Gu Shengsheng had thought she was cold-hearted, that she could completely move on.
After all, she had reasoned with herself countless times.
But right now, an uncomfortable feeling was welling up inside her. It was as if something was caught in her chest.
Gu Shengsheng had always found such emotions strange, never thinking they were something she should be feeling.
But now, it was truly uncomfortable.
Gu Shengsheng started to dial for an ambulance, but paused and asked, “Do you need to go to the hospital?”
Lu Shijing shook his head. “No, I’ll be fine once the rash subsides.”
“It’s just… I’m kind of craving some noodles.” He had been sitting up straight, but now he was propping his head up with his hand, looking dazed.
Gu Shengsheng had no intention of making him noodles. She didn’t want to get entangled with him at all; her plan had been to drop off her things and leave.
But now, she couldn’t bring herself to leave, if only for humanitarian reasons.
She walked straight into the kitchen. “Do you have any noodles?”
“Yes. There are vegetables and eggs in the fridge, too. See? Everything’s laid out just like before.”
Hearing the sudden energy in his voice, Gu Shengsheng turned to look, only to find Lu Shijing lying down again, looking miserable.
Gu Shengsheng: “…”
For some reason, she always felt like he was faking sick, but when she really looked, he was just sitting there, perfectly fine.
Gu Shengsheng scratched her head, then went to make the noodles.
By the time she brought out the noodles, Lu Shijing was looking much better. Even the redness on his skin had faded considerably.
Gu Shengsheng had gotten hungry in the process, so she lifted the bowl and took a big bite of the noodles herself.
Lu Shijing looked dazed and a little confused. “Weren’t those noodles for me?”
“They were. But you seem to be doing just fine now. I’ll leave after I finish eating.” ‘Might as well eat it since it’s here.’
After saying this, Gu Shengsheng calmly took two more bites. Then, Lu Shijing snatched the bowl from her.
As if afraid she would steal it back, he quickly scarfed down a few mouthfuls to stake his claim.
Gu Shengsheng was a little thirsty and noticed a bottle of liquor on the table. She poured some into a glass and took a sip.
“It’s sweet. What is this?”
“Fruit wine. It’s not very strong,” Lu Shijing said, lying through his teeth as he ate his noodles. In reality, it was 42% alcohol, not really fruit wine at all.
Gu Shengsheng believed him and downed two glasses in one go. “I was so thirsty. I’ll leave after I finish this.”
When Gu Shengsheng reached the door, her legs suddenly gave out, and she nearly fell to her knees.
Luckily, Lu Shijing rushed over and caught her in his arms.
Gu Shengsheng frowned. “What’s happening?”
“I’m dizzy.”
Lu Shijing said, “You’re tired. Just rest for a bit.”
He helped her to the sofa, and then said very seriously, “Shengsheng, I have something important to tell you. It’s about us.”
Gu Shengsheng shook her head. “I’m not sober right now.”
But Lu Shijing seemed determined to speak. “I never wanted to divorce you.”
“I never wanted it at all. Can I still marry you? I mean, do I still have a chance to pursue you?”
He would never have dared to say this if Gu Shengsheng were sober. He had to be a little cunning about it.
“If you don’t say anything, I’ll take that as a yes.” He was afraid that if he waited even a second longer, she would disagree or reject him.
Who knew that Gu Shengsheng would just say, “No.”
“Trying to take advantage of me while I’m down? Lu Shijing, shut up.” Though drunk, Gu Shengsheng wasn’t incoherent. In fact, her words were far more blunt than usual.
And a lot meaner, too.
At this point, Lu Shijing started to feel that his “well-intentioned” lie had been a bad idea.
He frowned and leaned in, trying to see if her eyes could focus.
As soon as he got close, Gu Shengsheng punched him right in the eye.
Lu Shijing let out a muffled grunt. Gu Shengsheng said, “I’m really annoyed right now. Don’t come near me.”
It was obvious that Gu Shengsheng was in a foul mood and very angry.
Lu Shijing said with a laugh, “It’s okay, I’m fine.”
“Don’t feel bad about it.”
“I don’t,” Gu Shengsheng said, waving her hand. “Move away a little. I feel flustered when you’re this close.”
Lu Shijing obediently started to move away, but Gu Shengsheng suddenly grabbed him and pressed her lips against his.
Lu Shijing: “…”
This was his first kiss in over twenty years of life. Although Lu Shijing seemed experienced, he was, in fact, only twenty-eight.
Gu Shengsheng was twenty-four, making for a perfect four-year age gap. It wasn’t too big of a difference. He was, after all, just a twenty-eight-year-old virgin.
This was his first time experiencing something like this, and his brain felt like it had just short-circuited.
His first instinct was to push Gu Shengsheng away, but then his heart pounded, and he deepened the kiss instead.
Some things, it turned out, came naturally.
After a moment, Gu Shengsheng, unable to breathe, pushed Lu Shijing away.
Gu Shengsheng gasped for air. “I don’t feel well.”
Lu Shijing’s face was all smiles, and his gaze on Gu Shengsheng was smoldering with affection.
Then Lu Shijing continued, “Shengsheng, let’s go get our marriage license tomorrow.”
“No,” Gu Shengsheng said with a wave of her hand.
“But you already kissed me,” Lu Shijing pressed.
Gu Shengsheng frowned. “I’m the one who lost out, aren’t I?”
“Lu Shijing, as a rule, I don’t go for men more than three years older than me.”
Lu Shijing: “…” ‘Three years.’
He was, as it happened, exactly four years older.
Lu Shijing frowned. “What kind of logic is that?”
“What’s the difference between three years and four years?”
In truth, Gu Shengsheng wasn’t so muddled anymore. To be precise, she had sobered up the moment the kiss ended.
‘There’s no way I can let this continue!’
‘What is all this?’
‘His lips just looked like jelly, and I didn’t think too much about it. I was thirsty, so I just went for it.’
And she was the one who had initiated it, too.
What else could she do?
Other than pretending to still be drunk, Gu Shengsheng had no other option.
Saying “three years” right now was just a calculated move to make Lu Shijing give up hope.
Gu Shengsheng continued her act. “Yes, it has to be within three years. A four-year difference is huge. There’s the age gap, and all sorts of other things. Like, we don’t think on the same level. For me, you’re too old.”
“…” Lu Shijing was genuinely crushed when he heard this.
He frowned, completely at a loss.
Even though it was her first time kissing someone so aggressively, Gu Shengsheng put on an experienced air. “It’s nothing. We’re all adults.”
“Don’t get hung up on it.”
The look in Lu Shijing’s eyes grew even more wounded, and he fell silent.
Gu Shengsheng stood up. “I’m leaving.”
Lu Shijing quickly stopped her. “If you don’t want me around, I’ll leave. You can sleep here. I haven’t touched your room. I’ll go next door.”
Then, there was only the sound of a closing door.
