Chapter 37: You Have Me

Chapter 37: Chapter 37: You Have Me

Gao Yuan didn’t hesitate and answered the video call.

"Where are you?"

"Open the door!"

Lin Wanyu and Gao Yuan spoke at the same time.

The five people in the room heard Gao Yuan’s voice through the phone and all looked toward the door. They never imagined that Gao Yuan would arrive just moments after Lin Wanyu had sent her message.

Speak of the devil!

Lin Wanyu cried out and jumped to her feet, rushing straight for the door.

Although his failure to reply instantly had left her feeling anxious, the sight of him appearing at her door the very next moment made her heart swell with happiness all over again.

This was more touching than hearing "I love you" a hundred times.

When she opened the door, Gao Yuan’s tall figure was standing outside. Lin Wanyu threw herself into his arms.

Gao Yuan tenderly stroked Lin Wanyu’s hair. The moment the door opened, he had seen the tearstains on her face, and his heart had ached for her.

"I’m here."

At these words, Lin Wanyu burst into tears.

Her sobs grew louder, and in moments, the front of Gao Yuan’s shirt was soaked through.

Those two simple words from Gao Yuan carried immense power.

What woman, when facing hardship, wouldn’t hope to hear her man say those words?

Those simple words represented a rock-solid shield, a pillar of support.

Thinking something was wrong, Lin Wanyu’s family rushed to the doorway, only to find her sobbing in the arms of a relatively young man.

This was Gao Yuan’s first time seeing Lin Wanyu’s family.

’He figured the middle-aged man and woman must be Lin Wanyu’s parents. And if he wasn’t mistaken, the couple beside them was the younger brother and sister-in-law she often talked about.’

Gao Yuan met their gazes calmly. He could sense an aura of authority from Lin Wanyu’s father—a very powerful one.

Unafraid, he gently eased Lin Wanyu out of his embrace, reached out to wipe the tears from her face, and then, with an arm around her, guided her into the room.

Gao Yuan had a naturally calm and steady demeanor, but when he answered the video call, he had switched on a confident, commanding presence.

So when Lin Wanyu’s parents looked into his eyes, their initial impressions began to shift.

After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul; you can tell a lot about a person by looking into them.

’This young man is no simple character,’ Lin Hongnian thought to himself. ’To have cultivated such a presence at his age, he must be backed by immense wealth or power.’

The genuine affection Gao Yuan showed for his daughter only made him more pleased.

Li Xiumei, however, had a completely different take. Not being a part of the business world, she sensed a gentle and cultured air about Gao Yuan.

Such a disposition couldn’t be cultivated without a strong cultural and educational background.

Initially, she had thought her daughter was being too forward, throwing herself into a man’s arms like that, but now, any trace of disapproval vanished.

As for Lin Wanyu’s younger brother and sister-in-law, at this moment they could only watch silently.

Frankly, they weren’t experienced enough to perceive such nuances. All they could see was a handsome man who seemed dependable.

"It’s a pleasure to meet you both. I’m Gao Yuan."

"I’m sorry this is all so sudden. I apologize for not coming prepared with gifts."

’Gao Yuan was doing his best to recall lines from TV shows about what to say when meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time, hoping to make a good impression.’

But in the eyes of Lin Wanyu’s parents, it all came across completely differently. To them, Gao Yuan seemed incredibly polite and well-mannered.

Lin Wanyu, however, could feel his nervousness from the way he was tightly gripping her hand.

She took his hand with her other one, trying to help him relax.

After exchanging a few pleasantries, everyone returned to the living room and sat down again.

The kind of presence a person has is palpable when you meet them.

Thanks to the strong first impression, the intense grilling Lin Wanyu had envisioned never materialized.

Gao Yuan and Lin Wanyu’s parents got along splendidly.

Lin Hongnian: "Gao Yuan, what sort of work are you in now?"

Gao Yuan: "I’m currently exploring my options."

Lin Hongnian: "That’s true. The market is slow right now, and every industry is facing challenges. But that also means there are opportunities. The ability to wait for the right moment before making a move is a rare and valuable quality in someone so young."

Lin Hongnian had already assumed Gao Yuan was working for his family’s business. Since Gao Yuan didn’t elaborate on his background, Lin Hongnian didn’t press further and simply offered some praise.

’That’s all in your head,’ Gao Yuan thought. ’The truth is I have too little capital, so I can only consider what’s possible right now.’

Li Xiumei: "Where is your family from? And what do your parents do for a living?"

Gao Yuan: "My family is from Yu Province. My mother is a teacher, and my father works in the pharmaceutical industry in Guangdong."

Li Xiumei: "Oh, that’s wonderful. Teachers are such respectable people, and the pharmaceutical industry has been booming lately!"

Li Xiumei was very pleased to hear his mother was a teacher. She subconsciously pictured her as a university professor, which would make his a family of scholars.

’My mom is a teacher, alright,’ Gao Yuan thought, ’an elementary school teacher, and she’s retired now. And my dad works in a lab that breeds research monkeys in Beijing. I guess that counts as the pharmaceutical industry.’

Of course, Li Xiumei still had to ask about the short videos, which was her main concern.

Gao Yuan’s explanation was that he wanted to document their wonderful life together, so that one day, when they were old, they could look back and remember all the little moments.

This explanation not only convinced Lin Wanyu’s parents, but it even moved Qi Zilin, who was listening on the side.

A man like that is one in a million!

Not only was his family background a good match, but he himself was so perfect—willing to be with Lin Wanyu even after knowing she was divorced.

As noon approached, Lin Hongnian suggested they all have a casual lunch together.

Gao Yuan’s expression turned troubled. ’He had been barely holding his act together this whole time; if he had to stay for a meal, his cover would surely be blown!’

Seeing Gao Yuan’s expression, Lin Hongnian tentatively asked, "Gao Yuan, do you have plans today?"

"I’m supposed to meet a friend today. I was actually here to pick up Wanyu so we could go together."

"But since you’ve invited me, I can just let my friend know. Having a meal with you both is more important."

Lin Hongnian and Li Xiumei were very pleased to hear this.

’This boy not only has a remarkable presence, but he’s also so considerate. As for his looks and age, he’s more than good enough for our daughter, even with her previous marriage. We were worried his parents might look down on her for being divorced!’

They might have been happy, but Gao Yuan certainly wasn’t. He quickly tugged on Lin Wanyu’s hand.

Lin Wanyu felt the tug on her hand and understood immediately. She turned to her parents and said, "Mom, Dad, the friend Gao Yuan is meeting is very important—it’s business-related."

She didn’t say much, but the implication was clear.

Gao Yuan had an important business lunch. He was willing to cancel it, but they couldn’t possibly let him make such a sacrifice.

"Oh, is that so? In that case, you two should go ahead. It’s important for young people to focus on their careers."

"Make sure you come over for a home-cooked meal sometime. Your Auntie will make you some of her specialties!"

At Lin Hongnian’s words, a weight was lifted from Gao Yuan’s shoulders. He quickly stood up and bowed slightly. "Thank you both for your kindness!"

Lin Wanyu immediately stood up as well, ready to pull Gao Yuan out the door.

Just as she was leaving, she saw her father wink at her, and she understood.

’It really pays to have someone on the inside at critical moments!’

In reality, her understanding of the gesture was completely different from what Lin Hongnian had intended to convey.

Lin Hongnian had been so impressed by Gao Yuan that he hadn’t doubted his words for a second.

The reason he’d winked was that he’d noticed Gao Yuan’s subtle tug on Lin Wanyu’s hand. He assumed the young couple wanted some private time together and had deliberately given them an easy out.

Just as he walked out of Lin Wanyu’s home, the sound of a mission completion notification echoed in his mind.
