Chapter 411: Chapter 379: Thousandfold Water Spears
’I wasn’t afraid you’d never come—only that you wouldn’t dare.’
Seeing the Earth Dark Sect cultivators follow him into the shoals, Zhao Lin couldn’t help but rejoice inwardly.
He knew he couldn’t possibly defeat and kill three late-stage Qi Refining cultivators in a one-on-three fight. But with the help of his sect’s traps, it was a different story.
Kuimu Beach had a total of eight traps, two in each of the four cardinal directions. The one closest to Zhao Lin was to the northeast, hidden beneath a large reef.
A trap could be considered a simplified Array with a single function. It was set with only one offensive Magic, which would be unleashed the moment it was triggered.
A few minutes later, Qingchi, Furukawa Yu, and Changze had closed the distance to just over forty zhang behind Zhao Lin, close enough to detect him with their Divine Sense.
"We’ve caught up!"
Changze shouted excitedly, then chuckled. "Nowhere left to run, are you?"
"Stay close, and watch out for traps!"
Qingchi warned, scanning their surroundings to guard against a hidden ambush.
Furukawa Yu remained silent, rapidly forming a Spell. He pushed his Fubo Skill to its absolute limit and surged forward, taking the lead.
He could launch an attack as soon as a target was within range of his Divine Sense.
However, Zhao Lin was at the very edge of his Divine Sense’s range. It would be difficult to land an effective blow from this distance. ’Just a little closer...’
A cruel smile touched Furukawa Yu’s lips as he mentally plotted all the ways he would torture and kill Zhao Lin.
Little did he know, this was all part of Zhao Lin’s plan.
A few breaths later, Zhao Lin reached a reef shaped like a crouching tiger—the exact location of the trap marked on his map.
For some reason, two lines of a poem by Song the Third from his past life suddenly surfaced in Zhao Lin’s mind.
"Like a fierce tiger on a barren hill, it lies in wait, fangs and claws concealed."
’How strange,’ he thought. But on second thought, it was rather fitting. The last line just needed a little tweak: ’Blood will stain the shores of Kuimu Beach.’
Once he entered the trap’s effective radius, Zhao Lin deactivated his Water Manipulation Skill. He began swimming with his arms and legs, propelling himself forward with all his might.
The trap required Mana fluctuations of a certain intensity to activate, a measure to prevent accidental triggers.
A passing Fish Demon or a Clam Demon breathing Spiritual Qi wouldn’t set it off. However, a cultivator using a proficient-level Magic or higher in the area was another matter entirely.
This was precisely why Zhao Lin had dared not continue using his Water Manipulation Skill.
’Now, let’s see if the enemy takes the bait!’
Furukawa Yu, focused solely on his mad dash forward, saw that he was about to catch Zhao Lin. He was so excited he could barely contain himself. He drew his eyebrow blade, its tip aimed directly at Zhao Lin.
Qingchi, however, sensed something was amiss. He noticed that Zhao Lin had slowed down and that the swirling currents from his Water Manipulation Skill had vanished.
’What’s happening? Is he running out of Mana?’
’Impossible. Even with a lower cultivation level, he should be able to last longer than fifteen minutes.’
At that thought, a realization struck him like a bolt of lightning: ’It’s a trap!’
"Furukawa, don’t go any further!"
Qingchi yelled.
Hearing the warning, Changze was startled and immediately froze in place.
But Furukawa Yu’s eyes were fixed on Zhao Lin. Oblivious to everything else, he subconsciously replied, "What did you say?"
As he spoke, his Divine Sense remained locked onto Zhao Lin. His hands began to form a Spell, the Water Moon Slash, which rapidly began to take shape.
Just then, a low hum emanated from the base of the reef, and the seawater within a radius of dozens of zhang began to vibrate.
The vibration wasn’t intense, but every drop of water seemed to resonate with it, and the sea itself grew thick and viscous.
Caught within it, Furukawa Yu felt a sense of foreboding wash over him.
"This is bad! Fall back!"
Qingchi’s expression changed dramatically. He grabbed Changze beside him and turned to flee.
Furukawa Yu finally realized something was wrong. But because his Fubo Skill was at full power, his forward momentum was immense, making it difficult to retreat. He had no choice but to try and veer away, moving to the side to get clear of the reef.
"Trying to run? Too late!"
The trap was already triggered; Zhao Lin wasn’t about to let him escape. He spun around and unleashed a sharp, silver blade that shot through the water with incredible speed.
"Ice Blade Skill!"
A chill shot through Furukawa Yu’s heart.
’I’m caught in the trap. If I don’t get out of here fast, I’ll be dead the moment the Magic activates—not even a corpse will be left.’
But the incoming ice blade was ferocious. If he ignored it, he wouldn’t even have to wait for the trap—the blade itself would be enough to end his life.
It was a choice between two poisons.
Left with no choice, he tried to maintain his speed while simultaneously casting a Ripple Armor spell on himself.
BANG!
The Ice Blade Skill slammed into the hastily cast Ripple Armor, sending Furukawa Yu stumbling back more than two zhang. His body trembled violently from the impact, and his Fubo Skill nearly collapsed.
To his despair, the trap activated!
With a deafening BOOM, the reef exploded into countless fragments. The surrounding seawater gathered with savage force, compressing into a cyan sphere of water five zhang wide.
The sphere spun rapidly, drawing in massive amounts of water-aspected Spiritual Qi from its surroundings.
Then, the sphere detonated from its core. Like a torrent bursting through a dam, its contents erupted with ferocious power.
Countless thick lances of water shot out, blotting out everything.
Tier Two Skill: Thousand Heavy Water Spears!
Qingchi’s world seemed to go dark. The moment he saw the Magic, he knew Furukawa Yu was doomed. He pulled Changze and continued to flee.
Thousand Heavy Water Spears was a peak Tier Two Skill. When empowered by Array Patterns and Spirit Stones, such a Magic was often far more powerful than one cast personally by a cultivator.
Not to mention a Qi Refining Realm cultivator, even a Foundation Establishment expert would be unable to withstand it.
"Such immense power..."
Furukawa Yu saw the endless barrage of water spears hurtling toward him. He felt a sudden chill, and before he could even register pain, his consciousness faded to black.
In the aftermath of the Magic, the seabed was a wasteland, as if a tornado had torn through it.
Sand, gravel, shredded seaweed, and the corpses of fish and shrimp caught in the blast littered the area.
Zhao Lin had retreated the moment he launched his Ice Blade Skill, but even so, the immense force of the blast had thrown him back more than ten zhang.
Steadying himself, he formed a Celestial Secret Seal with his hand—the prearranged signal for Tao Yan.
"Brother Zhao, did you succeed?"
In less than ten breaths, Tao Yan arrived as promised.
He had been hiding not far from the reef. Upon hearing the explosion, he knew the trap had been sprung and that Zhao Lin’s plan was a success. He immediately swam over to find him.
Zhao Lin was quite gratified. "You’re a man of your word, Fellow Daoist Tao!" he said. "That’s one down, two to go. What do you say? Dare to take them on with me?"
Tao Yan’s spirits soared. "Good! Let’s cut down those two bastards!"
Zhao Lin nodded. He sent out an ultrasonic probe and discovered that the two Earth Dark Sect cultivators had already retreated to the periphery of the shoals.
"Furukawa... is dead?"
Changze glanced back, his heart still pounding with fear, and spoke in a daze.
Qingchi said nothing. His mind was already set on retreating.
He had thought victory was assured, but they had walked right into an ambush and been thoroughly played.
’I don’t know how strong Zhao Lin actually is, but his schemes are ruthless. It’s obvious this trap was prepared for us.’
"It’s not safe here. Let’s get out of the shoals before we talk," Qingchi said in a low voice, leading Changze away.
Just then, the pair sensed figures rapidly approaching. They both started in alarm. "They’re coming!"
