"Okay."

Kang Li replied with a smile.

Cai Xiufen: "That’s settled then, I’m hanging up."

Kang Li: "Goodbye."

The call ended, and Cai Xiufen put the receiver back on the landline phone. She said, "No need to wait for your mom and your eldest brother. One will be home late, and the other is staying at a classmate’s tonight. Let’s eat now."

Ming Wei: "I’ll set the table." With that, Ming Wei got up from the sofa and quickly disappeared out of the living room.

Before school started, Kang Li’s mom and a few others moved back in with Captain Kang and his wife, living in the courtyard house near Shuimu University.

After dinner, Ming Wei took Bun and the other two for a walk in the courtyard to help them digest. She also watched over them as they washed up, and didn’t return to her room until the three kids were in bed and asleep. She was about to sleep herself when Ming Han knocked on her door, came in, and asked this question.

"Grandma already said at dinner, Mom is out handling something..."

Before she could finish, Ming Han cut her off, "You’re lying!"

Ming Wei frowned, "Why would I lie?"

"You should ask yourself that."

Ming Han said, "When we were eating, I could see it clearly. You obviously had something on your mind, and it had to do with Mom."

Hearing this, Ming Wei pressed her lips together and didn’t speak for a while.

"Is Mom being out tonight related to Big Brother?"

Ming Han said, "Tomorrow’s Monday, we have school. There’s no way Big Brother is staying at a classmate’s tonight."

Ming Wei: "Why not? Big Brother can just go to school from his friend’s place."

"Homework. His homework is here at home!"

"He was injured doing something brave—he got hurt by a criminal. But Mom says he had surgery and his life isn’t in danger now."

Kang Li hadn’t told Ming Wei over the phone that Min Rui was hurt saving Xiao Tong; she had just explained simply that Min Rui had been injured by a criminal while acting bravely.

Ming Han: "Which hospital? I want to see Big Brother right now!"

Ming Wei: "Don’t give Mom more trouble!"

"Just going to see Big Brother means we’re causing trouble for Mom?"

Ming Han glared at Ming Wei, "Are you coming or not?"

"You want Grandma and Grandpa to find out?"

Ming Wei said, "They’re getting old. If they knew Big Brother was hurt and in the hospital, and got worried and something happened, what would you do then?"

"I..."

Ming Han’s lips moved, but he couldn’t say anything for a while.

"Mom didn’t tell Grandma directly on the phone. She asked me to hide it, too. She’s worried they’d get anxious if they found out. If you make a big scene now, Grandma and Grandpa are bound to notice something."

"But Big Brother is lying in the hospital right now!"

"Didn’t you hear what I said just now? Mom said Big Brother isn’t in any life-threatening danger. She told us not to worry."

"You didn’t tell me—I had to ask it out of you myself."

Ming Han looked resentful. "Luo Ming Wei, I’m your second brother. You shouldn’t have kept this from me when something happened to Big Brother."

"You think I wanted to keep it inside? I’m feeling anxious and uneasy too. I only kept quiet because I thought if I told you, you’d react and tip off Grandma and Grandpa."

Ming Wei rolled her eyes at Ming Han and said, "We need to cooperate with Mom and see what she plans next."

"The college entrance exam is right around the corner. Who knows if Big Brother will recover in time?"

Ming Han voiced his worry.

"Us being anxious now won’t help. Better to wait for Mom to come back and ask her in detail. I think Big Brother should be able to take the exam just fine."

After a brief pause, Ming Wei added, "Even if he misses it, he can always take it next year."

Around ten-thirty, Kang Li got home and parked the car at the gate.

To avoid waking anyone, she tiptoed into Min Rui’s room, quickly packed a few changes of clothes and toiletries, and then went to the kitchen for a lunchbox before heading to the gate.

"Mom!"

Just as she was putting things into the car, Kang Li heard Ming Han shout from behind. She turned around to see Ming Han standing at the gate, though she didn’t know when he’d gotten there.

"You... Why are you standing at the gate this late instead of sleeping?"

Kang Li leaned against the car door and frowned at Ming Han.

"Is my big brother seriously hurt?"

Ming Han got straight to the point.

"Did Weiwei tell you?"

Kang Li asked, though she already knew the answer. Seeing Ming Han nod, she said, "Left arm shattered, broke two ribs. Surgery went well. Everything else is okay."

Ming Han: "It’s going to affect his college entrance exam, right?"

"His right hand is fine, his legs are fine. The exam is about twenty days away. He’ll be able to sit the test no problem."
