Dylan DuPont’s deep voice rang out as he issued a low warning to the Omni Squad, who had their guns raised. “The emergency stairwell is right next to the elevator! Keep your voices down! Don’t cause unnecessary trouble!”
William Walsh ground his teeth in anger. “Commander Ford! Look at what she did to my sister!”
Kyle Keith interrupted, his tone calm but leaving no room for argument. “Everyone, stand down. Hale, go over and help with the healing.”
A heavily bearded man from the Genesis Team nodded, walking over to join the little boy in treating Sharon Sloan.
Dylan DuPont exchanged a few low words with Kyle Keith before turning to glare coldly at the Omni Squad. “That’s enough! Anyone who wants to cause trouble instead of completing the mission can get out right now!”
He waved the flashlight in his hand, looking exhausted. “You Omni Second Order members are too lazy to even do a menial task like finding the stairs, yet you have the nerve to bother Captain Dawson? If Captain Dawson does all the work, are you going to deal with the Tier Four Zombies in Decron?!”
Ian Wyatt stepped forward, remaining silent for a moment. He looked at Luna Dawson with a complex expression before softening his tone. “Our Second Squad’s captain spoke out of turn. I apologize.” With that, he waved to his team members. “Put your guns away.”
“Glad to see you have some sense,” Luna Dawson said, flashing Ian Wyatt a flamboyant smile. Having sat in a vehicle for over ten hours today, she needed to find a place to rest immediately. She was incredibly annoyed by these buzzing flies.
With that, Luna turned and led the Sunset Squad members upstairs. Having vented her frustration, she was in a great mood and started humming a song with Little Sweet Potato as they climbed the stairs.
Kevin Keane’s voice echoed from the stairwell. “Commander Ford, which floor are we going to rest on?”
Hearing Luna and a robotic voice actually humming a song, Dylan DuPont sighed and replied, “The fifteenth floor.”
Luna’s group made their way upstairs at a leisurely pace, not bothering to spare a single glance for Sharon Sloan. On every floor they passed, they swept the area clean of desks, chairs, cabinets, and any usable appliances. They stored everything into their spatial inventories, muttering, “No matter how small the mosquito, it’s still meat. We’re taking it all back to exchange for points!”
A short while later, under the treatment of two Third Order Healing Ability users, Sharon Sloan fully recovered. Only her scorched pants remained as proof that everything that had just happened was real. The mere thought of the terrifying sensation of almost being strangled to death and thrown down made her scalp tingle, and she couldn’t help but shudder.
William Walsh looked at her drenched form and reached out his hand to Ronan Callahan. “Bring out a set of team uniforms.”
Even though her injuries had been healed, she remained slumped on the ground, unable to stand up. She knew that woman really would have killed her just now!
Kyle Keith’s gentle voice drifted over. “Are you alright?”
Hearing Kyle’s voice, Sharon’s eyes instantly reddened as tears began to fall. PIT-PAT, PIT-PAT. “Captain Kessler, I…”
William Walsh also spoke up indignantly. “If it weren’t for the fact that she’s the only Fourth Order, I would never have begged the officials to let them join this mission!”
Dylan DuPont spoke plainly, “Her mutated plants and animals are all Fourth Order as well. Don’t fall into the same trap twice.”
Instantly, the Omni Squad members felt a chill of terror shoot from the soles of their feet to the tops of their heads! Just now, their Omni Squad had provoked five Fourth Order monsters! No wonder the zombies had given up banging on the doors and run away! Anyone who had just taken a stroll on the edge of King Yanluo’s blade would undoubtedly feel a lingering fear.
William Walsh and Sharon Sloan immediately settled down.
“I’ll help you over there to change your clothes,” William said.
“Okay…” Sharon replied in a hoarse voice.
Ian Wyatt, on the other hand, breathed a sigh of relief. Once Sharon had taken a moment to recover and change her clothes, the Omni Squad began climbing toward the fifteenth floor under Ian’s lead.
Sharon and William walked at the very end of the line, leaning on each other as they made their way up.
Yvonne Ford, Shaun Barnes, and a few others trailed behind them. The group exchanged glances, their eyes sparkling with the thrill of watching drama unfold. Of all the people to provoke, they just had to provoke Kensington’s top squad. They were practically asking for a beating. Did they think this was the Corbin of the past? No one treated their Omni Squad like local tyrants anymore. This was the apocalypse now, and the Kensington Base was teeming with formidable experts who could teach them a lesson in a matter of minutes.
As the group climbed the stairs, the line suddenly came to a halt. The Omni Squad members shined their flashlights across the floor, speaking in shocked tones. “Holy crap! What’s going on with every floor? Has this whole place been looted?” Everyone pulled out their flashlights and shined them around, completely dumbfounded. There was a layer of dust on the ground with the clear outlines of where desks and chairs used to sit, but not a single valuable item was left. It was ridiculously clean.
“Is every floor like this?” someone muttered. They climbed up two more floors, only to find the exact same scene. “The Sunset Squad’s efficiency is more ruthless than a professional scavenging crew!”
As soon as they reached the tenth floor, Shaun Barnes seemed to spot something. “Wait a second!” He aimed his flashlight at the reception desk, where a small doll pendant had been dropped among a pile of documents. Taking a few quick steps over to pick it up, his eyes lit up. “It’s still wrapped in plastic! Looks pretty new!” He tore off the plastic wrapper and directly attached it to Yvonne Ford’s tactical backpack.
Yvonne turned her head to look at it, then raised her eyes to ask him, “Does it look good?”
“It looks great!” Shaun beamed at Yvonne, his eyes full of stars.
Sharon turned her head and glared at their blissful display, finding it utterly irritating. She let out a cold scoff, her tone arrogant and disdainful. “So petty and cheap. Just like the people from the Sunset Squad, collecting whatever garbage you can find.”
Yvonne immediately fired back. “Petty and cheap? Do you have any idea how many people in the base don’t even have a decent desk? You’ve got it easy, making snide remarks from your high horse. If you’re so generous, why don’t we see you, Miss Sloan, bringing out some furniture for charity?”
Sharon cast her a sidelong glance, her chin raised high with a face full of superiority. “Do you know how much the research results of the OmniCorp research institute are worth? You think this broken furniture is even worthy of being compared to me?”
Shaun blew up the moment he heard this. He took a step forward, boldly defending his girlfriend. “Omni this, Omni that, stop putting on airs! If it weren’t for people like us risking our lives on missions to gather things, your research institute wouldn’t even have the chance to recover its experimental results! If you’re so capable, why didn’t your own squad come to save your dad?!”
Dylan DuPont pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling utterly helpless. He thought to himself that this girl was decent-looking, but her brain wasn’t very sharp. Was she not going to be satisfied until she offended everyone who had come to save her father?
Seeing that several people were turning against her, Sharon’s eyes turned slightly red, and she spoke frantically. “How could you all…”
Before she could finish, Dylan cut her off sharply. “Enough, shut up! Save your energy for the job, stick to your respective posts, and head upstairs together to set up camp and rest!”
Seeing that the deputy commander had spoken, Sharon didn’t dare utter another word. She looked as stifled as if she had just swallowed a fly. She shot vicious glares at Yvonne and Shaun before turning back around in a huff to continue climbing the stairs.
When they finally reached the fifteenth floor, the area was filled with small office cubicles. The doors to a few executive offices were closed, and SPLISH-SPLASH, the drizzling rain beat against the windows, leaving trails of moisture.
Luna’s group had arrived long ago. She had already stored all the desks and chairs from the lounge area into her spatial inventory, forcefully clearing out a space of about two hundred square meters—more than enough for everyone to set up camp. Having set out from the base early in the morning, everyone was already exhausted. The most important thing right now was to get a good night’s rest and recharge their spirits, so they could delve deeper into the research institute tomorrow.
Kyle Keith glanced down at the time on his wristband. Turning to exchange a look with Dylan DuPont, he raised his voice. “Everyone, rest where you are. Don’t wander off, and stay alert!”
“Understood!” everyone replied in unison.
