Gu Shengsheng overheard the gist of it: an artifact had been stolen, a major incident, so the exhibition was being suspended. No one was allowed to enter or leave the museum.
Gu Shengsheng frowned. Thefts at the Da Ying Museum were a common occurrence; she had often seen them in the news.
This was the first time she’d experienced it herself, though.
Having just arrived in a foreign country, she had no desire to get involved in the commotion. Seeing that everyone else who hadn’t gone through security was leaving, Gu Shengsheng decided to turn around and head back to her hotel.
But to her surprise, a security guard stopped her. “Miss, I’ll need to see your bag.”
Gu Shengsheng: ?
“I didn’t go inside. Everyone else is leaving without having their bags checked. Why are you checking mine?”
She didn’t understand. On what grounds were they singling her out for a search?
Then, a comment drifted over: “Is she one of those Huaxia people?”
“It’s always Huaxia people who are behind this petty theft. Especially with artifacts.”
“I don’t know, but people with that skin color are usually hard to get along with. Who knows what the deal is.”
“We’re all locals. You don’t think it could be one of us, do you? It’s only normal they wouldn’t search us.”
“…”
All sorts of malicious rumors swirled around her.
Listening to this, Gu Shengsheng seethed with anger. She actually laughed out of sheer fury. “Wow, you guys are a real riot.”
“How is it that whenever something happens, it’s ‘one of us Huaxia people’? Originally, I had nothing in my bag and wouldn’t have minded a search, but now? Now I’m not letting you search anything.”
Gu Shengsheng stood her ground, clutching her bag and staring down the museum’s security guards.
The museum staff, for their part, looked even more grim, even increasing the number of guards. In an instant, a crowd of uniformed personnel was staring at Gu Shengsheng.
It was as if she had already committed some grave crime.
The locals from Eagle Country around them also started taking out their phones to record. Gu Shengsheng stood there with her arms crossed. The bigger the crowd, the less intimidated she felt.
The lead security guard said directly, “Miss, please cooperate with the inspection. This is official procedure. The museum has lost an item, and it concerns you.”
“We have reasonable suspicion.”
The words came one after another, each one sounding more absurd to Gu Shengsheng than the last.
“This is hilarious. How could an item lost from your museum possibly be related to me, someone who never even went inside?”
“If I had been inside, you could suspect me. But the thing is, I wasn’t! What the hell is there to suspect?!”
Gu Shengsheng was speechless.
‘Now I’m even more convinced they can’t find a culprit, so they’re looking for a scapegoat to take the fall for the stolen item, and I just happen to be the unlucky one.’
She had to prepare for the worst.
Following that, the crowd grew larger, and the security guards’ language became increasingly nasty. A few of the rougher ones in the back even drew their guns and started cursing loudly.
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t scared. This was a foreign country, after all, where guns were legal. If they did something rash, Gu Shengsheng felt that any injury to herself would be irreversible.
She couldn’t help it; she cherished her own well-being more than anything. Even getting a single scratch would piss her off.
So, Gu Shengsheng simply sat down right there. If they wanted to play hardball, she wasn’t afraid.
Just then, the museum director arrived and whispered a few words to the people beside him.
Many of the guards then stepped aside. The director, dressed like a gentleman, walked over to Gu Shengsheng and said, “Hello, my name is Jack. I’m the director of the Da Ying Museum.”
“A major incident occurred at the Da Ying Museum today. As a tourist, we hope you can assist with the investigation. Our job is quite difficult.”
Gu Shengsheng replied, “I’m naturally willing to help with an investigation. It’s just that none of the other tourists who also hadn’t entered the museum were investigated. Why am I required to be?”
The Da Ying Museum director looked completely surprised. “Is that the case? It would be very troublesome for us to go back and check the surveillance footage. So, are you saying you won’t cooperate?”
“A search doesn’t take long, Miss. Don’t interfere with our work. Alright?”
But Gu Shengsheng was still livestreaming. The voices from the surrounding crowd were getting louder. Some people were already starting to make accusations.
“Why won’t she cooperate with the investigation for no reason? Is she hiding some dirty secret?”
“Someone like that is definitely hiding something. You all better investigate her thoroughly. Let’s stay away from her.”
Then, that so-called director of the Da Ying Museum looked at Gu Shengsheng and chuckled. “Miss, are you truly refusing to cooperate? In that case, we’ll have to legally detain you as a suspect.”
Gu Shengsheng took out her passport, her travel itinerary, and the screen recording from her livestream, all while sitting on the ground.
“Look,” she said, “This is all proof of my trip. I never even went inside, so how can you stand here and suspect me?”
They had originally planned to just haul her away as a suspect, but they hadn’t expected her to have a screen recording.
It gave her a solid alibi. The director then asked, “Why would an ordinary tourist like you be recording your screen? Why do you have so much evidence? Was this all prepared in advance?”
“Counter-surveillance skills? Someone like you definitely needs to be brought in for questioning.”
“I’ve seen many people like you doing shady things before—stealing plastic bags from supermarkets, lots of vagrants, and many unemployed people on the streets. That’s why your theft rate is so high.”
A sarcastic look spread across Jack’s face. “A young girl like you, starting this line of work as soon as you get abroad… it’s really not something to be proud of. The antiques here are worth trillions.”
“An amount of money your class of people could never even comprehend. So you… are about to face a lawsuit.”
He hadn’t even finished his smug speech, hadn’t even had time to give her a few more of his nasty glares, when Gu Shengsheng slapped him right across the face.
Then she kicked him and, still not satisfied, started raining punches on his face.
He kept shouting, “Lunatic! Lunatic! You’re completely insane!”
Gu Shengsheng’s livestream was still on. Her viewers had been worried sick about her, afraid something would happen, and were cursing out the foreigners for being so unreasonable.
Netizens:
“HOLY SHIT! I always knew our Sister Gu was a badass, but I never expected her to be THIS much of a badass! This is insane!”
“Even though Sister Gu is in danger, I have to admit, this is so satisfying. That psycho needs to learn that we’re tough as nails!”
“Putting everything else aside, the moment I saw that psycho Jack, I knew he had a punchable face. What kind of person just comes over and says there’s a problem with our people? They want to take our money, but then they turn around and talk shit behind our backs. Are they all just psychos?”
“…”
The comments poured in endlessly, all expressing disgust.
Gu Shengsheng’s stream had already attracted a lot of official attention. At this point, everyone started contacting the embassy, and many enthusiastic netizens helped by tagging relevant accounts.
