone watching Tang Mo at all times, there were many apes guarding the mountaintop 24 hours a day to prevent people from the other side from secretly crossing over.
Tang Mo spent many days observing. The mountains were connected, completely separating this side from the other, like two different worlds.
The other two mountains were too steep. Only this main mountain had climbable space. To get to the Xing Clan’s side, one had to climb up from the foot of the mountain on the other side.
And on the main mountaintop, there were always no fewer than five strong, able-bodied apes on guard. Even at night, Tang Mo wasn’t confident she could get to the other side in a single, successful attempt.
If her attempt failed, Da Mao would surely tear her to shreds immediately.
Tang Mo had already learned from Da Hua that the people on the other side of the mountain were not the same as city-dwellers like herself. This was also the reason Da Mao had brought her back with him in the first place.
The apes all knew she was from the world outside the rainforest. If she ever showed any intention of contacting the people on the other side, she believed she would undoubtedly be killed.
Therefore, she had to be even more careful and cautious with everything.
If Qin Ling was really on the other side of the mountain, they should be safe for the time being.
Tang Mo forced herself to think rationally and not act on emotion. Doing so would not only fail to save Qin Ling but would also drag her to a point of no return.
Day after day, time on the mountain passed quickly. Xiao Hua, tired out from running wild with Tang Mo every day, would come home at night and fall straight to sleep without causing any more trouble. This saved Da Mao and Ah Li a lot of hassle.
With Tang Mo as a confidante to pour her heart out to, Da Hua no longer told her mom and dad that she wanted to go down the mountain or that she didn’t want to be an ape.
Da Mao and Ah Li credited all of this to Tang Mo’s arrival. They became much gentler toward her, gradually treating her not as a nanny, but as a friend from the outside world.
