Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 651: Students

Chapter 651: Chapter 651: Students

Lynn packed her things and strapped her baby to her chest. After saying her goodbyes, she left the medical tent, loaded down with bags.

Inside the tent, the pregnant women were anxious. They were all afraid they wouldn’t find suitable work after their postpartum recovery. The widows among them also worried they wouldn’t be able to support their children alone.

"If you really can’t manage, just find a man to partner up with. There must be millions of single men in this base. At a time like this, you can’t be picky. As long as he’s able-bodied, doesn’t hit you, doesn’t have a temper, and isn’t lazy, it’s fine."

"It’s not like we can’t survive without a man. Besides, the base has a women’s support department. Let me tell you, you must not find someone to partner up with just to lighten your load. You have no idea what that person has been through. If it’s hard, it’s hard. I’m not finding a man, anyway. Who knows if you’re getting a reliable shoulder to lean on, or just inviting hell into your life."

"It’s not that scary. Don’t frighten everyone. Let me tell you, women shouldn’t be so headstrong. Having someone to rely on, isn’t that a good thing?"

"We’re not missing arms or legs, why should we rely on someone else? You gave birth to a daughter. If you bring home a pervert, let’s see where you’ll go to cry then."

"For the children’s sake, don’t just randomly find them a new father. He won’t be their real dad, so how could he treat them with all his heart?"

"Don’t assume everyone is that bad. After my parents divorced, my dad remarried, and my stepmom was great to me. My mom found a stepfather, and he treated me like his own child. It all depends on the person."

"Times are different now. This is the apocalypse. Everyone is just focused on feeding themselves. Who wants to be a huge sucker and raise someone else’s kid? Don’t be naive."

...

Inside the tent, a heated debate about raising children had broken out. Evelyn Ford listened for a while before picking up her medical kit and leaving.

Outside the tent, Yolanda Lawrence and two others stood waiting. They gathered daily to discuss the situation in the tents, and if any issues arose, Evelyn Ford would help them find a solution.

Just then, Dr. Turner arrived. When he learned that Evelyn Ford had just delivered Iris Miller’s baby, he offered to take over her duties for the afternoon.

Evelyn Ford still had a class to teach, so after a brief chat, she left.

Arriving at the classroom, she found that all the students had gathered. Evelyn Ford had already given up on teaching some of the more delinquent students.

The base was a society in itself, not an ivory tower. Those who were ignorant and refused to learn would eventually be weeded out.

"Ms. Ford, you’re late today."

Evelyn Ford nodded. "My apologies. I was delivering a baby this morning and just rushed over from the medical tent. Today, we’re going to learn how to handle massive hemorrhaging..."

In the audience, some were whispering while others were diligently taking notes. After finishing her lecture, Evelyn Ford walked over to the students who were taking notes and carefully checked their work.

"If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can come find me anytime."

"Ms. Ford, is that really okay?"

’Who doesn’t like someone who’s hardworking and eager to improve?’ Evelyn Ford smiled. "Of course, it’s fine. I’m heading back for now. See you tomorrow."

"I don’t want to go to her class, it’s so annoying. I heard obstetrics is dirty, exhausting, and horrifying. I don’t want to learn how to deliver babies at all."

In a corner at the back, a few girls were gathered together, complaining that Evelyn Ford’s class was dull and boring.

Evelyn Ford, who was about to step out of the classroom, pulled her foot back. She walked over to them with her medical kit, looking at these ignorant fools with pity.

"Students who don’t want to learn how to deliver babies, raise your hand." After Evelyn Ford spoke, not one of the two hundred people dared to raise their hand. Complaining was one thing, but they still had enough sense not to offend Evelyn Ford. After all, she wasn’t just a doctor; she was also their instructor.

"I’ll say it again: raise your hand if you don’t want to learn this. What, you don’t even have the guts to raise your hand? Then how come you were all so energetic running your mouths just now?"

The few people in front of Evelyn Ford turned pale with fear. They hadn’t expected her to hear what they said, much less that she would turn back and make them declare their stance by raising their hands.

A few male students raised their hands. Seeing someone take the lead, the others were no longer afraid and raised their right hands one after another.

"How could you guys do this? Ms. Ford comes all this way every day to teach you. It’s bad enough that you don’t pay attention in class, but you also..."

Evelyn Ford raised a hand, signaling for the girl who had spoken up for her to be quiet.

"Jean Wallace."

"I’m here." The girl from before stepped forward, looking at Evelyn Ford with concern.

"Write down a list of the students who want to learn and give it to me. I’ll apply to the base to arrange a new classroom for you. From now on, my teaching hours will be adjusted to one to three in the afternoon—one hour of theory, one hour of practical training."

Jean Wallace nodded, wrote down the names of the students who hadn’t raised their hands, and gave the list to Evelyn Ford. "Ms. Ford, there are 43 in total."

"More than I expected." Evelyn Ford smiled.

"You can put your hands down. For those students who don’t want to learn, you don’t have to attend my class anymore. I will make it clear to the base administration. Class dismissed."

After saying this, Evelyn Ford called Jean Wallace outside and appointed her as the class monitor. She told her to bring the others here at one o’clock tomorrow afternoon to wait for her, and she would take them to the new classroom.

"Ms. Ford, wait a minute. You have no right to stop us from attending class." A male student stepped forward, looking at Evelyn Ford with a serious expression.

"We were chosen by the base to become doctors in the future. We should be learning everything. Isn’t it wrong for you to unilaterally expel us like this? Even though we aren’t interested in delivering babies, we still have the right to learn how."

"Not interested? Then what’s the point of learning? So you can sit there and laugh at how undignified a woman looks while giving birth? Or complain that it’s dirty? If you think like that, I suggest you don’t become doctors. Go dig fields and plant sweet potatoes instead. And you, if your mother hadn’t given birth to you, you’d be nothing but a lump of flesh. This is my classroom. What I say is the rule. I have the right to make any decision, including returning students I don’t like." Evelyn Ford’s voice was cold, and as her gaze swept across the room, many students were too scared to look up and meet her eyes.

The male student wanted to say more, but he was stopped by an administrator who had just rushed over.

"We had to ask many times before Dr. Ford was willing to come and teach you about obstetrics. Listen up, everyone. This is the base. We selected you to come here and learn, not to fool around, wait to die, complain about the conditions, complain about the teachers, and look down on patients."

The administrator had a gun tucked into his belt. They were soldiers, and they wouldn’t tolerate ignorant people acting out of line here.

"If you don’t want to learn, there are hundreds more waiting in line behind you."

"This is your first warning. If there’s a second time, all the troublemakers will be sent to the mines."

The administrator’s words scared many of the more timid students so much that their legs went weak and their faces turned pale.

"Ms. Ford, we were wrong! We’ll definitely study hard from now on."

"Ms. Ford, I’m sorry." Even the male student who had just claimed she had no right to do this quickly lowered his head and admitted his mistake.

’People... they really only get nervous and scared when their own interests are at stake.’
