Chapter 337: Chapter 90: Extraordinary Corps
"Go get Falan. Tell him to bring everything I had him prepare. We’re going to take a look." Robson didn’t want to elaborate on the topic.
The highest art of lying was to provide a direction and let others guess the rest. Most people would help Robson justify his own story in their minds.
Besides, people always have more faith in what they figure out for themselves.
Ais nodded, only half-understanding. After all, he’d never received any special training in such matters.
The two of them didn’t waste any more time. The task of fetching Falan was simply delegated to a soldier.
Since Robson hadn’t finished setting up camp yet, Ais hadn’t placed the soldiers in a concealed location this time.
Besides, with hundreds of men throughout the army suddenly falling unconscious first thing in the morning, there was nowhere to hide them anyway. Trying to do so would only make things more conspicuous.
Robson quickly made his way to where Ais had gathered the Tier Seven Soldiers.
"Lord, this is where the soldiers are staying. This group is unusual. I’ve observed them closely. They’re almost all warriors with six levels of military honors, and one even reached seven." Seeing Robson’s arrival, the Non-commissioned Officer on guard stepped forward to report.
"The Lord of Dawn has acknowledged their loyalty and strength, and so has bestowed this divine grace upon them.
Don’t worry. If you work hard, you might receive it too." Robson stuck to his previous explanation.
Hearing it involved a god, the Non-commissioned Officer scratched the back of his head in confusion.
Robson knew this Non-commissioned Officer was still skeptical.
This Non-commissioned Officer was also a Tier Six Soldier. After being upgraded by the Mount & Blade-style panel, these soldiers weren’t so easy to fool.
Although the Frank Kingdom also believed in the Lord of Dawn, pragmatic realities meant that people here were more practical than those in the south.
In fact, it wasn’t just the Non-commissioned Officer. Within Robson’s range of perception, many other soldiers were also looking this way.
After all, seeing so many people fall unconscious at once would unnerve anyone. ’What if it’s a plague...?’
Robson had no intention of explaining. What was about to happen would seem like the work of a god—not just to these ordinary men, but even to Falan.
Without any auxiliary reagents, a single meal of Magical Beast Meat could turn an ordinary soldier into an Extraordinary.
In fact, this was part of the explanation Robson had given Falan. One had to tailor the story to the audience.
Falan had his theory of civilizational collapse, and Lord Robson had his own doctrine of divine providence.
Relying on the enigmatic Eastern philosophy from his past life, Robson had Falan completely baffled.
As long as social structures existed, enigmatic Eastern philosophy could always be used to intimidate people while remaining internally consistent.
And as if that enigmatic philosophy were truly at work, just as Robson was thinking of him, Mage Falan arrived on the scene, escorted by two soldiers.
One of the soldiers was carrying several notebooks.
Those were mostly notebooks Robson had swiped from the Fengman Clan; he had made off with quite a few at the time.
’When I start developing my own territory, every coin will count. I definitely can’t afford to buy a luxury item like paper.’
Falan looked extremely excited, striding up to Robson in just a few quick steps.
"So? You haven’t started yet, have you?"
As a proper Mage, Falan had an insatiable curiosity for the unknown.
Robson felt a twinge of apprehension at the sight of Falan’s blazing eyes.
"Not yet... Is this what you wrote?"
Robson gestured to the nearby soldier, who immediately came forward and handed the books to him.
The script on the cover was perfectly neat—undoubtedly the work of Magic.
Emblazoned on the front of each book were three large words: *Affleck’s Adjutant Guide*.
That’s right. This was Robson’s next step for his army.
Now that Robson’s soldiers were well-fed, it was time to provide them with some ideological guidance.
According to Robson’s previous experiments, the reaction speed of Extraordinary Soldiers already far surpassed that of ordinary people.
Falan had previously given Robson a method for rapidly teaching literacy, even to Peasants. With its help, the two Extraordinary Soldiers Robson had created before could now read books fluently.
To have mastered a language in just over a month... that speed was frankly terrifying.
This level of proficiency was more than enough. The *Affleck’s Adjutant Guide* was written by Robson himself in simple, plain language, free of the convoluted phrasing favored by the nobility. Robson had previously launched a literacy campaign in the army, so many of the Tier Six Soldiers could already read it. Even if the Tier Seven Extraordinary had any trouble, a day or two of study would be sufficient.
The book covered the common sense of warfare and other foundational knowledge.
It was taught primarily through a format of questions and answers combined with short stories. While imparting knowledge, it also served to build up the glorious image of Lord Robson.
For example, a story might tell of how the army, facing some great hardship in some-and-such place, was saved when Lord Robson stepped forward with a clever plan. In the end, under his leadership, the army always marched to victory.
The stories were mostly adapted from the army’s actual history.
"Good. Let’s go." After a quick look to confirm there were no issues, Robson handed the book back to the soldier, who hastily accepted it.
....
Just like the two soldiers from before, these unconscious men were also bathed in a silvery-white radiance that covered the entire patch of ground.
This was why the other soldiers in the camp were so curious and wanted to get a closer look.
A silvery-white mist had appeared out of nowhere, blanketing the ground. It was impossible to ignore.
Falan watched Robson closely. He saw Robson walk up to an unconscious soldier and place his hand on him.
Before Falan could even process what was happening, Robson had already lowered his hand.
"Huh? That’s it?" Falan asked, looking at Robson in confusion.
"That’s it." Robson shook his head. He had recently maxed out his guidance technique; channeling for one soldier barely took any time at all.
It wasn’t just Falan; even Ais was baffled. ’It wasn’t this fast last time,’ he thought.
"A god’s blessing is just that simple.
The ritual is secondary. What matters most is the individual. If one isn’t worthy, the most elaborate ritual is useless."
As Robson spoke, the unconscious soldier began to stir.
"Com... Commander? Lord!"
Seeing the two men before him, the soldier immediately scrambled to his feet and offered a military salute, but Robson cut him off with a smile.
"Take a moment. Do you feel anything different?" Robson asked with a smile.
The soldier looked confused at Robson’s words.
Robson said nothing. Instead, he casually drew the sword from a nearby guard, grabbed the newly-awakened soldier’s hand, and—to the soldier’s astonishment—slammed it against the blade.
It all happened so fast that before anyone could react, the soldier’s hand had already put a chip in the sword’s blade.
Every person present stared wide-eyed, watching the scene in utter shock.
"A miracle... Could this truly be a miracle?!"
