Chapter 715: Chapter 715: Mission Accomplished
Ronan Kendrick took the clothes and shoes he had packed over to Ethan Dawson and the others. Meanwhile, Evelyn Ford was in their tent arranging the mattress and bedding. They would be spending the night outside, so she had to make sure the tent was sturdy enough to withstand any fierce winds that might blow it down.
Lying in the tent, Evelyn Ford rested her head on her hands, contemplating which mountain to explore tomorrow. Their tent was on the very edge of the encampment, yet she could clearly hear people talking and walking by. And on top of that, there was the deafening sound of snoring.
It was already eleven at night, and everyone else had fallen asleep. Evelyn Ford took out her phone, admiring the photos and videos she’d taken over the past few days. She was so engrossed that she didn’t even notice when Ronan Kendrick returned.
"Not sleepy yet?" freⅇ
"I was waiting for you. Did you give them the stuff?"
"Yeah, I did."
Evelyn Ford patted the space beside her, motioning for Ronan Kendrick to lie down. The two of them leaned against each other, looking at the photos Evelyn had taken of everyone.
By eleven-thirty, the sounds of snoring and croaking frogs filled the air. Evelyn Ford tossed and turned, unable to sleep. In the end, the two of them entered her space to rest. Fortunately, the three people who had been bitten by the insects were fine, and their wounds showed no signs of infection.
Wendy, it seemed, had stayed up all night to analyze the insects. The moment Evelyn woke up in the morning, Wendy was there with a report.
"The insects contain several types of toxins, but no infectious bacteria."
Evelyn Ford took the report and read it carefully. "Thankfully, these insects aren’t fatal. And it’s a good thing we performed the surgery right away. If the bugs had been left in the flesh for too long, the bitten area would have definitely suffered nerve necrosis. Wendy, thank you for your hard work. I’m going to go out and change the dressing for the three injured men. We need to have everyone wear rain boots and gloves today."
Wendy yawned. "I’m going back to my room to get some sleep. I’m exhausted."
"Go on." Evelyn Ford reviewed the report one more time to make sure there were no issues. She prepared a packet of medicinal herbs. ’After all, the insects carry toxins,’ she thought. ’Even if they aren’t fatal, the patients should take some medicine to purge the poison.’
At eight o’clock sharp, Evelyn Ford emerged from her space with the medicinal herbs, while Ronan Kendrick carried breakfast for the others. Just as they came out, they heard Leo Denton shouting Evelyn’s name from outside.
Evelyn quickly unzipped the tent. "What’s wrong?"
Seeing Evelyn emerge, Leo Denton breathed a sigh of relief. "Joy Ford, the three teammates who were bitten by insects last night are in trouble! The wounds are turning red, and they say it’s both itchy and painful, like something is crawling around inside."
Evelyn Ford grabbed her medical kit and immediately followed him to the tent where the injured were.
Inside the tent, the three injured men were having their arms and legs held down as they wailed in agony. Evelyn examined their wounds and confirmed that the toxins were spreading.
"Dr. Ford, there are still bugs in my leg! It’s burrowed into my bone! Dr. Ford, please give me another painkiller. It hurts too much, I can’t take it anymore."
The other two men beside him were also drenched in sweat from the pain. Evelyn Ford took out some painkillers and gave them two pills each.
"The bugs were completely removed last night. The reason your wounds are red and painful is because the toxins they carried haven’t been cleared out."
Evelyn Ford looked at Leo Denton. "Captain Denton, here is a packet of medicine. Have someone boil it for three hours. Remember, use five large bowls of clean water, just enough to submerge the packet."
Evelyn Ford put on a mask and gloves, then redressed and bandaged the patients’ wounds.
"This ointment can reduce swelling and kill the poison. Apply it every two hours. The wounds will sting a little for the next couple of days, but once the toxins are slowly expelled, they will heal." She handed three tubes of ointment to them.
"Dr. Ford, can my leg still be saved?"
These three patients were very young, in their early twenties, and their eyes were filled with anxiety and worry. If they lost a leg, they would become cripples. A cripple couldn’t possibly remain in the army. If the base abandoned them, how would they survive?
"Of course it can. The bugs have been removed. The small amount of toxin left inside can be cleared out in a few days. Don’t worry."
They still kept their brows furrowed. It seemed they didn’t really believe Evelyn’s words.
Seeing their apprehension, Evelyn said no more. Instead, she looked to Leo Denton, letting him make a statement.
Leo Denton, of course, would never abandon his teammates. Even if their legs were truly crippled, he would protect them.
"Joy Ford is a doctor. If she says your legs are fine, then they’ll be fine. Don’t let your minds wander. Rest well, cooperate with the treatment, and you’ll recover in a few days. You will always be my team members, soldiers of the base. The base has preferential treatment for its soldiers. You don’t have to worry about a thing, understand?"
Leo Denton’s words carried more weight than Evelyn’s. After he spoke, the gloom and despair in the three men’s eyes vanished.
Evelyn left with her medical kit, and Leo Denton chased after her.
"Joy Ford, about their legs..."
"Don’t worry, they’re treatable. There won’t be any lasting side effects. In ten days at most, they’ll be able to go back to work."
Leo Denton let out a sigh of relief. "That’s great."
"By the way, there are some rain boots and gloves in the supply tent. You should get them out and distribute them to everyone later."
"Alright, I’ll get on it right now."
"Is the medicine boiling?"
"It’s already on."
Evelyn made an OK sign and returned to her tent with the medical kit.
Quincy and the others were holding their bowls, ready to eat breakfast. Leo Denton called over a few people, and they carried out the rain boots and gloves that Ronan Kendrick had placed in the supply tent.
The weather was excellent today; the sun even came out. Everyone howled with excitement.
After breakfast, Leo Denton and Flynn Hansen directed everyone to put on rain boots and gloves. The day’s task was heavy, and everyone was giving it their all. Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick also led the others into the mountains.
It was hard work, but seeing the mountainsides covered in wild vegetables and mushrooms, everyone felt it was worth it.
Time flew by. In the blink of an eye, they had been at Demon’s Ridge for a month. One-third of the Water Celery in the swamp had been cleared. As for the wild boars and bison in the mountains, they had left twenty of each to continue breeding, while all the others had been collected into the space.
Many rare species had also appeared on Demon’s Ridge, such as vibrantly colored birds and peculiar-looking deer.
’It’s better to let these animals live in the mountains.’ Although there were still plenty of wild vegetables in the mountains left undug, Evelyn felt they had enough. She led everyone down the mountain to join the others in digging up Water Celery. The residents of the base were still waiting for them.
"Looks like there are no survivors left on Demon’s Ridge. We’ve been here so many days and haven’t seen cooking smoke rising from anywhere else."
"Demon’s Ridge isn’t suitable for human habitation. It’s too damp. Living in the mountains for a long time can easily lead to rheumatism. Plus, with all the wild beasts, it’s not safe."
"I wonder how things are at the base. The sun should be out there by now, right?"
...
「On the seventy-second day at Demon’s Ridge,」 all the Water Celery was harvested. They would be returning soon. To celebrate the successful completion of their mission, Flynn Hansen and Leo Denton decided to treat everyone.
Demon’s Ridge was lacking in everything except ingredients. The two leaders took their respective teammates into the mountains to hunt for treasures: mushrooms, wild vegetables, wild fruits, pheasants, wild rabbits... They returned fully laden with their haul.
