Chapter 750.1: Finding The Breakthrough Point
The underground monitoring room was shrouded in deathly silence. Whether they were Enterprise or New Alliance researchers, every one of them stared with wide eyes in utter disbelief.
Everyone except Hyrja. As the only researcher involved with checking Chu Guang’s physical condition, she was probably the only person in the room who knew what was really going on.
Her fair face was flushed crimson, and her eyes sparkled with excitement. As though beholding an unbelievable scientific miracle, she stared at the monitor without blinking. Her eyes were filled with fervor as she muttered under her breath, "So this is the power of a 60% unlocked genetic sequence!"
"This is... this is even more outrageous than the theoretical values from our simulations!"
No, could he still even be considered a carbon-based lifeform?!
The security cameras couldn't even capture the trajectory of that punch at their frame rate!
Her heart pounded violently, and even her breathing became ragged. Then, as if struck by a sudden realization, Hyrja froze before muttering to herself, "Wait, that unidentified talent! Could it be related to this as well?!"
Was it simply enhanced strength? Or could it be something more than just strength?
Just as the researchers were still reeling in astonishment, the monster clad in biological exoframe suddenly exploded into motion once more with a furious roar.
It was clearly enraged as its savage bellow reverberated through the entire corridor.
Madness burned within those dark emerald eyes as muscles rivaling those of an evolved form swelled with terrifying force. The Beast King’s enormous body shot forward once again like a cannon shell and the explosive power he generated seemed even greater than before.
He might be moving even faster, but the outcome was exactly the same. He took another punch square in the face! This time, he didn't even have the chance to cry out before crashing heavily onto the floor.
"Is that really all you've got?" Looking at the Beast King half-buried beneath shattered chunks of concrete, Chu Guang gradually lost interest. He casually reached down, picked up his hammer standing beside him, and walked over.
Hearing those steady footsteps approaching, the Beast King struggled to climb out from the rubble. Wiping the viscous fluid dripping from his mouth, he glared fixedly at Chu Guang. "What... what kind of monster are you?!"
His voice trembled slightly and even his razor-sharp claws shook uncontrollably. It wasn’t from fear. It was simply that those three consecutive punches had completely thrown his endocrine system into chaos.
"I'm not a monster. I'm simply myself." Chu Guang answered calmly.
"Impossible!" The Beast King roared, cutting him off. His emerald eyes locked onto Chu Guang. "That cannot possibly be human strength! Even if you modified that exoframe, your body could never withstand that kind of speed or power!"
Chu Guang smiled faintly. "Modified it? There was never any need."
He knew perfectly well the Beast King was trying to bait information out of him. Unfortunately, if he didn’t know what he was doing, how was he supposed to tell others? He had no idea what was happening to him, much less anyone else.
According to conclusions Hyrja had reached long ago, every advancement made by his players in exploring the genetic sequence ultimately accumulated within him in some form.
In a sense, his very existence was itself a singularity beyond the observable horizon. Current scientific theory could only glimpse its surface. It couldn't approach its true nature.
It was much like the Morphogenetic Field connecting all the players and that also included the Project Complete Human the Torch Church had pursued in vain.
Disbelief flickered within the Beast King's pupils. Clearly, he refused to believe Chu Guang's explanation but Chu Guang had no intention of explaining further.
He slowly raised the massive square-headed warhammer. The nitrogen compressed across its striking face had become so dense it was nearly solid.
He spoke calmly, as though merely announcing the sentence of execution. "Go to hell. That's where your kind belongs."
A violent torrent of compressed air erupted instantly. Like countless razor-sharp blades, it tore apart windows and even carved into the surrounding walls.
There were no flashy techniques. After all, there was no need for them. Swinging the warhammer in a full arc, Chu Guang brought it crashing down upon the Beast King crouching before him.
Faced with the lightning-fast strike, the Beast King instinctively raised both arms to block. The biological exoframe he had once taken such pride in was torn apart like paper. His arms exploded into fragments. The agonizing pain forced a howl from his throat, but the raging shockwave rammed straight into his mouth, inflating his cheeks like balloons and swallowing the scream.
Then, the warhammer, after pulverizing both arms, slammed squarely onto his skull. His head was driven down into his shoulders as the upper half of his body was crushed into pulp.
The violent shockwave blasted dust throughout the corridor.
When everything finally settled, the hallway was splattered with crimson droplets. It was as though it had rained blood.
At the center of that bloody storm, only Chu Guang remained. With his warhammer in hand and standing beside a flattened puddle of flesh, he stood alone, the only victor in a battle against monsters.
Hurried footsteps echoed from the far end of the corridor. Lu Bei rushed over from the basement with a squad of soldiers, panic written across his face.
The moment he'd realized the administrator was missing, he immediately brought everyone over. Yet what greeted him was a scene beyond imagination.
Not only Lu Bei. Every solider behind him froze.
This is our administrator? The same administrator who is always gentle, broad-minded, and almost never lost his temper?
Even though they had always known he was powerful, none of them had imagined anything approaching the level he had shown.
Their eyes shone with reverence as they stared at the newfound side of their leader.
Their loyalty had never been based solely upon his strength. Yet upon the wasteland, where survival of the fittest remained the ultimate law. Overwhelming strength naturally commanded respect. That was simply reality.
...
Inside the underground monitoring room, the researchers remained speechless. After a long silence, an elderly professor from Cloud University gulped nervously. Poking the New Alliance researcher beside him with a finger, he asked in a trembling voice, "... That really is your administrator?"
Originally, he had wanted to ask if the man was still human. But after thinking about it, he decided that sounded rather offensive and quickly changed his wording.
The New Alliance researcher also looked completely stunned.
Still, he instinctively nodded.
"Of course. He’s the one and only."
A female researcher from Cloud University, whose eyes were burning with excitement, grabbed the person beside her from Camp 101. "What technology is this? I don't mean to pry, I just want to understand what happened."
"Could you... lend me a sample of his..."
Before anyone could answer, Hyrja interrupted without the slightest hesitation, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "Not a chance! Go away! Shoo! Don’t even think about it!"
...
Outside the research institute, the players and NPCs gathered on the open ground likewise stared toward the breached wall and the corridor where Chu Guang stood. The moment that winged monster had smashed through the wall earlier, everyone had noticed the disturbance.
A moment after, they heard the deafening booms that sounded like artillery fire.
Realizing the New Alliance Administrator was inside, General Babita's emotions became complicated. Though... There was slightly more joy than worry. Deep down, he had even found himself rooting for the monster.
Elsewhere, a sergeant from the Hound Special Forces looked toward a Storm Corps soldier beside him and frowned. "... Your administrator is in there. Aren't you going to help him?"
Hearing the NPC's question, Ghostbuster looked at him strangely.
Isn't this just a cutscene? What's there to panic about?
Given the administrator's level and stats... Thinking that thing could actually hurt him was seriously underestimating the power of technology.
Waving a hand dismissively, Ghostbuster laughed. "No need. By the time we get there, he'll probably have already dismantled that thing into spare parts."
The Hound Special Forces’ soldier blinked. "...?"
As exaggerated as that description sounded, Ghostbuster had still underestimated the respected administrator. Strictly speaking, forget dismantling it into parts. Judging by the wall he painted a spotty red, there probably wasn't even a single intact part remaining.
Looking down at the thick blood coating his body, Chu Guang remained silent for a moment before muttering, "... I think I overdid it."
I should've left the head intact. And now I'm covered in blood...
Though, it didn't really matter. X-16 would clean everything up afterward anyway.
Shaking the chunks of flesh and blood from his hammer, Chu Guang stepped over what remained of the Beast King. He climbed the stairs to the third floor of the institute and stopped before the collapsed section of wall.
The instant that familiar figure appeared within the breach, almost everyone present stared in disbelief.
Well, everyone except the residents of Shelter 404. The players who had fought beside him countless times knew exactly how powerful he was.
More than that, he was like a banner. No matter what kind of enemy stood before them, simply standing beside him filled them with unwavering courage and absolute confidence in victory.
The moment he appeared upon the battlefield, almost every player erupted into excited cheers.
"The administrator is awesome!"
"Long live the New Alliance!"
"WOWIE!"
Bathed in those exhilarating cheers, the soldiers of the Hound Special Forces looked around in astonishment before following everyone's gaze toward the research institute. They couldn't understand what the Shelter residents were shouting, but they could clearly feel the passion burning within those cheers.
The man they regarded as their leader had led them from one victory to the next. Not one of them doubted that their future was bright.
Many soldiers from the Bugra Free State couldn't help showing expressions of envy. They fought only to repay crushing debts. They couldn't understand such faith. Yet that didn't stop them from looking enviously at those people whose eyes shone so brightly.
If only we had an administrator who truly cared about us too...
Almost everyone found themselves thinking the same thing. Compared to Ideal City's lofty ideals, that dream somehow seemed much easier to achieve.
Unfortunately, people who held such hopes usually found themselves choosing only between one terrible option and another even worse one. More often than not, they weren't even given the chance to choose at all.
