Chapter 438: Chapter 428: A Pleasant Surprise
"Sir, about those two kids... does your family plan on raising them for good, or is it just for a few days?"
Unexpectedly, Tao Jiayun spoke up and asked Xu Jinsan.
Xu Jinsan’s profile picture in the group chat was a photo of himself, so it wasn’t hard for Tao Jiayun to recognize him.
"My family only has one child. From now on, I’ll raise those two as my own. No matter what the future holds, as long as I have a bite to eat, I won’t let them go hungry!"
Xu Jinsan had an honest face, and coming from him, the words were truly convincing.
"Alright. Since you’ve put it that way, Sir, the rest of this food is yours. Consider it rations for the two children—our small contribution to helping those two poor kids."
The food was distributed by head count, with people pointing to the group chat profile pictures of their family members.
For children and elderly people without phones, someone at home had to take a picture and send it over as proof.
It would be unrealistic to say no one tried to pull a fast one, but most people were honest.
Of course, Xu Jinsan didn’t show pictures of the two children. For one, they weren’t his by birth. For another, the kids had only been at his home for a few days, and he couldn’t bring himself to claim two people’s worth of rations for them so soon.
Xu Jinsan only took Mrs. Xu’s and Xu Yin’s shares.
But even though he didn’t say anything, Tao Jiayun understood perfectly.
"That’s too generous. The kids don’t eat a lot, so they don’t use up much food. We shouldn’t take their share."
At a time like this, turning down food that was right in front of him... you’d be hard-pressed to find another person as foolish as Xu Jinsan.
At first, many people felt uneasy about giving the food to Xu Jinsan, wondering if he would actually feed the two children.
But hearing what Xu Jinsan said, they were reassured, and one by one, they began to persuade him.
"Take it. It’s not for you; it’s for the two kids."
"Exactly! If you don’t take it, the kids still need to eat!"
"This mist is terrifying. If in a few days you tell us the kids have nothing to eat, it’s not like we can all come deliver food to you then."
The group chimed in, one after another. But instead of fighting over the food, they were all trying to give it away. The scene moved even Tang Mo.
In the end, persuaded by the crowd, Xu Jinsan bashfully accepted the supplies. He repeatedly promised he would take good care of the two children and that he would be accountable to everyone.
While the food distribution on this side was a scene of cheerful harmony, the few men tied up on the other side were having a complete mental breakdown.
They watched, eyes wide, as the food that had originally belonged to them was divided among so many people, their hearts aching as if they were bleeding.
Zhang Laohu used all his strength to spit out the rag in his mouth.
"Hey! You’ve divided up all the food! What are we supposed to eat?!"
The tied-up Zhang Laohu roared. Being bound, beaten, and cursed at weren’t the real issue. But having no food at all... wasn’t that a death sentence?!
It wasn’t until they heard this piercing voice that everyone remembered. ’Oh, right. There are still a few people lying here.’
But these people were villains, enemies. What should be done with them?
Everyone turned their gaze to Tao Jiayun.
This time, however, even Tao Jiayun was at a loss.
They had the supplies, but what were they supposed to do with these men?
Things had already come to this. If they let them go, what if they retaliated later?
They only had courage because they were in a large group. Everyone had seen what these men were capable of. In a one-on-one fight, they’d be dead in a few moves.
Giving them food was out of the question. If feeding the two children was like nurturing the future generation, then feeding these men would be like nourishing a societal cancer.
But to kill them...
Tao Jiayun wasn’t very old. Though braver than most, he had lived his whole life in a peaceful society. It was absolutely impossible for him to resolve to kill several people.
"Just leave them tied up here. Whether they live or die is up to fate."
Tao Jiayun picked up the rag and stuffed it back into their mouths.
With no food and no one to rescue them, being left tied up here was an eventual death sentence.
Everyone knew this would be the outcome, yet no one voiced any objection.
Perhaps, in their hearts, they were all waiting for someone else to say it out loud.
Uncharacteristically, even Xu Jinsan said nothing. Instead, he lowered his head and silently organized the food he had received.
And so, everyone took their share of the food, said their goodbyes, and plunged back into the mist, rushing home.
Before leaving, Tang Mo looked at the men tied up on the ground and left a bit of her spiritual power on each of them.
The hatred in the eyes of Zhang Laohu and his men was completely undisguised as they glared fiercely at everyone leaving.
Tang Mo shook her head. ’Leaving such a liability here will definitely cause problems later.’
’How could a few ropes hold a Superpower Attribute User forever? These people are too soft-hearted.’
But with Xu Jinsan right beside her, it wasn’t convenient for Tang Mo to do anything.
’In a mission world like this, she preferred not to interfere with its natural course unless it was absolutely necessary for her task. After all, the butterfly effect she might incite would cause her a lot of trouble. She only needed to ensure the safety of Xu Jinsan and his wife.’
Despite these thoughts, just before they left, Tang Mo used her spiritual power to cripple one arm of each of the men.
The sudden, intense pain made them scream in agony, but with their mouths gagged, the people outside couldn’t hear what they were shouting.
"What’s wrong with them?"
Xu Jinsan noticed that something was suddenly wrong with the men and hesitated, about to step forward.
"Dad, it’s nothing. They’re probably just cursing at us. Let’s hurry home. Mom, Pingping, and An’an are waiting for us to eat."
Tang Mo pulled Xu Jinsan back.
Hearing his daughter say this, Xu Jinsan’s curiosity vanished. He was carrying a hefty share of food, and he couldn’t wait to see how happy his wife would be. It was best to hurry back.
And so, Xu Jinsan and Tang Mo once again plunged back into the mist.
This time, Tang Mo didn’t give Xu Jinsan a Spirit Protection Shield, letting him fully experience the power of the mist.
She couldn’t let him go on thinking the world was a gentle place. Otherwise, if he started wandering out for no reason, it would be a real headache for Tang Mo.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Xu, who hadn’t seen them return, was anxiously looking at her phone. The other women in the group chat who hadn’t gone out were also asking each other how their families were doing.
The distribution had taken a while. They had been so happy dividing everything up that they had lost track of time, worrying everyone back home.
