Chapter 281: Chapter 281: Husband and Wife Reunion
"Don’t go!"
Lu Cheng subconsciously reached out to grab Jiang Moli, but his hand caught only air.
Like Jiang Peng, his hands had been injured climbing a wire fence. Each finger was thickly wrapped in gauze, making them look thick, large, and swollen. He couldn’t even make a fist, let alone bend his knuckles.
Seeing the man’s hands, Jiang Moli’s heart suddenly softened, and all her anger dissipated.
Jiang Peng walked over and pushed Qiao Wenjing aside. "Brother-in-law, my sis just got here from Rongcheng. She won’t be leaving so soon."
Only then did Lu Cheng notice Qiao Wenjing’s presence. "Doctor Qiao, what are you doing here?"
Qiao Wenjing couldn’t help but feel wronged. "I heard you’d been lying in the hospital for days with no one to look after you, so I wanted to come and help. Since Comrade Jiang is here now, I’ll head back."
Lu Cheng spoke up, "Thank you for your kindness. Since you’re already here, could you please help us get two thermoses of hot water?"
Noticing the fruit on the cabinet, he added, "And please peel two apples for us."
Hearing Lu Cheng order her around, Qiao Wenjing wasn’t angry at all. In fact, she was secretly pleased.
’This means Lu Cheng trusts me.’
She shot Jiang Moli a triumphant glance, then happily picked up the thermoses and went out.
Jiang Peng was not happy about this. "Brother-in-law, my sis is right here. Why are you asking an outsider to do things?"
"Your sister has such delicate skin. I couldn’t bear to let her do manual labor."
Qiao Wenjing, who had just stepped out of the hospital room, nearly dropped the thermoses in her hands. "..."
’So does that mean I’m thick-skinned and meant for hard work?’
Jiang Peng beamed. "You’re so thoughtful, brother-in-law."
Lu Cheng looked at him. "Where’s your common sense? Hurry up and get a stool for your sister to sit on."
"On it!"
Jiang Peng moved the stool Qiao Wenjing had been sitting on in front of Jiang Moli and dusted it off with his mummy-wrapped hands.
"Sis, have a seat."
After Jiang Moli sat down, he made an excuse about being sleepy and left the room, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
However, he didn’t go back to his own room next door to rest. Instead, he stood guard at the entrance like a door god, preventing the tactless Qiao Wenjing from going in and bothering his sister and brother-in-law.
Inside the room, Lu Cheng gazed at Jiang Moli without blinking, his deep eyes full of a tenderness that suggested he could never get enough of looking at her.
"Moli, I didn’t expect you to come. My injuries aren’t serious, so don’t worry."
Looking at the man’s obviously pale and gaunt face, Jiang Moli’s heart filled with tenderness, but her words were teasing.
"Xiao Peng called and said you were on your last legs, telling me to rush over to see you one last time."
"That kid!"
On the surface, he was feigning annoyance, but inside, he was overjoyed.
’This little brother-in-law... he’s a keeper.’
"Moli, I’m sorry for making you worry."
Jiang Moli replied, "I wasn’t too worried, just busy planning. I was thinking, if you really kicked the bucket, should it be a burial or cremation? Which cemetery should we use? And what kind of man should I find for my second marriage..."
Lu Cheng cut her off with a cold snort. "Don’t even think about it. It’s a waste of time. I plan on living a long life."
Jiang Moli just looked at him without saying a word.
Her stare made him feel uneasy. "Do I look too ugly? I haven’t had a chance to shave in a while, and my hair’s probably gotten long..."
Jiang Moli cut him off. "I’m just glad you’re okay."
As soon as she got Jiang Peng’s call, Jiang Moli had immediately bought a train ticket and come over.
In the original book, Lu Cheng had successfully completed his mission and was even promoted to commander of the independent regiment.
But her arrival and intervention had changed the fates of many people.
Even though she knew she would have to leave this place—and this man—before long.
But she still wanted him to live a good life, a life as brilliant as the midday sun, just like in the original book.
Unable to stand the sight of his scruffy face any longer, Jiang Moli said, "Let me shave you."
"Okay!"
Lu Cheng couldn’t have been happier. He wished he had a big tail he could wag for her.
The soap and razor were readily available. Jiang Moli had shaved him a couple of times before when she visited him in Menghai, so she was quite skilled at it.
Outside the room.
Qiao Wenjing returned with the hot water, only to be blocked at the door by Jiang Peng. "Give me the thermoses. You can go now."
Qiao Wenjing glared at him. "My bag is still in there!"
Jiang Peng grinned, pointing to the floor with his bear-paw-like hands. "Right here. I brought it out for you. No need to thank me."
Qiao Wenjing picked her bag up off the floor, dusted it off, and walked away indignantly.
Jiang Peng snorted at her retreating back. ’Daring to have designs on my sister’s man. The fact that I didn’t punch you just shows how good my temper is!’
A short while later, Wei Huihui arrived, carrying a container of lean-pork congee from the cafeteria to deliver to Lu Cheng. Unsurprisingly, she was also stopped by Jiang Peng.
"Soldier Jiang, why are you blocking me?"
Jiang Peng looked at the aluminum lunch box in her hand. "What’s that you’ve got?"
"This is the food the senior officer specially ordered for Camp Commander Lu."
Jiang Peng said, "Just give it to me."
Wei Huihui, of course, refused.
The lean-pork and rice congee in the lunch box was a privilege reserved for someone of Lu Cheng’s rank. If Jiang Peng ate it, how would she explain herself?
"Soldier Jiang, please step aside. Don’t interfere with my duties!"
"How am I interfering? Just give me the food, and I’ll take it inside for you."
Back in the room, Jiang Moli looked at the clean-shaven man and found him much more pleasing to the eye.
Hearing the faint sound of arguing outside, she put down the razor and went to open the door.
"What’s all the noise about?"
Gazing at Jiang Moli, with her almond-shaped eyes and rosy cheeks, the words caught in Wei Huihui’s throat.
Jiang Peng pointed at Wei Huihui and complained, "This nurse is so stubborn. I told her to give me the food so I could take it in for her, but she insisted on going in herself."
Wei Huihui was so angry she was about to curse him out, but Jiang Moli interrupted, "Is that dinner? Please, bring it in."
Wei Huihui followed Jiang Moli into the room. Seeing that Lu Cheng was awake, she quickly asked about his condition, thinking to herself that his family member’s visit had really worked wonders; he woke up as soon as she arrived.
As she thought this, she noticed Qiao Wenjing was nowhere to be seen and couldn’t help but wonder.
"Camp Commander Lu, where’s your family member?"
Lu Cheng gestured toward Jiang Moli with his chin. "Isn’t she right here?"
"Looking for me?" Meeting Jiang Moli’s faintly smiling face, Wei Huihui was stunned. "You’re Camp Commander Lu’s wife? Then Comrade Qiao is..."
"She just loves to help people," Jiang Moli said. "In the future, if the hospital has any patients who need looking after, you can ask her."
As soon as she left the room, Wei Huihui immediately ran back to the nurses’ station to share the gossip with her colleagues.
"That Comrade Qiao isn’t Camp Commander Lu’s family after all! The real wife is in his room right now!"
"Is Camp Commander Lu’s wife pretty?"
Recalling Jiang Moli’s flower-like beauty, Wei Huihui had to admit, "She’s gorgeous."
Back in the room, Jiang Moli scalded a spoon with boiling water. Just as she picked up the lunch box to feed Lu Cheng, he asked her a question.
"Have you eaten?"
Jiang Moli replied, "I ate something on the dining car. I’m not hungry yet."
Hearing this, Lu Cheng relaxed. Then he added, "Give some of the congee to Xiao Peng. He’s had a tough time lately too."
The aroma of the lean-pork and rice congee had already made Jiang Peng’s mouth water. Hearing this, he grinned from ear to ear.
"My brother-in-law is the best! Thanks, brother-in-law!"
Lu Cheng soon regretted it.
Like him, Jiang Peng’s hands were wrapped in gauze, and he couldn’t hold a spoon.
For every spoonful she fed him, she had to feed one to Jiang Peng.
Lu Cheng: Not happy.
