Apocalypse Rebirth: Crazy from Day One

Chapter 472 - 483: Sanctyr Base’s Purpose

Chapter 472: Chapter 483: Sanctyr Base’s Purpose

Sanctyr Base would stop at nothing to achieve its goals.

They had no regard for human life whatsoever.

Using such an incentive to tempt people... it was easy to imagine what the starving would do for a handful of grain.

’No wonder,’ Stella thought, ’when I arrived in Veridia, I found the people here more volatile than those on the outside, ready to fight at the slightest provocation.’

The people outside, hardened by the apocalypse, had certainly grown more cruel and short-tempered.

But most still retained a sliver of reason. They would weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether to strike. But...

She’d been in Veridia for some time now and had noticed the people here were far more reckless. A fight could break out over a few spoken words.

It was because the leaders of this territory were indirectly encouraging them to kill. How could the survivors here not become violent?

After all, if you killed someone, you could trade their corpse for supplies.

Some, crazed with hunger, would murder the innocent for a bite to eat. The more ruthless might even turn on their own.

And the only reason Sanctyr Base did all this was to acquire a large number of corpses to facilitate their research.

It wasn’t just the dead. Rumor had it that many living people they captured were also sent to Sanctyr Base’s laboratories.

Even their own members who made mistakes were sent to the labs.

All in all, Sanctyr Base was a terrifying entity.

Zane Xavier remained silent. He knew better than any outsider what his former base had done, yet he was powerless.

He had never approved of the base’s methods, but Boss Saint was a staunch supporter of Dr. Quinn.

And within Sanctyr Base, his own words carried no weight; no one listened to him.

He couldn’t change anything, so he could only turn a blind eye.

In this apocalyptic world, all he wanted was to find a safe place to live out the rest of his days.

That was why, even though he disapproved, he had never left Sanctyr Base.

At this moment, however, he felt a pang of shame—shame for ever having been a part of Sanctyr Base.

For a moment, he didn’t dare to meet Stella Sterling’s gaze.

Stella Sterling, however, didn’t blame him. Instead, she asked, "Do the people who live here know what Sanctyr Base is doing?"

Zane Xavier nodded, then shook his head. He spoke with a sense of helplessness. "Some know, some don’t. A few are genuinely in the dark, but others are aware and simply choose to adapt to this way of life."

"Life within the base’s territory is dangerous, but many people are helpless. They have no other choice. If they left, most wouldn’t even know how to survive. It would just be a death sentence."

"So, even though many people are aware of Sanctyr Base’s methods and see their intentions, no one speaks out."

"Most people just trust in their own strength. They believe that as long as they’re strong enough, they won’t be the one who gets killed. They won’t end up as research material for Sanctyr Base."

It was a dangerous place, but it also offered a chance to survive.

Stella Sterling nodded. She closed her eyes and said no more.

Zane Xavier also fell silent. He drove off, and they soon found a deserted area. Most of the buildings here had collapsed, and it was less crowded than other places. They decided to stay here for the time being.

Veridia had designated living quarters, provided by Sanctyr Base. To move in, one only had to pay with food.

Some of the better-off survivors would choose to stay in the housing provided by Sanctyr Base.

Most people, however, couldn’t bear to spend their food on lodging. They simply found a random place to rest in the ruins of the city.

It wasn’t that Stella Sterling was short on food; she just didn’t see the necessity.

The two of them could rest in the car just fine.

Besides, Stella Sterling had no intention of attracting too much attention.

She just wanted to find a quiet place to lie low, rendezvous with her dozen or so followers, and wait for Black Swan to arrive.

Hearing the rumble of the vehicle, a few people who had been resting nearby looked over.

Their eyes lit up when they saw the car.
