Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 723: Inheritance

Chapter 723: Chapter 723: Inheritance

Flynn Hansen was awake, but his condition was grim.

"How could this be?" Evelyn Ford was a bit stunned as she looked at the red bumps that had appeared on Flynn Hansen’s body.

"Is this chickenpox?"

"Doesn’t look like it. It might be toxins being expelled from his body. Flynn Hansen, how are you feeling?"

Flynn Hansen’s consciousness was still a bit muddled. He lay in bed, looking weakly at everyone.

"Itchy. My whole body feels awful. I want to scratch."

"Get some rope and tie up his arms and legs so he doesn’t scratch the bumps open." Evelyn Ford took out two high-potency pills and some Detoxification Pills and stuffed them into his mouth. ’As terrifying as these red bumps look, as long as he doesn’t break the skin, it shouldn’t be a major problem.’

After taking the medicine, Flynn Hansen fell into a deep sleep again.

After a grueling day, everyone was exhausted. Once she was back in her room, Evelyn Ford crashed into bed and fell asleep instantly.

’If only I could just wake up back at the base tomorrow. If only I had the ability to teleport.’ Evelyn Ford mumbled to herself before drifting off to sleep.

At six the next morning, Evelyn Ford woke up and sat staring blankly into space. Ronan Kendrick, thinking she’d had a nightmare, pulled her into his arms to comfort her.

"I didn’t even dream last night. I’m just annoyed at the thought of having to travel again. Ronan Kendrick, do you know how to fly a plane?"

Ronan Kendrick raised an eyebrow. "I can learn."

Evelyn Ford wanted to take a plane back to the base. Devil’s City was perfect for takeoff, and the flight back to the base would probably only take an hour. Landing would be easy too, since the area around the base was all desert and grassland. The only problem was that no one in their group seemed to know how to fly a plane.

Besides, the most important thing about flying is the flight path. If they accidentally flew across the border or veered south, they’d be in big trouble.

Ronan Kendrick had taught himself how to pilot a ship, so flying a plane shouldn’t be a problem. Besides, there was a manual.

Evelyn Ford looked at him with eager eyes. "Kendrick, our hopes for a quick trip home are all on you. You can do it! I believe in you."

"What’s in it for me?" He reached out and pinched Evelyn Ford’s cheek.

"Hey, don’t pinch my cheeks. When you get older, your face gets puffy."

Ronan Kendrick didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "How are you old? I can’t see it."

"You’re so sweet today."

"So, are you going to give me something?"

Evelyn Ford gave him a quick kiss. "Is that enough?"

Ronan Kendrick chuckled. "I’ll put it on your tab for now. I’ll come to collect the whole debt later."

Ronan Kendrick went off to learn how to fly the plane, and Ethan Dawson and the others went along to watch the fun. Evelyn Ford took Wendy to the lab to check on the woman. She hadn’t woken up yet, but her complexion looked a little better than yesterday. She no longer looked so lifeless.

The two eagles also knew that Evelyn Ford and Wendy had saved their master. Every time they saw the two women, they would lower their heads and let out soft, low calls. Zoe said this was their way of thanking their saviors.

At nine in the morning, the woman woke up.

Due to her long-term isolation from society, she could make sounds but couldn’t communicate normally. Her speech was slow, and she could only force out one syllable at a time with great effort. Most importantly, not even Zoe could understand the words she spoke, let alone Evelyn Ford and the others.

However, the eagles told Zoe that this was a unique language their master used to communicate with them.

Zoe communicated with the eagles, who in turn relayed the events of the past two days to the woman. Through this process, they finally learned her name and why she lived in Devil’s City.

The woman’s name was Leah, and she was only twenty-three years old.

Leah told Evelyn Ford and Wendy that she had been born in Devil’s City. When she was little, she had many family members, but as she grew up, they gradually died off. Ten years ago, she became the only person left in all of Devil’s City. She was raised by the two eagles. Because Devil’s City was a forbidden zone with a volatile climate, very few outsiders had entered over the years. Even if they did, none could ever find their home, which was how they were able to live there in peace.

But a few years ago, her body started developing various problems. At first, it was just fatigue and weakness. Then her hair and teeth began to fall out. Later, her skin started to peel, and her limbs became swollen and itchy. She knew her days were numbered because her symptoms were the same as those her family had shown before they died. She had told the two eagles to leave Devil’s City, but they refused. They continued to fly out every day to find food and water for her, and they even cleaned the filth from her body.

Evelyn Ford picked up on several important pieces of information from her words.

First, Leah’s family had lived here for many years.

Second, Leah said outsiders who entered could never find this place. This suggested they might possess some kind of ability. Ruling out superstition, Evelyn Ford thought about her own situation. ’There are definitely many things in this world that cannot be explained by science.’ Moreover, Devil’s City had radioactive minerals. People who entered might experience mental abnormalities. Even if they saw Leah’s family, they would forget upon leaving Devil’s City, just like Flynn Hansen and the others.

Third, Leah said her symptoms were the same as her family’s before they died, which meant her family had also died from poisoning by the radioactive minerals.

Fourth, Leah told them that for as long as she could remember, her family had told her she must never leave Devil’s City for all eternity. They had to protect everything here. This meant that the runes on the stone tablets in Devil’s City were related to them—the runes were their written language.

Fifth, Leah and her family all possessed the ability to communicate with animals.

Evelyn Ford thought of the hand gesture on the stone tablet. After asking about it, Leah told her that the gesture represented devotion.

It meant to devote everything, to devote one’s life.

Just as Quincy had guessed, what they were guarding was the Ghost God.

According to her, this place had been a small tribe hundreds of years ago. The tribal chief had fallen ill and died, but he came back to life just before his burial. Afterward, the chief began to worship the Ghost God, even creating a language and script to communicate with it. Because the chief had six fingers, which was considered an auspicious sign here, it represented the ability to communicate with the Ghost God.

Leah was born with six fingers, so her family all believed she could communicate with the Ghost God. But after she was born, her family members died one after another, and she became seen as a jinx. At first, she wanted to leave this place and see the outside world, but she couldn’t. She said that whenever she tried to step out of Devil’s City, a force would pull her back. She said the Ghost God worshiped by the tribe would not let her leave.

After listening to her story, Evelyn Ford and Wendy found it all incredible.

The world was a vast and strange place. If they hadn’t stumbled in here by accident, they never would have known that such a magical tribe and such a bizarre legacy could exist.

Leah wanted to go back to her stone house. She told Evelyn Ford and Wendy that she didn’t have long to live. When she died, the eagles would eat her flesh and blood. At that moment, she would be set free, and the two eagles would be freed as well.

They took her out of the space and placed her back on her straw mat. Leah lay there quietly, telling Evelyn Ford and Wendy not to bother with her anymore. The two eagles stood guard at the entrance, having already accepted their master’s plan.

Leah said the two eagles were the same age as her. Every member of the tribe had two eagle companions. When the master died, the eagles would not live on alone.
