Wolf-Raised Cub with a Space: Surviving the Disaster Years

Chapter 388: I’ve Come Back to Save You All

Chapter 388: Chapter 388: I’ve Come Back to Save You All

Grandma Qin’s expression changed, and she rushed out to see what was happening.

She thought the Black Wolf King had suddenly flown into a rage and hurt someone.

But when she ran out, she was shocked to see it was the old village chief’s son, Deng Xiangji, who had lost his mind from his illness.

He had suddenly started convulsing. Uncle Liu, afraid Deng Xiangji would bite his own tongue, couldn’t find anything suitable nearby for him to bite down on.

So, Uncle Liu had no choice but to sacrifice the web of his own hand.

Sister-in-law Liu happened to see it.

She rushed over in a single step, shoved Uncle Liu away, and thrust her own hand forward.

In that split second, Deng Xiangji bit down on Sister-in-law Liu’s hand.

She let out a pained scream, her face ashen.

Hearing the cry, everyone came rushing over.

Dong Sanhua was sweeping the floor. She ran over, and upon seeing the scene, was so frightened she dropped the broom in her hand.

"Liu Family’s Sister-in-law!" she cried, rushing over and desperately trying to pull Deng Xiangji off. "Brother Deng, let go! This is the Liu Family’s Sister-in-law!"

The old village chief and Chen Ye both came forward to help. Uncle Liu was even about to dislocate Deng Xiangji’s jaw.

Suddenly!

THWACK!

Someone struck Deng Xiangji on the back of the neck, and he collapsed limply back onto the bed.

Everyone gasped. The old village chief’s face paled.

Grandma Qin stood there, holding a rolling pin and panting slightly. Only after confirming Deng Xiangji was unconscious did she look up.

"Don’t worry, I know my own strength. I didn’t hurt him badly." Grandma Qin’s father was a butcher, and she had known how to slaughter pigs since she was a child.

She knew just where to strike a pig’s head to knock it out instantly.

Although people were a little different from pigs, the method had still worked.

The old village chief was the first to recover, his eyes red as he looked at his son with immense heartache.

"Head of the Liu Family, hurry and take your wife to get that wound treated," the old village chief urged, waving his hand.

Uncle Liu put an arm around Sister-in-law Liu’s shoulders and hurried outside.

Dong Sanhua brought over the last bucket of Spiritual Spring Water.

"Use the mountain spring water Grandma Qin brought to wash the wound!"

Inside the house, no one had gotten a clear look. But now, out in the sunlight, Uncle Liu and the others saw it plainly: two teeth marks oozing dark blood on the web of Sister-in-law Liu’s hand.

Everyone’s heart sank.

The plague was highly contagious. Now that Sister-in-law Liu had been bitten, the consequences were self-evident.

Dong Sanhua snapped out of it and was about to pour the water to wash the wound.

But to everyone’s surprise, Sister-in-law Liu, who had always been known for her selfishness, stopped her.

"Forget it! Sister Sanhua, you all keep the mountain spring water. Don’t worry about me."

Uncle Liu’s eyes reddened. "How can we do that! Sister Sanhua, pour the water. I’ll wash it for her."

Sister-in-law Liu shook her head. "It’s no use! We all know what this sickness is. Let’s not waste our efforts."

But Grandma Qin said, "There’s plenty of spring water on the mountain. What’s more important than your life? Don’t be foolish! If something happens to you, what will your Hu Zi do?"

Sister-in-law Liu let out a hearty laugh. Her face was pale, her lips colorless, and the wound on her hand was turning a bluish-black.

Even so, she managed to laugh, wanting only to comfort her husband and the others.

"What’s there to be afraid of? With such good neighbors, Hu Zi won’t starve. You’ll all look after him. I know that. I can rest easy."

Dong Sanhua sobbed, wiping away her tears. "Sister-in-law, don’t say things like that! No matter what, let’s wash it clean first. Once Ningning comes back, how could there be no hope? Don’t say such disheartening things!"

Sister-in-law Liu lowered her eyes, a look of resignation on her face. "Ningning isn’t an immortal. If she could really save us, why do you think she’s been in the city for so long without coming back?"

"Nonsense! Sanhua, ignore her! Pour the water and wash it!" Grandma Qin stamped her foot, her voice full of authority.

Dong Sanhua quickly poured all the Spiritual Spring Water over the wound, and Uncle Liu forcefully squeezed out the dark, clotted blood.

Chen Ye brought some herbs from the room and applied them to the wound. However, in just half an hour, Sister-in-law Liu began to develop a fever.

She gradually became delirious and couldn’t even walk. She had to be carried to the room where Granny Chen had stayed.

Uncle Liu, a towering man, sat by her bedside, silent and with reddened eyes.

Suddenly, he slapped himself across the face.

"If I had known, I wouldn’t have come. If I hadn’t come, you wouldn’t have either," he said in anguish.

Sister-in-law Liu started to laugh, a faint froth of blood at the corners of her lips. She swallowed several times.

"What kind of talk is that? I’ve never done anything wrong in my life! My younger brother got sick and infected our village. How could I not get involved?"

"At first, I didn’t want you to come because I couldn’t bear to lose you. You’re my husband, and we have our adorable Hu Zi. I didn’t want you to put yourself in danger."

"But you were right. We implicated the other villagers, so how could we not help? This is fine too. In my life, I, Feng Qing, have been relentless when I’m in the right, but I’ve never wronged anyone."

"Even when I meet King Yama, I can say I never harmed a single soul in my life. I’ve lived with a clear conscience... Hey, what are you crying for?" she teased Uncle Liu.

Sister-in-law Liu chuckled. "Hu Zi’s father, I’ve only seen you cry twice in this lifetime. The first time was when we got married. You said you were dirt poor and felt sorry for me for marrying you. I told you that as long as we worked hard together, we’d have everything we needed one day."

"Do you remember? My nickname when I was young was ’Little Firecracker’. Don’t you worry. Even in death, I’ll go out with a bang and watch over you and Hu Zi from the heavens..." she rambled on.

Her gaze had already grown hazy, and it looked like she wasn’t going to make it.

As Sister-in-law Liu spoke, she started coughing up blood, her whole body burning with a high fever.

Grandma Qin had just ridden the Black Wolf King back up the mountain and returned with a large amount of Spiritual Spring Water.

"Quick, feed her a little more! See if it helps!"

Uncle Liu staggered on his feet, nearly falling several times. Seeing him looking so devastated, Grandma Qin quickly had Chen Ye help him.

Dong Sanhua paced anxiously in the courtyard. Suddenly, she had an idea.

"A few days ago, Sister-in-law Liu’s two younger brothers were also sick. They ate and drank at my house, but I never caught the plague."

"Later, they even got better! I don’t know what they ate to recover, but I’ll go home and make a few dishes to try. What if it helps? Even just making Sister-in-law Liu suffer less would be good."

Before Grandma Qin could say anything, Dong Sanhua hurried away.

The Black Wolf King sat at the entrance, its lupine eyes watching the joys and sorrows of the humans with calm indifference.

’The food and water Dong Sanhua used all came from his Jiaojiao, little Ningning,’ it thought.

’Even if it worked, it was Shen Ningning’s food that cured them.’

’Sister-in-law Liu’s two brothers probably just had a mild infection.’

By the time Dong Sanhua finished cooking and brought the food over, about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, Sister-in-law Liu was already on the brink of death.

She had just passed out and had only been forced back to consciousness when Uncle Liu pinched the philtrum below her nose.

"Wife, you can’t sleep! Hold on a little longer! Chen Ye just went back into the city to bring Ningning back! I’m begging you, for my sake and for Hu Zi, please just hold on a little longer!" Uncle Liu’s dark, weathered face was streaked with hot tears.

Sister-in-law Liu’s eyes were vacant. She stared at the roof beams and murmured, "You have to live well... You’re an honest man, and Hu Zi takes after you. Without me, what will you two do...?"

Uncle Liu wept bitterly, filled with regret for not having treated his wife better in the past.

He was reserved and upright by nature and had always thought Sister-in-law Liu’s strong-willed personality was a flaw.

In the past, whenever villagers asked for his help, he was always willing to do it for free, but his wife always wanted to ask for silver in return.

Every time Uncle Liu opposed her money-grubbing behavior, Sister-in-law Liu would righteously argue, "This is what we deserve! How can I let you work for free? Don’t you agree?"

He lived his life with integrity and generosity, so in his eyes, she had become a woman who haggled over every bit of silver.

But only now did Uncle Liu realize that their lives had gotten better and better, their one dilapidated thatched hut turning into a large three-room house.

It was all because of his wife, who, ignoring the judgment of others, had fought for every little bit of it for him!

He remembered how, years ago, when Sister-in-law Liu had just married him, she too had been a vibrant and radiant young girl.

She hadn’t wanted to pinch pennies and become a vulgar, unlikable woman.

But after becoming a wife and a mother, she had to fight to make a living.

Otherwise, how could she have taken care of her husband and her child?

Once a woman takes on other roles, she will abandon her old self without any regrets.

Uncle Liu sobbed, "Just wait a little longer! Just a little longer!"

But Sister-in-law Liu’s eyelids felt incredibly heavy.

Chen Ye had just left. Even if he could find Shen Ningning, she probably wouldn’t be able to hold on that long.

Just as the room was filled with silent sobs, the sound of a wolf’s howl suddenly came from the courtyard.

Grandma Qin quickly wiped her tears and ran to the door to look.

A look of ecstatic joy broke through her tear-streaked face. "She’s back! My granddaughter is back!"

Shen Ningning’s carriage sped toward them, kicking up clouds of dust. It was like a sharp blade cutting through the gloom, bringing with it a rainbow of white light that swept away the darkness hanging over everyone’s hearts.

The little one hopped down from the carriage, carrying a bag of medicinal, grape-like fruits.

"Grandma, don’t be afraid! I’m here to save you all!"
