Chapter 263 - 255: Silver is More Important Than Life

Chapter 263: Chapter 255: Silver is More Important Than Life

Ms. Zhang had sharp eyes. From a distance, she saw Erzhu carrying Dazhu on his back and immediately frowned. "I doubt he’s fine. If he were fine, would my Erzhu need to carry him home?"

By then, Bai Erzhu had gotten closer. Old Mrs. Bai and Liu saw the situation clearly and rushed up to them.

"Oh my, what happened? What in the world happened?"

Bai Erzhu was already too exhausted to speak. Mustering his last bit of strength, he hurried to get Bai Dazhu into the house.

Bai Dabao explained to his grandmother and Liu, "My dad broke his leg. It’s really hurting him right now."

The color drained from the faces of Old Mrs. Bai, Liu, and Ms. Zhang. Each with their own thoughts, they said nothing more and hurried inside.

Bai Erzhu laid his older brother on the bed. The motion made Bai Dazhu let out a horrific howl, like a pig being slaughtered.

Liu was the first to burst into the room, throwing herself before Bai Dazhu’s bed. "Oh, Dazhu, how did you break your leg? What are we going to do? If you’re crippled, what will happen to our family?!"

Ms. Zhang and Erzhu, who was covered in sweat and mud, exchanged a look. Their expressions were grim, but they said nothing.

Old Mrs. Bai scowled, glaring at Liu as she snapped, "What are you wailing about? Did your parents die or something? Your husband is lying right here, and he’s not dead yet, but you’re already carrying on like this. If anyone outside heard you, they’d think you were already a widow."

Old Mrs. Bai was filled with anger and had nowhere to vent it, so she was simply taking it out on Liu.

Liu didn’t dare to argue. She had to endure whatever scolding Old Mrs. Bai dished out; otherwise, Dazhu’s leg was sure to be crippled.

"Mother, Dazhu is the eldest son of the Bai Family, the pillar of our household! We can’t let him become a cripple! Mother, you have to save him," Liu wailed, kneeling before Old Mrs. Bai.

’In any other family,’ she thought, ’if someone got hurt—whether a hand or a leg—as long as they had money, using it for treatment would be the natural thing to do. Would anyone even need to beg?’

’But the Bai Family was different. Old Mrs. Bai’s stinginess was legendary. Liu had been her daughter-in-law for over a decade; how could she not know what the old woman was like? She valued that silver more than her own life.’

Old Mrs. Bai said, "Dazhu is my son. He’s injured; I’m no happier about this than you are. What kind of talk is that? As if I wouldn’t save him."

’Bai Sanzhu is your son too,’ Ms. Zhang thought bitterly. ’Did you save him? What about your own husband? Did you save him?’

Bai Xiaofeng, who had been asleep in his room, was woken by the commotion. He got up, noticing an oil lamp was lit in his parents’ room—something that had never happened before. ’Could it be they brought back the potatoes and are eating them without me?’

Bai Xiaofeng rushed into his parents’ room. He saw his father wailing on the bed, his mother kneeling before their grandmother and wiping away tears, his older brother filthy from head to toe, and his Second Aunt looking grim.

"What’s wrong? What happened?" Bai Xiaofeng squeezed his way to Bai Dazhu’s bedside.

Seeing her younger son, Liu scrambled to her feet and grabbed his hand. "Xiaofeng! Your father broke his leg trying to get food for our family! It’s hurting him badly, and if we don’t find a doctor, I’m afraid his leg will be crippled! What are we supposed to do?"

Bai Xiaofeng raised an eyebrow. "What’s to be done? A broken leg isn’t that big of a deal. Just get a doctor to treat it. Doctors have plenty of experience with injuries like broken arms and legs. As long as it’s not too serious, they can usually fix it."
