Chapter 767.3: ()
As one of the earliest employees of the Survivor’s Daily and the editor who had uncovered the literary treasure: Bore the Awakener, she keenly sensed that this collection titled Red Soil possessed potential no less remarkable than the former.
The suffering survivors of the wasteland did not include only Bore of Boulder Town.
There was also L of White Elephant City!
She had heard the cry that struck directly at the soul. She believed others would hear it as well, especially the members of the Workers’ Association who had experienced Boulder Town’s transformation!
They had ended the wasteland surrounding themselves, but the broader wasteland had not yet ended.
She believed the companions who had united back then would not be satisfied with only the ribs and beer they enjoyed today! Surely, they would also be willing to extend a hand to people enduring the same suffering!
Well, at least some of them would! People like Spielberg and the others at least.
“I want to write a special column about him!” Dori’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Ample Time. “More people should hear the voices from that place instead of merely enjoying the cheap products supplied by its survivors. No, more precisely, this is also for our sake. If we allow the slave owners to continue exploiting them, our interests will eventually be harmed as well, won’t they? At that point, Silver will become another form of chips, just like the things you described earlier.”
As she spoke, Dori stared intently at Ample Time. Her clever little expression bore no resemblance whatsoever to the adorably foolish girl from an hour earlier.
As expected of someone from Boulder Town. Even the bridge of her nose seemed to be made of rebellious bones.
In Dawn City, saying something like that about anyone other than the residents of Shelter 404 would earn a person greetings directed at their entire family.
Ample Time smiled faintly but did not deny her reasoning. “Congratulations. While most people are still playing the previous version, you’ve already entered the next one ahead of schedule. What I mean is, the problem you described genuinely exists, and it is precisely something we intend to address during the next phase.”
“As early as the industrial age before the Prosperity Era, it was already proven that one-sided extraction was unsustainable. Unequal relationships eventually collapse once they reach a critical point, whether they are relationships between individuals or between different settlements. The various methods we adopt during specific periods can only delay the arrival of that critical point and create room for more flexible decisions.”
“In the end, we have only two choices. Either establish a protected region similar to Singularity City, isolating the Poro Province from mainstream society while observing it and waiting for new developments, or help its people board the ship to the new world and participate together in the enormous discussion of how to bring the Wasteland Era to an end.”
His plan for Port Gallon was to make it a secondary-industry base, while the Poro Province would serve as a source of human resources and minerals. However, if the region could develop into an enormous consumer market, he would also be pleased to see it happen.
It wasn’t just because it would benefit Baiyue Strait Development Company, but also because he did not particularly want to stand in opposition to the New Alliance’s other settlements and survivors.
The Mutant Slime Mold Research Committee’s war in Ocean Edge Province had, in fact, concealed certain problems.
Dawn City and Boulder Town could fill their stomachs solely with orders for military supplies and logistics. The entire Mutant Slime Mold Research Committee was transferring money into the settlements of River Valley Province, while River Valley Province’s residents could use that money to purchase consumer goods from other regions.
Once the war ended, or the New Alliance’s expansion slowed, or another crisis erupted, some of the problems that had been temporarily set aside would inevitably surface.
The administrator’s decision to approve Baiyue Strait Development Company’s listing plan at that particular moment had presumably taken those issues into consideration.
As one of the server’s T0 tier players, Ample Time had to ensure that his faction boss possessed cards to play.
After a round of consideration, Ample Time suddenly laughed. “It seems you aren’t the only person who thinks this article is good. I actually agree. What would you think about including it in Port Gallon’s textbooks?”
“That’s an excellent idea!” Dori’s eyes sparkled as she continued in a voice as melodious as a lark. “Compared with the textbooks we provide, their own stories will naturally resonate more strongly with their compatriots. They need their own symbols and totems!”
“Haha! Then that’s what we’ll do!” In only a few seconds, Ample Time made the decision.
...
That evening, after completing the report Xiaoyu had requested, he found time to send a telegram to Port Gallon’s Governor’s Office, instructing them to include Red Soil in the local textbooks.
Things were no longer as they had been when the Burning Corps first landed in Port Gallon, when a battle report required two or three days to reach Dawn City and the fighting might already be over by the time a reply completed the round trip.
Information infrastructure was also a form of infrastructure. The New Alliance’s communications base stations had always been developed alongside its roads and railways. By establishing numerous relay stations, telegrams from Dawn City could bypass interference and reach Port Gallon directly. Once the undersea cables were completed, even telephone calls and video communication would become possible.
He did not have to wait long before receiving a reply from Yadoo, secretary of the Governor’s Office.
To Ample Time’s surprise, however, the response concerned more than merely the localized textbooks. It also mentioned Laxi.
[The Port Gallon’s Educator Association is currently organizing teachers from public schools to compile textbooks suited to the needs of local survivors. They have already noticed the articles appearing in the Survivor’s Daily. Not only Red Soil, but several other articles have also received recommendations from both local teachers and externally recruited educators. I will continue monitoring the progress of the relevant work on your behalf.]
[There is also another matter. Influenced by the expeditionary force’s series of disastrous performances at Ten Peaks Mountain, the youth of Port Gallon became furious after learning that the Xilande Empire intended to send even more cannon fodder to the front. They have collectively expressed contempt for the empire’s actions. Representatives from various professions and industries have recently submitted petitions requesting that the Port Gallon authorities refuse to return the Gray Wolf Army prisoners of war, or at least permit those who volunteer to remain to stay. They fear that the young men we release will be treated by the Xilande Empire as expendable resources and sent to the front in exchange for compensation.]
[The anger is not limited to the various levels of civil society. It has also emerged within the authorities themselves. Laxi, director of the Civil Defense Office, submitted his resignation this morning. Nearly 30 mid and lower-ranking militia officers submitted their resignations alongside him. I attempted to persuade them to remain, but they are determined to leave. I do not possess the authority to handle this matter, so I can only report it to you and await your decision.]
He resigned?!
Ample Time had never expected the man to possess such a temper. For a moment, he was so surprised that he remained stunned for quite some time.
The resignation letter was attached beneath the telegram.
Without pausing, he continued reading. Although the document displayed there was not the original, he trusted that Yadoo would not deceive him concerning something this important.
[Respected Mr. Ample Time, I am grateful for your promotion. Without you, I would not be the man I am today. I also ask that you convey my greetings to the administrator. I know that he has always cared about the affairs of the wasteland and has continued watching over us.]
[However, I am merely a crude man. Although I recognize a few words, I cannot produce elegant phrases. Still, I trust that you understand my unwavering loyalty. I have carried out every instruction you gave me.]
[Submitting this resignation today is truly unavoidable. It is entirely because those bastards in the north are absolutely intolerable!]
[I hate them for their failure to fight properly and for wasting the money and provisions you sponsored. I hate their cowardice for making themselves the laughingstock of everyone inside and outside the Southern Sea. Most of all, I hate them for squandering the lives of my compatriots!]
[If everyone becomes completely disappointed in them, the survivors of the Poro Province will never again have a chance to rise. It is not yet too late. The resistance has not exhausted its destiny, and I must come out of retirement!]
[If you believe I am acting recklessly, give me a single instruction and I will return my life to you. I will never place you in a difficult position. But if you permit me to travel north and save our people, then once I accomplish my task, I will never forget your grace!]
[I, Laxi, will always remain your subordinate. If you command me to go east, I will never go west!]
Ample Time read the resignation letter twice from beginning to end without managing to say a single word. After a long time, he finally squeezed out a grunt. “Good grief.”
Did the fella really write this himself?
