Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 217 - 207: The Great Army Attacks

Chapter 217: Chapter 207: The Great Army Attacks

Xu the Third quickly engaged the Advanced Mutant Beast. Before long, another mutant beast’s corpse lay at the main gate of S Base.

Xu the Third returned to the ranks inside the gate.

The Mutant Beast Group, led by the red fox, merely watched all of this unfold in silence, not moving at all.

It was as if one of their own hadn’t just died.

Clearly, this first mutant beast was just cannon fodder sent by the fox to test the waters.

The fox wanted to test the power of the electric fence and the wall of fire, and to gauge the strength of the people in the base.

’What was that saying? Know your enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.’

The phrase came to Tang Mo subconsciously, but the thought startled her.

She remembered the crocodile she had seen in the jungle. It had also used a dead man’s hand as a trap, but that tactic had been far too crude.

Tang Mo had a general understanding of the emotions and intelligence of the Xing Clan. They weren’t stupid, but their natures were simple and kind, making it difficult for them to conceive of plots and schemes to use against the people down the mountain.

They were like the simple-minded, musclebound giants of human society.

But this fox before her clearly possessed the same level of intelligence, and it was far more insidious.

But what Tang Mo couldn’t figure out was why the Advanced Mutant Beast had so obediently marched to its death. It wasn’t a fool, after all. Even without high intelligence, it should have possessed the basic survival instinct of any living creature.

Before Tang Mo could solve this puzzle, the Mutant Beast Group began to move.

The mutant beasts slowly approached the wall of fire, and then something unexpected happened.

The largest beasts stood at the bottom, while the lighter ones climbed onto their backs and leaped over the top of the flames.

The flames were just over two meters high, and the larger beasts here were already taller than two meters.

Standing on their backs, the smaller mutant beasts vaulted over without so much as scorching their fur.

The larger mutant beasts had much thicker hides, so even if they charged straight through the fire, the damage would be minimal.

Once past the wall of fire, the next obstacle was the electric fence.

Seeing the Mutant Beast Group make its move, Qin Ling took action as well.

Waiting any longer would be suicide.

Qin Ling dispatched Lao San, Lao Si, and Lao Wu. Each of them led two of their brothers and ten Superpower Soldiers, forming three small squads to confront the Mutant Beast Group.

A large group would be hard to control; smaller squads allowed for more flexibility and precision.

The rest of the defenders all stood behind the partially open gate, ready to intercept any stragglers that tried to slip through.

This was the best arrangement possible given their current strength and numbers.

The fox didn’t move. It stood outside the line of fire, watching everything.

Only when the mutant beasts began crossing the fire line could Tang Mo see clearly. The wall of fire was actually quite far from the city gate; the burning flames just created an illusion that it was close.

Looking closely now, she saw there were at least ten meters between the fire line and the electric fence.

The electric fence, however, was no more than two meters from the gate.

The corpse of the horse-like mutant beast now lay less than three meters away from Tang Mo.

The squads led by Lao San, Lao Si, and Lao Wu quickly entered a chaotic battle with the mutant beasts. The soldiers were outnumbered; each had to face more than one beast.

The pressure was immense. However, these Superpower Soldiers were supported by the base, well-trained, and fully equipped—armed from head to toe.

Each one wielded a melee weapon they were proficient with, fighting desperately.

Fortunately, the wall of fire created a buffer, so the combat zone was not large. Many of the larger mutant beasts were constrained, unable to use their full strength, which gave the human Superpower Soldiers a significant advantage.

It wasn’t that S Base lacked firearms or ammunition.

But conventional firearms were useless against these Advanced Mutant Beasts. The weapons in their hands, however, were all made from abnormal treasure materials—the most precious materials they could get their hands on. Naturally, their power and damage output were far greater than that of guns.

As for heavy ordnance, that was out of the question.

By the time the Spiritual System superpower user detected and reported the approaching horde, the Mutant Beast Group was already close to S Base.

There wasn’t enough time to prepare and fire heavy weaponry.

The Mutant Beast Group was too close to S Base. Firing a powerful weapon now would result in mutual destruction.

Actually, "mutual destruction" wasn’t quite accurate.

The more likely outcome was that some of the beasts with tenacious Life Force would survive, while all the humans would be wiped out, and S Base would be reduced to a ruin, or a giant crater.

No one slacked off in this battle. Everyone knew that if they lost, they would pay with more than just their own lives.

Their families and friends lived in the base behind them. Everything they had was here. So, everyone fought with the courage of those ready to die to protect their home.

Neither Tang Mo nor Qin Ling moved. They stood with Wen Jianshu, Li Xian, and some of the other high-ranking base officials, watching the battle intently.

The big boss, the red-furred fox, hadn’t made a move yet, so of course, the humans couldn’t reveal their trump card so soon.

The two sides were evenly matched, so the battle was a stalemate. Neither side could gain an overwhelming advantage to end the fight quickly.

During this stalemate, superpower users who had received the ID message began to arrive, gathering in the open area inside the city gate.

As their numbers grew, many of the brave and bold ones didn’t even wait for Qin Ling’s command, voluntarily heading out to join the fight.

Tang Mo hadn’t expected S Base to have so many superpower users with over 500 attribute points.

The number of fighters outside quickly surpassed the number of mutant beasts, and the small area soon became saturated.

Those who couldn’t join the fray could only crowd inside the base gate, behind the electric fence. Even the four watchtowers were filled with people, all waiting for the call to battle.

A sense of human mission and community emerged at this moment. Everyone naturally made protecting their home their highest priority.

’At this rate, they could wear down those seventy-odd Advanced Mutant Beasts with sheer numbers alone.’

But the faces of the base’s decision-makers remained grim, a stark contrast to the relaxed mood of the other superpower users.

Because they all knew the climax of the battle had yet to begin.

The Super High-level Mutant Beast had not yet joined the fight.

No one knew just how powerful this currently highest-level mutant beast truly was.

The ignorant are fearless. The situation was not nearly as optimistic as it appeared.
