Chapter 586: Chapter 584: Who Do They Look Like?
Han Xiaorui had always thought her own delivery was quick and smooth, but she never expected her younger sister Han Xiaoqing’s to be even quicker and smoother.
Once they reached the delivery room at the hospital, the doctor performed an examination. About half an hour later, it was time.
Seeing her sister covered in sweat, Han Xiaorui grasped her hand. "Xiao Jing, don’t be afraid. I’ll be with you the whole time."
Han Xiaoqing’s face was a little pale, her forehead beaded with sweat. "Thank you, sis."
Han Xiaorui comforted her sister. With Chen Wenxuan absent, she was her sister’s greatest source of support.
"Silly girl, I’m your sister. We’ve supported each other to get to where we are, and we’ll continue to do so for the rest of our lives."
"After you have the baby, we’ll raise our children together. When we’re old and our kids are grown, we’ll retire and travel together, enjoying the sights."
Han Xiaorui was trying her best to help Han Xiaoqing relax and take her mind off things.
It worked quite well; Han Xiaoqing wasn’t as nervous as she had been moments ago.
With her sister by her side and under the professional care of the medical staff, Han Xiaoqing gave birth to a baby boy.
"Seven and a half pounds, a healthy baby boy." The delivery room doctor was very experienced. After a quick examination and hearing the baby’s lusty cries, she knew he was in good condition.
Han Xiaorui held the baby and placed him beside her sister. "Xiao Jing, take a good look. This is the baby you carried for ten months."
Han Xiaoqing looked at his chubby little face. "He’s so cute. Sis, who do you think he looks like?"
Han Xiaorui looked at the baby, then smiled softly. "He looks like his dad!"
Han Xiaoqing laughed in spite of herself. "You’re right. I carry him for ten months, and he ends up looking just like his father."
"It’s perfectly normal for a baby to look like his dad, so don’t be jealous. Besides, look, his nose is just like yours," Han Xiaorui coaxed. ’After all that hard work, it would be a little disappointing if he didn’t resemble her at all,’ she thought.
Han Xiaoqing took a closer look. "It does look a little like me."
Han Xiaorui comforted her sister. "All right, the nurses have cleaned you up. You’ll be going to your room now to get some rest. They’ll come by later to press on your stomach. It’ll hurt a little, but it’s to help you recover better."
With the medical staff’s help, everything went smoothly.
Once she was back in her room and assured that her baby was healthy, Han Xiaoqing slowly drifted off to sleep.
Han Xiaorui told Ye Feng, who was waiting outside, "Xiao Jing had the baby. Look, it’s a boy."
Ye Feng smiled, then paused for a moment. "That bastard Chen Wenxuan... he’s a lucky one. The boy looks just like him."
Han Xiaorui stifled a laugh. "That’s what Xiao Jing said, too. I’ll stay and watch over things here. You should head home. I’m worried about the four kids being there by themselves."
Ye Feng nodded. "Okay. As long as you and Sister Lian are here, I won’t worry. I’ll come over tomorrow morning after I drop the kids off at school."
"If you get hungry, just buy something to eat from the hospital cafeteria. If you’re not starving, just wait for me to bring you some food."
"Sister Cai is an early riser. I’ll ask her to help make something suitable for Xiao Jing. I’ll make sure she gets plenty of nutrition to recover as quickly as possible."
"Okay!" Han Xiaorui hugged Ye Feng. "Thank you. You’re always by my side when I need you most."
"I admire Chen Wenxuan’s dedication to his work, his willingness to sacrifice for his ideals... but seeing my sister have to get through all of this by herself from start to finish... it just breaks my heart."
Ye Feng hugged Han Xiaorui gently and patted her back. "That’s just how it is sometimes. Even the sweetest life has a little bitterness. It’s what gives life its flavor, makes it interesting, and gives you something to look forward to."
Han Xiaorui smiled. "You’re right. I just hope the distance and time apart won’t change things between Xiao Jing and Chen Wenxuan."
After Ye Feng left, Han Xiaorui stayed by her sister’s bed, keeping her company.
Sister Lian was getting on in years, so Han Xiaorui had her rest on the other bed in the room.
Han Xiaorui held her sister’s hand. The baby was in a bassinet next to them, positioned so that anyone who wanted to see him would have to get past Han Xiaorui first.
This was Han Xiaorui’s way of protecting the baby.
She wouldn’t let her guard down, not even in the hospital.
When Han Xiaoqing woke up in the morning, she was touched to see her sister still there. "Sis, you look exhausted. You should go home and rest."
Han Xiaorui waved her hand dismissively. "No, I’m not going anywhere. I need to be here to make sure you’re okay. Your brother-in-law went home, and he’ll bring us food soon. Do you need to go to the bathroom?"
With her sister’s help, Han Xiaoqing got out of bed to use the restroom.
A natural birth was certainly painful, but recovery was also quick.
She was already able to go to the bathroom on her own, as long as she was careful not to strain herself.
They hadn’t called Granny Cai yet, but she had been counting the days and knew Han Xiaoqing’s due date was near.
She got up before dawn every morning.
She came over for her usual morning walk. Ye Feng, having just returned home and bought groceries, was waiting for her.
"Sister Cai, Xiao Jing went to the hospital last night and had the baby," Ye Feng said with a smile. "I bought some groceries. Could you see what would be good to make for her?"
Hearing this, Granny Cai perked right up. "Leave it to me. You go get some sleep."
Ye Feng didn’t stand on ceremony with Granny Cai. "Okay, then. I’ll go get a bit of sleep. I’ll leave breakfast to you, then."
Granny Cai waved her hand. "It’s no trouble at all. It’s what I should do. Later, I’ll go with you to the hospital to relieve Xiao Rui so she can come home and rest."
With Granny Cai’s help, everything felt much more manageable.
She made chicken noodle soup, with the noodles cooked until they were perfectly tender, in a rich, flavorful broth.
In addition, Granny Cai made shrimp dumplings, pan-fried pork buns, and other breakfast dishes.
The children absolutely loved the breakfast Granny Cai made.
"Grandma, your shrimp dumplings are delicious!" Pingping exclaimed.
"Grandma, your pan-fried buns are the best! I love them!"
Ningning and Zhuangzhuang also ate with relish, their faces shiny with oil as they nodded again and again.
After breakfast, Ye Feng dropped the children off at elementary school and kindergarten, then immediately drove Granny Cai to the hospital.
Breakfast was packed in three large thermoses.
Han Xiaoqing ate an entire thermos of the chicken noodle soup—a good two bowls’ worth—and instantly felt her strength returning. "Sister Cai, your cooking is still the best."
Sister Lian sighed. "Compared to yours, my cooking still has a long way to go."
Granny Cai smiled. "If you like it, eat up. I’m a professional chef, so it’s only natural I have a few more tricks up my sleeve. But really, your cooking is already excellent!"
Sister Lian smiled. "You live and you learn. I’ll have to keep learning from you in the future."
"It’s not about teaching, we can just learn from each other," Granny Cai chuckled. "Xiao Rui, you go home and get some rest. I’ll take over here."
Han Xiaorui shook her head. "Sister Lian, you and Ye Feng head back. You can get some rest this morning. Just bring us lunch later, and I’ll go home this afternoon."
"Alright!" Sister Lian agreed, following Han Xiaorui’s plan.
After Sister Lian and Ye Feng had left, Granny Cai asked, "Xiao Jing, have you called your in-laws?"
Han Xiaoqing shook her head. "Not yet."
Han Xiaorui smiled. "There’s no rush. I’ll make a long-distance call in a bit to let them know."
Han Xiaoqing nodded. "Right. As long as we do the proper thing and inform them, it’s fine. It’s up to them whether they come or not. They’re busy with work, and they’re overseas, after all."
Han Xiaorui and Granny Cai exchanged a look and sighed softly.
It seemed neither of the sisters had a particularly close relationship with their in-laws.
