Chapter 992: Demons in Plain Sight.(2).
"A little early to be telling me this, no?"
Alan complained to his communicator as he kept flying through the clouds. The carrier struggling to catch up with him. Shortly after leaving Sacramento, much to everyone’s delight, the group was busy beyond belief.
They were expected to clear a minimum of three dungeons every day, along with dealing with a hundred monsters in the surrounding area. Each and every single day was a grueling experience for the entire convoy.
The monsters and dungeons here were different than the ones back in Phoenix City, they didn’t rely on numbers but individual strengths. Each Guild had to go on multiple raids in a single day, with Alan and Amanda stepping in if things got too serious.
It was annoying, but then again, it was his job to take care of the little brats, so Alan didn’t complain much. Besides, every day of travel meant he was getting closer to the beach he was born at. Where [Dominatus] came to be.
However, as always, things didn’t go as planned.
Sarcastically, Alan complained to the Howard once more, who anxiously answered back.
[Well... Their movements are strange. It’s entirely up to you if you want to deal with them or not, but the president would appreciate it if you managed to... control them... and... and...]
Howard stopped talking for a while, angering Alan further. He clicked his tongue as Ryan quickly covered for his friend.
[We expected there to be a clash in Sacramento. Jyle Hikkins has a history of bad responses to people threatening his rule over the city... Since he remained passive, the settlements all around these areas are getting worried. They thought he would be able to contain you, that he would be able to send you back and they would be safe...]
He coughed, before quickly continuing. Alan could sense a slight tinge of fear and anxiety in his voice. It appeared the group was becoming scared of him since his ’confrontation’ with Jyle.
Nobody really knew what happened inside the room, but the ’dick’ measuring contest Alan and Jyle were having which was actually them taking a peek at each other’s mana was visible to everyone.
Even outside the complex, they felt strong fluctuations of mana that Alan later realized were released from the medallions. Nobody knew what happened when both of them were alone, but they speculated that Jyle and Alan fought with mana.
It didn’t help when both of them seemed to be in a jovial mood when leaving the room. It also helped Alan’s cause when the rest of the convoy got better accommodations after the meeting.
Apparently, fighting one of the five legendary SSS-rank beings and forcing him to agree to some of your requested demanded a degree of respect from everyone in the convoy. It was funny, considering Alan hadn’t even asked Jyle to improve their accommodations.
[Now that we are actually advancing to Big Bertha and Bobby, the settlements are scared, most likely, they think your there on orders, or that you had a confrontation with Jyle and are going there to release some stress.
Reports indicate that all of them have begun evacuating. Numerous settlers have already abandoned the ruins of Seattle. They think your coming for them... and it would be appreciated if you dealt with them.]
"Why do they think I’m coming for them?"
[They all have ties to the Obelisk, their the riff-raff, most of them, anyways. Other than that, all of them are criminals. Most of them escaped from prison and were death row inmates. They believe your coming for the bounties on their head.]
Alan rolled his eyes as he closed in on the city of Seattle, or whatever remained of it. Humanity had never reclaimed it, partly because of the presence of actual demons, demonic humans, and powerful monsters. It was too much trouble.
Meanwhile, the demons and demonic humans made it their home. Seattle was different from the developed Sacramento. Most of the city was still in ruins, with four distinct settlements having appeared, each led by an SS-rank. They survived by selling goods to the black market in Sacramento and the Obelisk.
Almost all of them had some sort of contract with the Obelisk, and with the organization in hiding and their headquarter literally turned to nothing but dust, it was obvious they were panicking.
Even more so when they just learned that Jyle Hikkins didn’t bother dealing with Alan, it basically confirmed his strength as an SSS-rank, and that Alan was involved in the invasion of Terra Damnum.
’I mean, I didn’t even do much!’
He was right, he just held back a hundred thousand murderous fishes each the size of cars. But in the end, he just kept them in place while the army blasted them to bits! Alan was a symbol in that conquest! The real work was done by the humans!
He cursed inwardly, and declared.
"Well, if they mind their business, I don’t give a damn. We don’t have to stop in Seattle, do we? Just fly over and go to... which one was first? Bertha or Bobby?"
Instead of answering, Ryan tried to convince Alan to deal with the threat in Seattle, much to Alan’s displeasure.
[Wouldn’t it be better if we did take care of them? They are demonic humans, and each and every one of them is a horrendous criminal. The entire expedition will earn a significant amount of merit if we deal with the criminals hiding in Seattle.]
Alan retorted back, his voice filled with annoyance and a tinge of anger, immediately shutting the mouths of Ryan and Howard, who were eager to get a promotion after this expedition. It would probably look good on their record, even if everybody knew Alan did most, if not all of the work.
"Who is we? Who exactly is ’We’ in this scenario? I’m the only one capable of taking them down. Do you want the little pups to go against criminals? They’ll die, and I am not helping any wannabe hero. If they decide to leave us alone, we do the same.
It’s an annoyance at best, and I’d prefer if this trip went without issues. Do you have any idea how much work I have after this?"
There was no response, and Alan was glad there was none. He was getting close to his birthplace, and every second mattered. Alan, no, [Dominatus] itself wanted to see it.
There was something waiting for him there, something he could feel, something his instincts were screaming at him to hurry towards.
