Chapter 290: Chapter 290: The Bed Collapsed Yet Again
Grudges between a mother and daughter never last overnight. After the reunion dinner, the rift between Fan Wenfang and Lu Tingting had all but disappeared.
Back at home, Fan Wenfang found some cold medicine for Lu Tingting to take.
"Take some of this as a precaution. The New Year is almost here; we can’t have you catching a cold."
Lu Tingting refused. "I already took some."
Fan Wenfang thought she was just being defiant and said, a little annoyed, "When did you take it?"
"During dinner. Third Aunt had me take it. You can ask her if you don’t believe me."
Seeing how adamant she was, Fan Wenfang believed her.
Back in their room, as they were getting ready to rest, Lu Yuan brought up Jiang Moli. "It seems to me that wife of Third Brother’s is pretty capable. Not as terrible as you said."
Fan Wenfang shot her husband a look. "How long have you even known her? Do you really know her at all? How can you judge whether she’s good or bad?"
Lu Yuan said, "I may not know our sister-in-law well, but you can tell a lot from how she acts and speaks. She and Tingting didn’t use to get along, but now she has Tingting listening to her. That shows she has a way with people."
"And what she said about grades during dinner made a lot of sense. All five fingers aren’t the same length. Tingting just isn’t the scholarly type. We really don’t need to be so hard on her in the future."
Fan Wenfang couldn’t help but retort, "It’s easy for her to say that now. Once she has a kid of her own, she’ll be singing a different tune."
In saying this, it wasn’t that Fan Wenfang was actually dissatisfied with Jiang Moli.
On the contrary, in her heart, she was quite grateful to her.
After all, what Jiang Moli had said during dinner had helped her and her daughter save some face.
But that didn’t stop her from disagreeing with Jiang Moli’s perspective.
What mother doesn’t want her children to be successful?
Especially during the holidays, everywhere you went, acquaintances and strangers alike, the first thing they would ask was about your child’s grades.
If the child’s grades were good, the parents were proud. If their grades were poor, the parents lost face too.
She refused to believe that Jiang Moli could remain so composed if she were in her shoes.
Setting aside the matter of the children, Fan Wenfang probed her husband about his job transfer:
"Is there any chance you’ll be transferred back next year?"
Lu Yuan glanced at her. "You ask this every year. Don’t you ever get tired of it?"
Fan Wenfang retorted irritably, "If you’re so tired of me asking, then get yourself transferred back, and I’ll stop! Second Brother and his wife have been pulling strings for the last two years; he might get transferred back any day now. But not you! Twenty years in Black Province! You’ve been holed up there longer than a thousand-year-old turtle!"
The more she spoke, the angrier Fan Wenfang got. She grabbed a pillowcase and started swatting Lu Yuan with it.
"After all these years married to you, I’ve been living like a widow! Do you really have to wait until I’m an old woman before you’re willing to come back?"
Lu Yuan let her hit him, not even blinking an eye.
Suddenly, he raised a hand, grabbed the pillowcase, and gave it a sharp tug. Caught off guard, Fan Wenfang tumbled into his arms.
He wrapped both arms around her waist, his dark gaze landing on her still-beautiful face. His voice held a hint of roguish teasing.
"Miss me?"
Without another word, he lowered his head and captured her lips.
A soft moan echoed in the room.
「Twenty minutes later.」
Lu Yuan held his wife, whispering, "Wenfang, I know you’ve had it rough all these years. But Dad still hasn’t retired. Even if I get transferred, it’ll just be to some other place."
"Besides, I’ve been a regimental commander for so many years. It would be a huge loss to leave now."
Fan Wenfang’s head shot up. "What do you mean? Are you trying to become a division commander? How long would that take?"
Lu Yuan looked at her. "Don’t you want to be a division commander’s wife?"
Fan Wenfang fell silent.
’What woman wouldn’t want to be a division commander’s wife? But it wasn’t a position one could attain so easily.’
But Lu Yuan’s next words made Fan Wenfang’s heart pound in her chest.
"The higher-ups have spoken with me. They’re planning to send me to the National Defense University for advanced studies next year."
The military had a principle of "training before promotion." Officers who returned to their units after advanced studies were generally promoted.
Now, when Fan Wenfang looked at her husband, all traces of resentment were gone, replaced by only admiration and joy.
"Are you confident?"
Lu Yuan looked down at her. "What do you think?"
Fan Wenfang sat up and straightened his collar. "If you ask me, you’ve got this! After your leave is over, you just go and focus on what you need to do. I’ll take care of everything at home and make sure not to cause you any trouble."
Lu Yuan leaned against the headboard and smiled. "With a wife like you, what more could a husband ask for?"
Fan Wenfang shot him a playful glare. "Oh, stop with the flattery. Alright, let’s get some sleep."
...
Lu Cheng was half-reclined against the headboard, his hand lifting the hem of his shirt to his chest, revealing a flat, leanly muscled stomach.
Jiang Moli was kneeling on his lap, her middle finger dabbing scar-removal cream onto the scar on his ribs.
"Does the wound still hurt?"
Jiang Moli asked as she rubbed the scar in small circles with the pad of her finger to help the ointment absorb into the skin.
Lu Cheng grabbed her hand and moved it lower. "Forget the scar. Take care of this."
"I’m going to wash my hands first."
"No need. It’s all herbal ingredients, it’s harmless."
"I don’t like the smell," Jiang Moli said.
Lu Cheng was speechless.
The moment Jiang Moli returned to the room after washing her hands, Lu Cheng immediately locked the door, scooped her up into his arms, and carried her toward the bed, kissing her all the while.
After some foreplay, Jiang Moli stopped him. "I want to be on top."
Lu Cheng chuckled indulgently. "Alright."
The bed began to rock gently.
After a moment, Lu Cheng chuckled at her. "You’re so gentle, there’s no force behind it. Why don’t you let me take over?"
Jiang Moli huffed playfully. "You’ll break the bed."
Lu Cheng didn’t believe it for a second. It was a new bed they had bought when they got married, and they’d only been sleeping on it for half a year. How could it possibly collapse?
"It won’t collapse. And even if it does, I’ll be here to cushion your fall."
The words had barely left his mouth when there was a deafening CRASH.
The bed collapsed!
...
Lu Cheng and Lu Deyao lifted a corner of the bed while Ma Hongmei slid a wooden stool of roughly the same height underneath to serve as a temporary leg, allowing Lu Cheng and Jiang Moli to make do for the night.
Holding the bed leg, which had snapped in two, An Hui couldn’t help but grumble, "That last craftsman was so unreliable. He charged me fifteen yuan to fix this leg, and look how long it lasted before collapsing again!"
Hearing this, Lu Cheng was baffled. "This bed has collapsed before? But it’s a new bed, how could it collapse?"
When he learned that it was Lu Tingting who had broken her own bed, ruining his fun, Lu Cheng felt like dragging her over for a spanking.
"ACHOO! ACHOO!"
After a series of sneezes, Lu Tingting rubbed her nose, wondering if she was really coming down with a cold. She quickly got out of bed, went to the living room, and took three more cold medicine tablets.
With the broken leg propped up by the wooden stool, the bed was just about usable for a night’s sleep, but anything else was definitely out of the question.
"First thing tomorrow morning, we’re going to buy a new bed."
Hearing the unsatisfied desire in his voice, Jiang Moli turned her small, porcelain-white face toward him, blinking her watery almond eyes as she asked:
"How sturdy do you think the legs on the desk are?"
