Chapter 235: Standing Up for Fu Xiaoxiao

Chapter 235: Chapter 235: Standing Up for Fu Xiaoxiao

As long as it’s done according to her plan, Upper River Village will surely thrive, and Fu Xiaoxiao will be the great benefactor of the village.

Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui could go to any village they wanted, but they had to come to ours and speak ill of Fu Xiaoxiao right in front of us.

That’s just courting disaster!

Fu Xiaoxiao didn’t know that the Fu Family had come looking for her. At that moment, she was riding in a car, bumping along the road to Beijing. Sure, it was tiring, but compared to taking the bus, Fu Xiaoxiao still felt that the truck was better.

At least the scenery along the way was genuinely beautiful.

But Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui weren’t pretty at all; the conditions at the Liu Family weren’t good, and there was a manure pit next to them with mosquitoes flying around.

In the whole village, only the Liu Family had available rooms. No matter how dissatisfied Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui were, there was nothing they could do.

They spent two yuan to stay the night there, and got two bowls of nondescript stew as a bonus.

"Buzz~~~"

"Smack!"

"Smack! Smack! Smack!"

"Ah! It’s so annoying! How can anyone sleep like this? There are mosquitoes everywhere, I’ve been bitten all over." Fu Xiaocui was exhausted from lack of sleep and was feeling miserable.

Her legs, arms, and even face had several bites from mosquitoes, and they itched terribly.

Fu Minghua was in the room next to hers, fuming inside, but his ears kept being assaulted by the annoying buzzing of mosquitoes.

"Buzz~~~ Buzz~~ Buzz~~~"

His forehead throbbed with veins, and Fu Minghua hadn’t endured treatment like this for many years.

"Hey, hey, buddy!" Fu Minghua nudged the man sleeping soundly on the floor. Despite the bothersome mosquitoes, they didn’t seem to affect him at all.

"What are you doing? I’ve got work tomorrow! Disturbing people in the middle of the night." The man, rudely awakened from his sweet dream, looked at Fu Minghua displeased.

"Sorry, buddy, there are just too many mosquitoes here. I was wondering if you have anything to repel them?" Fu Minghua asked, holding back his temper.

"No, no! This is the countryside, not the city. You want to stay, stay; if you can’t, then get lost! What a fuss." The man didn’t care about Fu Minghua; having been woken up, his temper flared, and without indulging him, he waved his hand dismissively and went back to sleep.

Fu Minghua pursed his lips and had no choice but to bury his head under the quilt to block out the mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, Fu Xiaocui wasn’t as smart. She spent the whole night swatting mosquitoes until dawn when the mosquitoes, disturbed by the light, finally dispersed.

She just fell asleep when the man next door woke up, making a racket in the kitchen, driving Fu Xiaocui, who hadn’t slept well all night, to the brink of collapse!

"What are you doing? Don’t you know I just fell asleep? Stop making noise..." Fu Xiaocui shouted.

"Who cares! I’m making breakfast. Gotta eat breakfast and go to work! Unlike you, so comfortable, sleeping at this hour." The man glared at Fu Xiaocui and continued making his breakfast.

"Dad!!" Fu Xiaocui rushed to Fu Minghua’s room, shouting and crying her complaints.

"Alright, stop it! I just got a little sleep too." Fu Minghua said sternly, his face grim. Fu Xiaocui, seeing him like that, didn’t dare to complain further and returned to her room sulking.

As she was about to sleep, the smell from the manure pit, intensified by the sun’s rays, started wafting through the air.

Fu Xiaocui felt waves of foul odor, making it impossible to sleep, let alone stay there.

Fu Minghua couldn’t stand it either. The two of them ran out of the rooms, covering their mouths as they hurried away.

It was only after they were far from the manure pit that they dared to stop.

But the stench seemed to have clung to their clothes, and no matter where they went, the smell wafted around them.

"What’s with these two? Why do they stink so much? Are city folks really that filthy?"

Villagers passing by on their way to work saw the disheveled father and daughter, and upon smelling the stench coming from them, covered their noses and quickened their pace to get away.

"Dad! I want to go home." Fu Xiaocui sobbed, feeling wronged by the looks she was getting.

"One more visit," Fu Minghua said with a grim face, deciding to make one last attempt to go to the military base.

"...Okay." Fu Xiaocui didn’t dare to oppose him, meekly following behind Fu Minghua.

As soon as the two left Upper River Village, the villagers burst into laughter.

"Oh my goodness! You’re a genius! How did you come up with such a brilliant plan? It’s too clever." Aunt Zhang laughed, patting Aunt Wang’s shoulder. Since finding out that Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui were enemies of Fu Xiaoxiao, Aunt Zhang had been thinking of ways to teach them a lesson.

Then Aunt Wang said she had already arranged them at the Liu Family’s place, and the villagers shared a knowing smile.

Everyone in the village knew the situation at the Liu Family’s home; due to its proximity to the manure pit, the house always had a lingering odor, except at night.

Most people avoided them. The Liu Family’s parents had passed away, leaving only a son, who remained single in his thirties.

After all, the conditions were really poor, and no woman was willing to marry a man who lived next to a manure pit.

"They dressed up to look presentable, but all that came out of their mouths was filth; clearly, they’re no good people." Aunt Zhang saw Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui yesterday. They wore fine fabrics, but their expressions gave them away.

Looking at the village’s conditions as they entered, Fu Xiaocui’s eyes were filled with disdain. Although she said nothing, her gaze was a dead giveaway.

Fu Xiaoxiao had visited their village many times, and she was never dismissive; she even brought them sweets, never putting on airs.

In comparison, Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui weren’t even worth a strand of Fu Xiaoxiao’s hair.

Two people with their noses in the air, nobody would like them.

"They still want to go to the military to find Xiao Xiao!" Aunt Zhang could see the calculation in Fu Minghua’s eyes; he still wanted to latch onto Fu Xiaoxiao.

"They’re bound to have a wasted trip; Xiao Xiao left long ago." Aunt Wang laughed heartily.

The crowd sneered, laughing at Fu Minghua’s futile schemes, without even knowing where Fu Xiaoxiao was.

Even they knew when she had set off, yet the self-proclaimed relatives of the Fu Family bragged and badmouthed Fu Xiaoxiao, trying to smear her.

When Fu Minghua and Fu Xiaocui returned to the military gate, the soldiers frowned, smelled the odor on them, and immediately drove them away.

"No loitering allowed; this is not a place for you to approach. Leave quickly."

"Comrade, we’re here to visit our family; we want to see Comrade Fu Xiaoxiao. Could you please inform her?" Fu Minghua thought he could get the new soldier on duty to let them in.

"Please provide identification to prove your relation to her." The soldier smiled and extended his hand toward them.

Word had already spread in the military about people trying to sneak in under the guise of being Fu Xiaoxiao’s relatives. Did they think the soldiers wouldn’t know since the guard had changed?

"...I’m really Fu Xiaoxiao’s father, and this is her sister..." Fu Minghua claimed loudly.

"You say, so it is? I could say I’m your dad too! Don’t cause trouble here, and get lost!" One soldier gave him a glare and stepped forward to push him away. "Otherwise, don’t blame us for taking action."
