Chapter 676: Chapter 676: Resignation
Quincy shook his head. "We don’t have any adult clothes in stock right now. And shoes are hard to make. Everyone wears straw sandals these days. Where would we even get the fabric to make shoes?"
"Sir, can I get clothes custom-made here? I’ll pay you in ration tickets. My husband has nothing to wear. The jacket he has is covered in patches."
"Of course. What size does he wear? Short sleeves or long sleeves? A jacket or an undershirt?" ’That huge pile of scrap fabric in my storage space can finally be put to use. They get clothes, and we get business. It’s a win-win.’
"A long-sleeved undershirt. He wears an extra-large. It would be best if it had a collar to cover his neck so he doesn’t get a sunburn and start peeling."
Quincy gave her an OK sign. "Come pick it up the day after tomorrow. Any preference for the fabric color?"
"A light color, please. It’ll be cooler."
"Light gray it is then."
After that, Quincy took several more custom orders. On their very first day, the entire stock of clothing they’d prepared over the past few days sold out. His earlier anxiety was clearly for nothing.
"I never knew I had such a talent for business! In peacetime, I’d have been a billionaire for sure."
Wyatt Vaughn silently rolled his eyes. "Don’t get so cocky. Every new business is packed on opening day. The crowds will die down in a few days. Anyway, it’s about that time. Let’s close up. You go get the kids, and I’ll make dinner."
"Got it."
Quincy jogged all the way to the local school. The dismissal bell rang just as he walked through the gates. The school was tiny, with only two floors. Zoe’s classroom was on the first floor, and Annie’s was on the second.
He found the two kids, took one by each hand, and led them home.
"Did you have fun at school today?"
"It was fun."
"Anything interesting happen that you two want to share with me?"
Zoe answered excitedly, "Yes! The classmate sitting next to me peed his pants! Then he wouldn’t stop crying, so the teacher sent him home."
Quincy patted Zoe’s head. "Your classmate is still young. Little kids get anxious and scared when they’re away from their parents, so wetting their pants is perfectly normal. You can’t make fun of people for it, understand?"
Zoe pouted. "But I don’t wet my pants! And he’s a year older than me."
"You’re doing great, but everyone is different. You’ve always been healthy—never sick, never beaten, never starved or left in the cold. If that little boy has suffered hardship in the past, it might have led to malnutrition. If that’s the case, he can’t control wetting his pants, you see? Even adults can have accidents when they’re sick. And remember, we have to respect others if we want them to respect us."
Zoe nodded. "I understand. I won’t laugh at him anymore."
Quincy nodded, pleased, then turned to Annie. "Annie, did anything interesting happen with you today?"
Annie shook his head. "No."
"Are your classmates nice? Is there anyone you don’t like?"
Annie shook his head again. "No, they’re all pretty nice."
Seeing his calm, self-possessed expression, Quincy’s heart was put at ease.
"Annie, what do you want to be when you grow up? Yesterday, Zoe told me she wants to be a beggar—go out with a bowl every day and ask for food. I was so mad I barely slept a wink last night."
Watching Zoe’s skipping figure ahead of them, the corner of Annie’s mouth twitched. ’A beggar? An answer so shocking it could startle heaven and make the Ghost Gods weep... that was definitely something Zoe would say.’
"I want to be a doctor like Aunt Ford. And I want to be as capable as Mr. Kendrick."
"What about you, kiddo? Don’t you want to be like me and open a shop?"
Annie shook his head. "I’m not cut out for business."
’He’s surprisingly self-aware,’ Quincy thought with a smile, patting the boy’s shoulder twice.
"Then you just have to work hard. As long as you do, you can become a doctor like Evelyn Ford and a great expert like Ronan Kendrick."
Annie nodded firmly. "I will. I’ll work hard."
---
Quincy’s clothing store did better and better. In just one week, he had already collected a large box full of various tickets. These tickets could be taken to the base to be exchanged for all sorts of supplies. Once the base started trading in precious metals, they could even be exchanged for gold and silver.
Quincy went to the base’s shopping center and traded for a number of trinkets, bringing back a gift for everyone. Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick each received a sachet made by the logistics department. The dried flowers inside were picked from the plains. The sachets had a calming effect and were quite popular on the base.
Evelyn was quite fond of the sachet. "I’m surprised the base’s industries have developed to this point. It’s really impressive. I heard they’re going to start planting cotton soon. I bet everyone will have new clothes and shoes by next year."
"The base may preach equality and shared progress, but a wealth gap has still appeared," Ethan Dawson couldn’t help but say.
"A wealth gap has always existed, from ancient times to today. At least now, everyone has food to eat and a place to live. The disabled, the elderly, and orphans are all taken care of by the base. People who can work with their hands are given crafts to make a living. The base is even providing treatment for those who’ve gone mad. All in all, things are heading in a good direction."
Evelyn Ford’s teaching term at the school had come to an end. She decided to submit her resignation to the administration, intending to resign from her hospital post at the same time.
Everyone supported her decision, especially Ronan Kendrick. If Evelyn didn’t have to go to work, she would have more time to spend with him. He had been in a great mood for the past few days, a smile never leaving his lips.
Evelyn Ford went to the classroom and taught her students one last lesson. Only after class was over did she formally say her goodbyes.
The students were shocked to learn that Evelyn Ford was resigning, and even leaving her position at the hospital. Some of the girls started crying on the spot.
"Ms. Ford, I’ll miss you."
"I live in the base’s Courtyard District, Area A. You can all come find me if you need anything." Evelyn opened her handbag and took out some pens.
’This was my first time as a teacher. Though I wasn’t the best, I fulfilled my six-month contract with the base. But before I go, I want to leave these students with something.’
"Two pens for each of you. It’s my farewell gift. Jean Wallace, please help me pass them out."
"Ms. Ford, can’t you at least keep working at the hospital? If you leave, it’s like we’ve lost our anchor. I’m suddenly really scared."
"Dr. Turner will be teaching you for another six months. He has much more clinical experience than I do, so you’ll be able to learn a lot more from him. I’m only resigning, not leaving the base. You can all still come to me with any questions. The doctors at the hospital are all very good, so don’t worry. And remember, even though we’re doctors, we aren’t punching bags. If you’re wronged, you don’t have to tolerate it."
Evelyn Ford gave everyone a deep bow. "Goodbye, students. I wish you success in your studies and all the best in your futures."
After leaving the classroom, Evelyn went to the hospital. Once she had completed the resignation process, Evelyn invited Dr. Turner, Yolanda Lawrence, Jane Warren, and Nina York to her home for a meal.
