Chapter 1686: Cloud Boss and Little Cousin Extra (4)
Fan Zhengyu lost Zheng Lansheng, but picked up Yun Hezhi instead. Lying in bed, she carefully sent him a message, asking about the time for their first rehearsal.
Yun Hezhi was flipping through materials about the violin at the time. He was familiar with instruments commonly used in Beijing Opera like the Jinghu and the moon lute, but didn’t really know much about the violin. Since they were going to collaborate, he had to do some homework. His phone buzzed and a message popped up.
[Boss Yun, about rehearsal time, I’m free anytime, I’ll go with whatever works for you.]
The wording was quite polite.
Fan Zhengyu quickly got a reply: [I’m free all day tomorrow.]
[Then how about I come over around eight in the morning?]
[Okay.]
...
After pinning down the rehearsal time, Fan Zhengyu went online and dug up a ton of information about Yun Hezhi, so excited she didn’t sleep a wink all night.
She really had picked up a treasure!
What the hell was Zheng Lansheng...
Standing next to him, he could only be the little brother!
After hyping herself up alone all night, she showed up at Yun Hezhi’s front door the next day with a pair of panda eyes.
**
Yun Hezhi was standing under a cassia tree warming up his voice. His face was clean-cut and open, and for someone who played dan roles, this face could even be described as "rosy lips and white teeth," carrying that natural poise and defiance that comes with being a star performer.
It was early autumn, dusk was settling over the suburbs in a dim haze. He was dressed in plain white, his whole person seeming shrouded in a thin layer of mist, strikingly handsome, his posture and gait especially elegant and refined as he walked.
When Fan Zhengyu reached the door, it was left slightly ajar, and she just stood there, staring, a bit dazed.
Only when the door opened and Yun Hezhi appeared in front of her did she snap back. What she’d been doing basically counted as peeking. A shy flush crept up onto her small face.
She tilted her head up, smiling as she greeted him: "Morning, Boss Yun."
"Come on in." Yun Hezhi’s voice carried a touch of operatic lilt; the way he played with his tone was pleasant to the ear, like a breeze suddenly blowing through and scattering the mist, making all your senses sharpen at once. "Have you had breakfast?"
"Yeah."
"Then sit for a bit. I’ll go have a cup of tea and we’ll start right away."
Fan Zhengyu nodded. After sitting down, she took out her violin and checked the strings and bow. Yun Hezhi came back out, set his tea on the stone table, and asked, "Do you have any ideas about which opera we should collaborate on?"
"I only know a bit about Beijing Opera. As for what we should perform, I think that should be up to you. You’re way more professional than I am." Fan Zhengyu’s little bit of study in Beijing Opera wasn’t anything she dared show off in front of Yun Hezhi.
"Hold on a second."
Yun Hezhi went inside and brought out a slightly yellowed script, handing it to her. "Take a look through this and see if there’s anything you like or find interesting."
Fan Zhengyu nodded in reply, accepted the book, and started flipping through it. It didn’t just have lyrics, it also noted when to use which instruments to convey emotions and build atmosphere—perfect for someone like her who did instrumental music.
She was reading intently. Maybe once people step into a field they’re familiar with, they slip into it easily. Fan Zhengyu didn’t notice at all that Yun Hezhi had already come to stand beside her, sipping his tea...
Watching her!
Yun Hezhi had met her a few times and always felt she was like a child. With a cousin like Jiang Jinsang looking out for her, it was obvious she’d grown up in a very good environment.
They were different. He’d trained in Kunqu. Most people who sing opera start as children, and in singing, reciting, acting, and fighting, he’d taken more than his share of scoldings from his master. He spent all day steeped in opera, shut off from the world, to the point that for a period of time he even had trouble communicating with people.
Yun Hezhi wasn’t someone who cared much about appearances, but in that moment he felt that this girl in front of him seemed to shine.
His gaze dropped—
And then simply wouldn’t move away.
He just thought: this girl... is pretty interesting.
"Boss Yun, what do you think of The Drunken Concubine?" Fan Zhengyu pointed at the script. "It’s just that everyone’s already so familiar with this piece, the bar is definitely high. If the performance isn’t good enough, it’s really easy to crash and burn. How about you pick a few for me first, and I’ll choose from those?"
"Okay."
Yun Hezhi said this and set down his cup.
Leaning over, bending at the waist, Fan Zhengyu pushed the script toward him, and he started flipping through it. Her mind had been fully focused, and she hadn’t noticed the distance between them; only now did she realize they were a bit close.
This Boss Yun...
His skin is way too nice.
So fair it’s almost translucent. How can a man’s features be this good-looking? Thinking of the stash of face masks she had at home, her heart prickled with envy. She really wanted to ask him how he took care of his skin.
Originally Fan Zhengyu had only thought it in her head, but her mouth had no filter, and after an all-nighter her brain was still foggy, so she actually blurted it out.
"Boss Yun, your..."
"Hmm?"
Yun Hezhi turned his head slightly, the distance between them only a matter of inches. He’d just had some tea, and his breath carried a faint fragrance.
