Chapter 367: Chapter 117: Rendezvous
The great Viscount Robertson, riding his Flying Dragon, led his valiant army to Bai Ma Ferry. The moment they arrived, they sent the Beastman Army scattering in every direction.
No one knew where the news came from, but in no time, it had spread throughout all of Sri County.
For the nobles who had been driven from their lands by the Beastmen and forced to flee, as well as for those who had been lucky enough to escape the onslaught, this news was like welcome rain after a long drought.
The Frankish Nobles were warlike, but if they could live, who would choose to die?
Originally, the nobles of Sri County had been overjoyed when Robson withdrew all his troops.
After all, having another lord’s soldiers stationed on their own territory just felt wrong, no matter how you looked at it.
But now, as the nobles of Sri County once again faced the Beastmen, they instantly remembered why they had agreed to the formation of the Military Commission in the first place.
Just because Robson could utterly dominate the Beastmen didn’t mean they were weak.
It was just like the old saying: you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.
When Robson’s army withdrew and the routed Beastmen once again ran rampant through the lands, everyone remembered the good old days of Lord Robson.
At first, they were a little embarrassed to admit it, but as time passed, this sentiment grew stronger and stronger.
Upon hearing that Viscount Robertson’s army had reached Bai Ma Ferry, many nobles wanted to pop open a bottle of wine and celebrate.
Unfortunately, the noble lords’ happiness didn’t last long.
They soon discovered that something seemed to be amiss.
Viscount Robertson had arrived, but it seemed that was *all* he had done.
That’s right. After arriving, Robson just stayed at Bai Ma Ferry, making no move at all.
Well, one couldn’t say he made *no* move. He wandered around every day with a few hundred soldiers, but he deliberately avoided a direct confrontation with the main Beastman force.
On the Beastmen’s side, the Beastman Army had been in a rush to capture Bai Ma Ferry and hadn’t planned on wasting too much time along the way.
Now, seeing that Bai Ma Ferry was impregnable, the Beastman Army turned tail and fled, not stopping until they reached Ancient Dumu Town.
The Beastmen had clearly noticed something strange about the humans’ behavior. After making a brief appearance at Bai Ma Ferry, the humans just started picking off Beastman stragglers in the surrounding area and seemed to be doing nothing else.
This completely confused the Beastman officers. Many goblins who had never fought Robson began to complain that Mendes had been a coward. Several Goblin Tribes even started openly opposing Mendes, wanting to attack Bai Ma Ferry again and resume their previous strategy.
Mendes was also bewildered. He had no idea what the humans were up to, but he was dead set against attacking Bai Ma Ferry again.
Although he didn’t understand the meaning behind the humans’ actions, Mendes had seen that strange bird clearly back at Bai Ma Ferry. Unsure of their intentions, he didn’t dare to make a rash move.
To appease the goblins under his command, he simply let the Goblin Tribes go out and plunder.
This brought great suffering to the noble lords of Sri County.
Before, in its haste, the Beastman Army hadn’t invaded the territories of many human nobles along its path, allowing some of them to remain unscathed.
Now that the Beastman Army had fallen back, it was their turn to suffer.
...
Ravaged by the Beastman Army, the noble lords of Sri County finally couldn’t take it anymore. They gathered their last remaining forces and started heading toward Bai Ma Ferry, intending to demand an explanation from Robson.
Robson, of course, was well-prepared for this.
Although Robson was nominally staying at Bai Ma Ferry, he had actually been hunting Beastmen on a small scale outside the ferry crossing all this time.
Of course, it wasn’t that he was afraid of this group of Sri County nobles; it was just that explaining himself to each one individually would be a real hassle.
Besides, if he explained to them one by one, the timeline would be drawn out.
If the timeline was drawn out, it would be harder to fool them. They weren’t idiots; given enough time, someone would surely figure things out.
The nobles of Sri County were dumbfounded. They arrived at Bai Ma Ferry only to find that Robson wasn’t there.
However, this was where Knight Vid came into play.
Robson had spent this time doing a fair bit of "persuasion" with Vid, barely managing to get Knight Vid to willingly embrace the "great radiance" of his Lord Robson.
When the Sri County nobles arrived at Bai Ma Ferry, Knight Vid was basically responsible for appeasing and receiving them. He was also the one reporting the situation at the ferry to Robson.
Once most of the noble lords from Sri County had arrived, Robson led his army and started heading back to Bai Ma Ferry.
...
News of Robson’s return to Bai Ma Ferry was not shared with anyone else.
When everyone woke up, they received the news: Viscount Robertson was already back?
Hearing this, the crowd of Sri County’s noble lords immediately rushed excitedly out the gates.
Just outside the gates, they saw that familiar army. At that moment, the soldiers were hauling something with horse-drawn carts.
And there, in the middle of the troops, was the very Viscount Robertson they had been thinking of day and night, directing the soldiers.
"Baron Kane, hurry up and go..."
"Weren’t you the one who said we should demand an explanation? Why is it me now?"
"We all said it together! We’re all in the same boat..."
The Sri County nobles put on a classic performance right then and there.
Before Robson returned, they had been cursing him vehemently, vowing to one another that they would represent justice and properly bring this sinner of Sri County to trial.
But when Robson was actually standing before them, the nobles of Sri County looked at each other, hesitating.
For some reason, all the righteous fury they had worked up was slowly dissipating.
Robson had planned to wait for the Sri County nobles to approach him first before he started negotiating. So he pretended to be engrossed in directing his troops, acting as if he hadn’t seen them come out of the gates.
Unexpectedly, for some unknown reason, this group of Sri County nobles just stood there awkwardly, watching Lord Robson direct his army.
The thing was, there wasn’t much to arrange with the spoils of war. Robson was simply having them moved from the west side to the east, and then back to the west again.
A very strange scene instantly formed in front of Bai Ma Ferry: a crowd of nobles watching another noble command his army.
Eventually, even Robson’s own soldiers grew puzzled. Although they never questioned Robson’s orders, what was the point of moving a few carts back and forth?
Of course, despite their confusion, the soldiers continued to follow his orders. ’The Lord must have his reasons for doing this.’
’Damn it...’
Robson couldn’t take it anymore and turned to walk toward them.
Seeing Robson approach, the Sri County nobles started bickering again, shoving each other and trying to push someone else to the front.
When Robson got close, the nobles collectively took a step back, leaving a single noble standing in front of everyone else.
Baron Kane stared wide-eyed at the crowd of Sri County nobles who were now using him as a shield. ’That’s not what you all said before!’
Baron Kane was getting a firsthand taste of what was meant by the spinelessness of the nobility.
Robson didn’t care about any of that. Since Baron Kane hadn’t retreated, he was most likely the spokesperson for Sri County.
Looking at Baron Kane, Robson heard the distinct sound of someone swallowing hard.
Baron Kane turned around, a rather awkward smile on his face, and looked at Robson.
"Haha, Lord Viscount... um... have you eaten yet?"
