Chapter 431: Chapter 179: Capturing Julian
Quintus didn’t understand the true worth of Tier Six Cavalry. All he knew was that he was witnessing a miracle!
’No, even the gods couldn’t do something like this.’
Quintus stared intently at the human Heavy Cavalry Corps that had charged out. Their leader must have had a wealth of battlefield experience. They weren’t aiming to intercept the main body of the Centaur army, but its vanguard.
If the Centaurs stopped changing formation now, the Fengman Knight Order would surely pin them down from behind. Once the human Infantry arrived, it would all be over.
But if they didn’t stop, the Centaurs at the front would be overrun by the human Heavy Cavalry. Then, the Fengman Knight Order would pin them down, and once the human Infantry arrived, they would still be completely wiped out.
’They’re monsters! The worst kind of monsters!’
’For the first time, Quintus felt a pang of envy—envy for the human army. If only he had a force like that...’
’No!’
’This is no time to be admiring the enemy!’
’What should I do?’
A flurry of ideas raced through Quintus’s mind.
’In this situation, the only way out is to change formation as well, a complete and immediate redeployment.’
Quintus immediately dismissed the thought.
He didn’t know the full extent of the enemy’s strength, but he knew his own forces all too well.
Though his Centaur army was an elite force, they were nowhere near this capable.
All the Centaurs were already at a full gallop. If he ordered them to change formation now, they would just end up trampling one another.
They would rout themselves before the human Soldiers even had a chance to charge.
"Father, what do we do now?" Hughes asked.
Veins bulged on Quintus’s forehead.
"Damn it, we’ll risk it all!"
"Keep charging! I refuse to believe a few hundred can rout thousands!"
Left with no other choice, Quintus could only resort to a brutish, desperate plan.
’Just have to break through! We just have to break through!’
"The gods are with me! For the Mighty One!"
Quintus bellowed, taking the lead himself at the head of the charge.
The gods he mentioned were those of the Empire, while the Mighty One was the racial god of the Centaur Clan.
"The gods are with me!"
"Raise your battle-axes! Raise your battle-axes!"
Seeing the human Cavalry about to crash into them, the Centaur Warriors raised their weapons high, bracing for a frontal collision.
With both sides charging headlong into one another, the two armies collided in a matter of moments.
Quintus swung his battle-axe, cleaving a human cavalryman from his horse.
"ARGH!"
"URGH!"
Screams echoed all around, but Quintus couldn’t bear to look, forcing himself to focus only on the enemy before him.
’Our only way out is to smash through them!’
...
On the other side, seeing the Cavalry Corps behind her actually succeed in changing formation mid-charge, Valentino was utterly dumbfounded.
This maneuver completely shattered all the military theory she had ever learned at King’s College!
’Where in the world did Robson find these monsters?’
Valentino had now moved to the flank of her Knight Order, from where she could see the distant melee between the Heavy Cavalry and the Centaurs.
The Centaurs seemed to be completely outmatched. The human Cavalry had already couched their lances, simply waiting for the enemy to impale themselves.
Valentino instantly realized what a priceless opportunity this was.
If they could engage and trap this Centaur army, the future assault on the Centaur Royal Court would become much, much easier.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Valentino turned to the Fengman Knight Order and raised her Knight’s Sword.
"Fengman Knights! Split formation! Charge!"
"For Fengman! For..."
Upon receiving the order, the entire Fengman Knight Order immediately split in two. Led by Valentino and Knight Commander Elon, the two new wings charged toward the rear of the Centaur army.
At this point, Robson had ceased all artillery fire and ordered the entire army to force-march to the battlefield at once.
In his haste, Robson didn’t even care about keeping the army in formation. He led the soldiers of the Third Regiment and charged straight in.
The Third Regiment’s Soldiers covered the one-kilometer distance, rushing to the battlefield at quadruple speed.
Meanwhile, Quintus, caught in the thick of battle, could only see the enemies directly before him.
With the battle at its fiercest, he had no spare attention for anything else.
However, the longer Quintus fought these humans, the more alarmed he became.
Quintus’s own power level wasn’t particularly high—only Silver Sixth Tier—but the moment he unleashed his battle aura, several Extraordinary Cavalry immediately swarmed him.
Although their individual Extraordinary power was weak, these Cavalry were incredibly skilled and perfectly coordinated. When more than a dozen ganged up on him, even Quintus struggled to hold them off.
But all of that was secondary. What truly terrified Quintus were the other Soldiers.
The ordinary human Warriors.
For some reason, when these humans charged, their eyes burned with thick battle lust. Quintus couldn’t see the slightest hint of fear.
His own people often boasted of being warlike, but this was a real battlefield, a place where the slightest mistake meant death.
’How could people not cherish their own lives?’
He could feel it in his gut—something was very wrong here.
"Die!"
Just as Quintus was locked in a bitter struggle, Hughes charged in with a great axe. Seeing him coming, the human cavalryman hastily dodged away.
Seizing the opportunity, Quintus immediately disengaged, no longer willing to be tied down by this group of humans.
’It’s terrifying! If I told anyone, no one would believe that I was almost cornered and killed by a pack of mere Bronzes today!’
"Father, the humans are charging us from the rear! What do we do?"
Hughes’s face was taut with anxiety.
Quintus froze. Finding a higher vantage point, he saw that the human Infantry had, at some point, already charged into their rear.
’How could they be so fast?’
Quintus stared at the unwavering human Heavy Cavalry Corps before him, grinding his teeth.
’So this is a total defeat. Are these the same Cavalry that routed the Second Prince?’
"Relay my orders! The Extraordinaries retreat first! Then the ax-warriors of the Tuwa Tribe, then..."
Quintus rattled off one name after another.
With the battle having reached this stage, a clean retreat was impossible. All Quintus could do was try to minimize his losses.
Hughes received the order and immediately went to carry it out.
"Royal Guard! Retreat! Royal Guard! Retreat!"
...
The battle raged on. It had to be said, this band of Centaurs was quite capable—only slightly weaker than the force Robson had faced at Thermopylae.
Unfortunately for them, even if that force from Thermopylae were here today, Robson was confident he could crush them all the same.
Things were different now. The First Regiment’s proportion of Tier Six Soldiers was now over ninety percent. With more than a thousand Tier Six Soldiers, as long as no Extraordinaries intervened, they could curb-stomp any opposition. No one could stand against them.
Even if Extraordinaries did intervene, they would need a two-to-one advantage, and they’d have to be high-quality ones at that.
As the Centaur Elites fled, the outcome of the battle became increasingly clear.
Finally, someone—it was impossible to say who—shouted for everyone to run for their lives, and the entire Centaur army began to rout.
