Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Lucky Money
Jiang Moli lifted the man’s chin and said with a smile, "You resting your head on my chest like this... you’re like a big baby. It makes my motherly instincts kick in. I’m tempted to pull one out and let you have a little taste."
Lu Cheng choked, then immediately sat bolt upright. His burning gaze fixed on her. "You want to be a mom? Then let’s make one right now!"
With that, he started pulling at her long johns.
Jiang Moli pressed down on his large hand. "Making one ourselves is so much trouble. Why don’t you call me ’Mom’ once, and I’ll tell you a secret."
Lu Cheng grabbed her hand and nipped it. "You little rascal. Trying to get one over on me."
The bite actually hurt a little, and Jiang Moli snatched her hand back. "Fine, don’t say it. I’m going to sleep. You get the lights."
She burrowed into the blankets, getting ready to sleep.
Lu Cheng also lay down on his side, propping his head on one hand. His deep eyes watched her quietly.
"What’s this secret you haven’t told me?"
"Call me ’Mom,’ and I’ll tell you."
In the end, curiosity won out over principle. Lu Cheng awkwardly called out, "Mom."
Jiang Moli extended a pale, slender finger from under the blankets and beckoned to him.
Lu Cheng obediently leaned closer.
Jiang Moli cupped a hand to his ear and whispered, "You’re not my biological son~"
Lu Cheng was speechless.
The next second, he rolled over and pinned her underneath him, his eyes dark. "In that case, I’ll just have to give you a biological one!"
Jiang Moli refused, "I don’t want one~"
"Still playing hard to get? We’ve been married for ages. You think I don’t know whether you want one or not?"
Jiang Moli’s reason was shattered along with the swaying mosquito net.
’Having a baby with excellent genes like his wouldn’t be so bad~’
...
On the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, they ate Tang Yuan.
By the time Jiang Moli got up and washed, the Tang Yuan were already cooked, tumbling in the steaming pot, perfectly white and round.
"Come on, Moli, you scoop first. Take as many as you want to eat."
Lu Deyao called Jiang Moli into the kitchen.
An Hui handed her a bowl. "Scoop an even number. It’s good luck."
"Okay."
The Tang Yuan were handmade, so they weren’t all the same size; some were large, and some were small.
Jiang Moli scooped two large ones and then two small ones.
She carried the Tang Yuan to the dining table, and with the very first bite, she bit down on something hard.
Spitting it out, she saw it was a Silver Ingot the size of a peanut.
"Oh my, Moli got an ingot! What a good omen! You’re sure to have great financial luck this year!"
Ma Hongmei said happily, looking at the Silver Ingot in Jiang Moli’s hand.
Lu Deyao chimed in with a smile, "Moli, not bad luck, huh."
Jiang Moli bounced the ingot in her palm. It was quite heavy, probably five or six grams.
Jiang Moli placed the Silver Ingot on the table and continued eating her Tang Yuan.
When she ate the second Tang Yuan, she bit down on something hard again. Spitting it out, she saw it was another Silver Ingot.
"Auntie Hongmei, how many Silver Ingots did you put in, in total?"
"Three."
Ma Hongmei looked at the two Silver Ingots in front of Jiang Moli, baffled. "There were only three Silver Ingots in total, and you found two of them. Your luck is just too good."
Jiang Moli grinned. "Mhm, looks like I’m going to get rich this year."
As she ate her third Tang Yuan, Jiang Moli casually spat the last Silver Ingot onto the table as if she’d done it a thousand times.
The whole family was stunned.
"Hongmei, you’re playing favorites! You gave all three ingots to Moli," Lu Deyao teased.
Ma Hongmei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "It has nothing to do with me! You all scooped your own Tang Yuan. I couldn’t see which ones had the ingots and which ones didn’t."
An Hui shot her husband a look, then comforted her, "Don’t mind him."
Lu Cheng looked proud, as if he shared in the glory. "You can only blame my Moli for having such profound fortune. Wealth just jumps right into her bowl."
If she hadn’t scooped the Tang Yuan herself, Jiang Moli would have suspected the whole family was conspiring to make her happy.
Finding all three Silver Ingots by herself... her luck was truly second to none.
...
After breakfast, Jiang Moli and Lu Cheng grabbed their New Year’s gifts and headed back to Plum Valley to pay their respects to their elders and pick up Jiang Dahai to bring him back to the city.
Just as their car was pulling out of the compound, they ran into Lu Tingting, who was also on her way out.
"My dear niece, where are you off to?"
Lu Tingting rolled her eyes at Jiang Moli, then pulled open the car door and slid into the back seat.
"Third Uncle, I’m going to the movie theater. Give me a ride."
"It’s not on the way. We’re going to the countryside. Take the bus yourself," Lu Cheng refused mercilessly.
Lu Tingting pouted. "It’s the first day of the New Year. The buses aren’t running."
"Then you can walk."
Lu Tingting threw a little tantrum. "I don’t care! If you don’t give me a ride, I’m not getting out of the car."
Lu Cheng didn’t indulge her and just started driving.
Jiang Moli turned her head to face Lu Tingting. "Movies are boring. Come to the countryside with us. If you’re a sweet-talker when you see the elders, you might even earn some lucky money."
Lu Tingting shot back, "You’ve got some nerve. You’re my elder, too. How come I haven’t seen any lucky money from you?"
"Say a couple of nice things for me to hear, and maybe I will."
"You give it first."
Lu Tingting had gotten smarter; after all, she’d been tricked so many times before.
Jiang Moli reached into her bag and rummaged around for a while before finally holding out a clenched fist in front of her.
"Here, your lucky money."
Lu Tingting stared at Jiang Moli’s hand, suspecting a trick.
Jiang Moli’s hands were small; there was no way she could be hiding a red envelope in her fist.
"I don’t want it!"
"You really don’t want it?"
"That’s right, I don’t! You can keep it for yourself!"
"You’re the one who said you didn’t want it."
Jiang Moli opened her hand. Lying in her palm was one of the peanut-sized Silver Ingots.
It was small and delicate, gleaming with a silvery light.
Lu Tingting reached for it, but Jiang Moli quickly snatched her hand back.
"Didn’t you say you didn’t want it?"
"Who wants your stupid thing anyway!"
Lu Tingting turned her head away in a huff.
Jiang Moli laughed. "Say a couple of nice things, and I’ll give it to you. For real, I’m not tricking you."
Lu Tingting’s eyes darted. "May you have many children and many blessings! May you have eight sons in one go!"
Jiang Moli was speechless.
’What a way to curse someone~’
"If I did have eight sons, you can forget about getting married. You’ll be my full-time nanny. I’ll even bestow a nice name upon you: Dehua."
"In your dreams! I’m not helping you raise your kids! Whoever gives birth to them can raise them! If you don’t want to raise them, don’t have them!"
Jiang Moli chuckled and handed over the Silver Ingot. "Here."
Lu Tingting took it dubiously, finding it hard to believe that Jiang Moli had actually given her the Silver Ingot. She stared at it for a long moment before a huge smile broke out across her face.
’It’s so pretty~’
Lu Cheng focused on driving, but his eyes would occasionally glance toward Jiang Moli in the passenger seat, his face filled with happiness and contentment.
’His wife might seem to bicker with his niece on the surface, but deep down, she dotes on her.’
’If they have children of their own someday, his wife will definitely be a wonderful mother~’
...
The car couldn’t enter Plum Valley, so they had to park on the country road outside the village.
Lu Cheng carried some of the holiday gifts they’d brought, and he made Lu Tingting carry the rest.
Lu Tingting was already used to her third uncle’s preferential treatment, so she obediently picked up the items and followed the two into the village.
Before they even reached the Jiang family home, the families of Jiang Dachuan and Jiang Dashan had already gotten word from the villagers and ran out to greet them.
"Say hello. This is Eldest Great-Uncle and Great-Auntie, and this is Second Great-Uncle and Great-Auntie."
Lu Tingting was reluctant, but she opened her mouth and greeted them anyway.
Yang Chunxiang and Ding Yuzhen were so happy they couldn’t stop grinning.
This was the chief’s own granddaughter! Hearing her call them "Great-Auntie" made them feel much closer to the chief’s family.
Both women gave Lu Tingting a large red envelope.
Jiang Dahai also gave Lu Tingting a red envelope with lucky money.
Lu Tingting clutched the three red envelopes, feeling dazed, as if she were in a dream.
’That damn woman was right after all. I really did earn three sets of lucky money.’
