Chapter 379: Chapter 369: Trap
Wang Yan’s plan was actually quite simple. She had long since learned that Yiyi was a fool who always clung to the skinny girl, Qiao Jin. It seemed they were related somehow, and probably very close.
If Tang Mo knew that other people thought she and Yiyi were close, she would have been rendered speechless. She was absolutely sick of Yiyi!
’Are those people blind? Can’t they see I’m being forced?!’
Qiao Xin, for her part, turned a blind eye to Yiyi clinging to Qiao Jin. After all, she understood Qiao Jin’s temperament well enough. Even though the girl was quiet, Qiao Xin knew her nature and felt more at ease when Yiyi was by her side. Besides, she sometimes had trouble watching Yiyi on her own, so the girl’s attachment to Qiao Jin actually relieved some of her stress.
Ever since Yiyi started clinging to her, Qiao Xin began giving Qiao Jin food more often. ’Is this supposed to be some kind of payment?’ Tang Mo didn’t really understand, but she accepted whatever Qiao Xin gave her every time without the slightest embarrassment.
’It was only fair. This mother-daughter pair had eaten so much of Qiao Jin’s good food before; it was only natural they pay some of it back now. At least this would even the score for Qiao Jin.’
Although Qiao Xin wasn’t stingy with her daughter, food was limited and had to be rationed.
So, it was no surprise that Wang Yan succeeded when she made the costly move of using a piece of chocolate to lure Yiyi.
This happened on the evening of the second day after Wang Yan had whispered in Zhang Li’s ear. When night fell, the group followed their routine and found a tall building to rest in.
This time, there were simply too many mutant beasts surrounding the nearby shopping mall and office building, so everyone found a residential building instead.
Because of the hasty escape, the doors to nearly half of the apartments were left open.
Finding any food inside was out of the question, but it was a decent choice for a one-night stay.
Since it was a residential building, the group split up into different apartments. Usually, ten or so people would squeeze into one unit; one apartment was even packed with over twenty people.
It wasn’t that there weren’t enough apartments; it was just that people felt safer in large groups.
Furthermore, at everyone’s strong insistence, the three Zhao Family brothers stayed in three separate apartments. Only then could everyone feel more at ease.
Tang Mo was originally with Aunt Hua, Da Bao, and Xiao Bao. The apartment they were in had four bedrooms and a large living room, housing over twenty people in total.
Zhao Huan was currently sleeping on the floor in the living room with a group of men, while the women and children shared the bedrooms.
They had been living outdoors this whole time, and Tang Mo hadn’t showered in a long while. Now that they were finally in a residential building with the right conditions, the first thing she did was take a nice, hot shower.
After getting clean, she found a corner in the bedroom with a rug and some cushions, preparing to have a comfortable sleep.
Qiao Xin had taken Yiyi to stay in another apartment. Finally free from Yiyi’s pestering, Tang Mo felt that life was wonderful.
But before she could drift off into blissful dreams, an uninvited guest arrived.
"Qiao Jin, something’s wrong! Your sister ran off!"
Wang Yan ran into the room where Tang Mo was, shouting in a panic.
"My sister? Who?"
For a moment, Tang Mo couldn’t place who this "sister" was. She didn’t feel close to Qiao Xin and Yiyi at all and had never really considered Yiyi her sister.
’Could I have been wrong? Are they not sisters?’ Tang Mo’s reaction made Wang Yan briefly doubt her own judgment. But things had already progressed this far; she had to see it through, no matter what.
"It’s Yiyi!"
Since Tang Mo wasn’t getting it, Wang Yan had to spell it out.
"Oh. What about her?" Tang Mo’s reaction was very calm; she even felt a little sleepy.
"A moment ago, she said she was coming to find you and ran away from her mother. I saw her run out of the building, so I came looking for you!"
"Why look for me? Just go find her mom."
Tang Mo straightened the wool blanket beneath her. ’This wool is so soft. How long has it been since I’ve slept on something so plush? What a cruel world.’
"I’ve already told her mother, and she’s looking for her now. Don’t you want to help look for her?"
Wang Yan hadn’t expected Tang Mo’s cold reaction, but she pressed on anyway.
Tang Mo looked up and stared at Wang Yan, her gaze sharp.
’Yiyi isn’t usually this friendly with anyone. Isn’t this woman being a little too enthusiastic?’
’If I remember correctly, this woman is one of Zhang Li’s people, right?’
At the thought of Zhang Li, Tang Mo’s eyes turned cold. If Zhang Li was really behind this, then Yiyi was truly in danger.
The women in Zhang Li’s group all looked utterly broken. One didn’t even have to think to imagine what kind of life they lived.
Thinking of Yiyi’s still-innocent face, Tang Mo felt a twinge of pity.
’I guess when someone is always hanging around you, you end up developing some sort of feeling for them, no matter how annoying they are.’
’Oh, well. I’ll play along with this clumsy trap of theirs.’
Tang Mo stroked the soft rug one last time. ’I’m so pathetic. Looks like I won’t get to sleep on this rug after all.’
Tang Mo got up reluctantly. "Let’s go take a look."
"Aren’t you going to take your bag? It’s too dangerous to just leave it here."
Wang Yan’s gaze was fixed on Tang Mo’s backpack. Over the past two days, she had seen the girl pull a lot of food out of it with her own eyes.
The backpack was stuffed full. ’There must be a lot of good stuff inside.’
Wang Yan hadn’t set this trap for Zhang Li, nor was it entirely out of jealousy.
She knew that both Qiao Jin and that fool’s mother had plenty of good things.
’If I can get my hands on their things and then use Zhang Li to get rid of these people, it’d be like killing several birds with one stone.’
Wang Yan had her own little scheme all worked out, but clearly, Tang Mo wasn’t going to let her have her way so easily.
"You mean the backpack?"
Tang Mo picked up the backpack from the floor and casually tossed it to Da Bao, who was lying on the bed.
"Da Bao, watch my bag for me. Don’t let *certain people* get any ideas about it."
"Yes!"
Da Bao took the bag, clutched it tightly in his arms, and glared at Wang Yan.
His childish instincts made him dislike this woman, and his expression was very serious.
"Let’s go."
Before Wang Yan could say anything else, Tang Mo was the first to walk out of the room.
Wang Yan was furious. ’Is that Qiao Jin an idiot? Entrusting such an important backpack to a child?’
’How am I supposed to get anything out of this now? I guess only a fool would play with another fool.’
Her anger made the hunger pangs in her stomach even worse.
’But it’s fine. That fool’s mother is a fat sheep. If I can skin her, then this won’t be a total loss.’
Thinking about Yiyi’s mom, Wang Yan’s heart settled a bit. She followed Tang Mo’s steps out of the room.
