The NO.1 Food Stall in the Wasteland

Chapter 215: This Is Exactly the Effect He Wanted

Chapter 215: Chapter 215: This Is Exactly the Effect He Wanted

Since Jin San’s departure, the three had mostly just chatted on their Communication Devices. Seeing each other again, they were still as friendly as ever, with no awkwardness at all.

Regarding Xue Can kicking Jin San out of the Gale Mercenary Corps, both Jiang Hua and Liu Wei felt he was just using it as an excuse to act.

Nobody’s perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Jin San had made some in the past, but Brother Wu, the one who’d been wronged, didn’t even hold it against him. Yet it was Xue Can who insisted on being petty about it.

"You have no idea. Xue Can is getting more and more out of line." After a few drinks, Jiang Hua’s tongue loosened. "You know that big government contract the corps took on a while ago? Well, just yesterday, Xue Can took it upon himself to pull us out of it!"

Liu Wei couldn’t help but curse, "Son of a bitch! If we’d done that job, forget how much money we would have made, we would have at least made a name for ourselves with the government! It would have made it easier to get other contracts in the future. It was such a great opportunity, and he just threw it away, completely ignoring our objections. He’s a real piece of shit!"

"He really turned it down?" Jin San was shocked. "No way. That’s the kind of opportunity countless Mercenary Corps would kill for!"

"Exactly. We don’t know what’s gotten into him. He hasn’t been at the base at all for the past couple of days, and we have no idea what he’s up to."

"Did he do anything unusual before he turned down the contract?" Jin San asked.

Liu Wei and Jiang Hua thought for a moment, then both shook their heads. "Who knows? It’s not like we’re with him twenty-four seven."

"Could it be... he got into a fight with Lei Li? After all, the Lei family was the one who pulled the strings to get us this opportunity in the first place."

Liu Wei grunted in agreement. "That’s possible. Xue Can is a real piece of shit. What’s not to like about Miss Lei? She’s beautiful, her Superpower Level is high, and she’s completely devoted to him. But that guy? He just refuses to give her the time of day."

"He’s just playing virtuous. How else could he get Lei Li so hooked she can’t stop thinking about him? The colder he acts toward her, the more she can’t let go," Jiang Hua sneered. "I just wonder if he’s finally overplayed his hand this time."

Jin San almost laughed out loud.

’Yes, yes, yes. This is exactly the effect I was going for.’

’Looks like leaking that information to Lei Li wasn’t for nothing. The results are already plain to see.’

"Ah, let’s stop talking about this frustrating stuff. Come on, drink up." Jin San poured them both more alcohol and called over two girls to keep them company.

Liu Wei and Jiang Hua’s pay at the Gale Mercenary Corps was in the lowest bracket. When they came to Gold Street, they could usually only afford to eat and drink a little. They couldn’t bring themselves to pay for girls—it was too expensive. Ordering a few more bottles of liquor was a better deal.

But since Jin San was footing the bill, they finally got to indulge.

With his arm around one of the girls and dizzy from all the drinks, Jiang Hua suddenly started asking about what Jin San was up to these days.

"Jin San, where are you working these days? You’re being so generous, don’t tell me you’ve struck it rich?"

Jin San waved his hand dismissively. "Struck it rich? Nah, I’m just getting by."

He had the look of someone who didn’t want to say more.

Liu Wei and Jiang Hua weren’t the sharpest guys to begin with, so when Jin San gave them a vague answer, they didn’t press the issue.

On his way to the restroom, Jin San ran into Lei Li again.

"What a coincidence. What brings Miss Lei here today?"

This wasn’t the club Lei Li usually frequented. It was a less upscale establishment, and its clientele was a motley crew.

But the prices were more affordable, which was why it was a regular haunt for Jiang Hua and his friends.

Lei Li’s eyes were hazy with drink. Leaning against a male model, she shot Jin San a sideways glance, her crimson lips parting to say, "None of your fucking business."

’Does he really think I couldn’t tell he leaked that information to me on purpose?’

’I just can’t be bothered to deal with it.’

’Besides, half of what he said was true. Otherwise, I would’ve taught him a lesson long ago.’

But that didn’t mean she had to like him.

Jin San grinned. "Sister Li, no need to be a stranger. It’s just one clueless man. Why let it get to you?"

"Say that again and see if I don’t clock you."

"Alright, alright, I’ll shut my mouth, I’ll shut my mouth." As he spoke, Jin San took two steps closer to her. "Sister Li, I heard Xue Can turned down that government mission. Is that true?"

"Jin San, you have a death wish, don’t you?!"

Lei Li raised her hand to slap him. This was the very thing she was upset about, and here was Jin San, recklessly prodding her about it. He was asking for it.

Jin San was only a Second-level Superpower User; he was no match for Lei Li at all.

Even though he had anticipated her reaction, he still couldn’t dodge in time. The slap from Lei Li made his head ring.

’Fuck!’

’That crazy bitch! She didn’t hold back at all. Any harder and she would’ve slapped my brains out.’

Jin San clutched his swelling face and retreated two steps.

"Sister Li, I just feel bad for you. Xue Can is such a piece of crap."

Originally, Jin San hadn’t wanted to be so direct in his provocations, fearing Lei Li would resort to violence at the slightest disagreement.

But now that he’d already taken a slap, what the hell was there to be afraid of? If he was going to provoke her, he might as well go all in.

"You’re completely devoted to him, but how does he treat you? You worked so hard to get him that opportunity, and he threw it away without a second thought, without any consideration for your feelings."

Jin San started backing away as he spoke. "Sister Li, there are plenty of other fish in the sea! Xue Can doesn’t deserve you. Just find someone new! I think this kid next to you looks pretty good."

By the time he finished, Jin San had already vanished. Lei Li couldn’t be bothered to chase him, but the frustration simmering in her heart only intensified.

’Yes, there are plenty of men in the world, but there’s only one Xue Can. I just can’t give up until he’s mine.’

When Jin San returned to his table, Liu Wei and Jiang Hua were gone. He figured they’d gone for some "in-depth discussion" with the girls.

That was fine by him; he didn’t want to stick around anyway, lest Lei Li track him down and land a few more punches.

After sending them a message on his Communication Device saying he was heading home, Jin San immediately bolted, terrified that Lei Li would catch him if he delayed even a second.

As he was leaving the club, he carelessly bumped shoulders with a passerby.

"My bad," the person apologized first. But Jin San, in a hurry to leave, didn’t even glance at him and just kept going.

It wasn’t until he got home that Jin San realized his wallet had been stolen.

"Son of a bitch! What kind of audacious bastard dares to steal from me? They must have a death wish!" Jin San roared. It wasn’t that he was heartbroken over the wallet, but the humiliation of having something stolen from him was unbearable.

As for the thief, Jin San’s mind immediately went to the man who had bumped into him at the club entrance. It had to be him.

"Fuck!" Jin San ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He had no idea what the guy looked like, so there was no way to find him.

But the situation turned around quickly. In less than two hours, Boss Jin’s assistant came to inform him that they had found the man who stole his wallet.

"Break both of his hands," Jin San said, taking the wallet back from the assistant. "Teach him a lesson he won’t forget, so he doesn’t go around stealing from people anymore."

The assistant nodded. "Got it."

...

That night, Shen Lu slept fitfully. When they awoke early the next morning, they discovered the wind was blowing outside.

It wasn’t a strong wind, but it still made a noise as it whistled past the sheet metal.

Breakfast was sandwiches and milk. Little Mantis had made a total of three kinds: pork floss with ham and cheese, bacon and fried egg, and tuna with corn.
