My Midlife Comeback System Comes 16 Years Early

Chapter 116 - 15: Inside and Outside the Door

Chapter 116: Chapter 15: Inside and Outside the Door

The sound of water in a bathroom was a very logical thing.

As expected of an en-suite bathroom in a VIP intensive care ward, the space was quite spacious. Although it didn’t have a strict wet and dry separation, the shower area was partitioned off. The whole place was extremely clean, tidy, and completely odorless.

Aside from the faint smell of disinfectant in the air, Zhang Yan couldn’t even tell this was a hospital room.

As his junior’s acting skills rapidly soared, Zhang Yan also got more and more into character, increasingly appreciating the joy of roleplay.

He finally understood why some people, when purchasing special services, often asked the girls to wear specific outfits and act out cringeworthy scenarios.

As it turned out, it really was quite interesting!

Of course, Zhang Yan had to declare that he only knew about these scenarios because a friend told him; he personally didn’t watch such things.

When his junior instinctively rubbed the back of her neck against him, the act finally became a little hard to keep up.

Although she appeared to have her eyes squeezed tightly shut, she had actually cracked them open just a sliver, secretly peeking at his expressions the whole time.

The corners of her lips were also curled up in an almost imperceptible smile, clearly struggling to hold it back.

Zhang Yan instantly broke character as well. "Alright, alright, playtime is over. When did you realize it was me?"

Realizing she no longer needed to play along with Zhang Yan’s act, Chi Xinyue gave a goofy smile. "I noticed ages ago. Hehehe."

"If you knew it was me, why didn’t you say anything? Why did you keep stringing me along?"

"Hehehe, you looked like you wanted to roleplay, so I had no choice but to reluctantly play along!"

"Reluctantly? You didn’t look very reluctant just now."

"Oh, that’s only because of you."

"What about me?"

Chi Xinyue turned her head back, falling silent for a long time.

"Senior, I’m willing to do anything for you!"

Moved by these beautiful words of love, Zhang Yan held her tightly.

The two elderly men pushed the door open, chatting and laughing. Seeing no sign of Chi Xinyue, they assumed she had returned to her hotel.

"Chenghu, your days are finally looking up. It’s time to consider finding a partner for your twilight years. I think that nurse downstairs is quite nice—kind-hearted and good at taking care of people," Chi Chenglong said.

"Nonsense! That girl is only thirty-five or thirty-six this year. We’re nearly a full generation apart in age!"

"You’re too old-fashioned. A few years ago, there was a forty-one-year-old big boss who married a twenty-two-year-old girl, and they’re still very much in love!"

Father Chi seemed a bit swayed by this. It appeared he really did have a slight interest in that thirty-something nurse.

"Let’s wait until I’ve fully recovered. Otherwise, if something happens to me, wouldn’t I just be holding her back? Besides, I still have to ask my daughter for her opinion."

Having worked up a slight sweat from his walk, Father Chi naturally wanted to take a shower. However, when he gave the bathroom door a hard push, it didn’t budge.

"Huh, someone’s in here? Sweetie, is that you? You haven’t gone back yet?"

Father Chi had never really paid attention to the bathroom’s soundproofing, so relying on common sense, he instinctively called out loudly.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the door.

CLUNK. The sudden rattling of the door handle sent a long, violent shudder through both of them.

Fortunately, Zhang Yan had heard the tale of the "Mystic Gate War God" and had developed the habit of always locking doors behind him, no matter what he was doing. Otherwise, it would have been a monumental embarrassment.

Kings shouldn’t meet kings, and a real father certainly shouldn’t meet a bedroom "daddy." Meeting under these circumstances would completely ruin the family hierarchy!

However, the bathroom’s soundproofing was incredibly effective. The two of them hadn’t heard Father Chi’s shouts; they could only guess that the two elders had returned from their walk and needed to use the toilet for some reason.

After a while, the person knocking on the door seemed to have given up after not receiving a response. Following a few more heavy thuds—BANG BANG BANG—the noise ceased.

The two of them didn’t move for a long time, deeply experiencing their reunion. After all, they hadn’t seen each other for three days, and a day apart felt like several years!

BZZZ. BZZZ. Chi Xinyue’s phone started buzzing.

Although neither of them wanted to pay it any attention, the ringtone stubbornly persisted. Having it as background music wasn’t exactly ideal.

"You’d better answer it. It’s probably your father. If you keep ignoring it, he’ll start worrying."

Since his junior was in an awkward position, Zhang Yan helped fish the phone out of her pants pocket and held it to her ear.

"Hello, Dad, what’s up? I’m using the bathroom. Were you the one knocking earlier?"

"Ah, you are in there! I thought a thief had broken in. I was just about to go fetch security. Well, that’s fine then...

"Say, sweetie, why does your voice sound so weak? Are you not feeling well? Do you want me to go find a doctor to take a look at you later?"

"Oh, I’m fine! I just... um... just took a nap, and I’m still half asleep."

"Oh, is that so? But..."

"Alright, Dad! I’m... I’m still using the bathroom!"

"Oh, right, right, right. I’ll hang up then."

Father Chi put his phone away, feeling somewhat perplexed. "Why is she sleeping again?" he muttered.

He recalled that not too long ago, back in their hometown of Bai City, something similar seemed to have happened. Although everything seemed perfectly reasonable, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off!

"Does my girl have some underlying health issue? I need to ask the doctor one of these days what causes constant daytime lethargy..." he mumbled to himself.

"What are you muttering about? The girl spends all day worrying about you, so she probably just didn’t sleep well at night. What else could it be?" Chi Chenglong reasoned.

"That makes sense. My daughter has always been very healthy."

Thirty minutes later.

"Something isn’t right. How can she be using the bathroom for so long?"

"It does seem a bit long. Did she eat something bad?" This time, Chi Chenglong was also unsure.

Father Chi could no longer sit still and dialed her number once again.

It rang for a long time again, and just as he was growing incredibly anxious, the call finally connected.

"Hello, sweetie? Are you sure you’re not feeling unwell? Why haven’t you..."

SPLASH. The sound of a running shower echoed through the phone.

"Dad, what is it this time? I’m taking a shower! I told you I just took a nap, and I woke up all sweaty!"

"Oh, I see. I thought you were sick. That’s fine then, I won’t bother you anymore. Keep washing up."

Hanging up the phone, Father Chi finally relaxed.

"The girl is taking a shower in there. She’s fine. She must be in a really good mood, too; I even heard the sound of her splashing around!

"You know, ever since she was little, she loved jumping in puddles, covering herself in mud every single time!"

"Hahaha, I remember that too! There was this one time it rained, and she insisted on stomping in the puddles outside. She got completely covered in mud!"

"Now the girl is all grown up and has found a good man to settle down with. Once I’m cured of this illness, I’ll truly be able to enjoy my twilight years in peace."

"Isn’t that the truth? In the blink of an eye, so many years have passed."

The two elders leisurely reminisced about the past and dreamed of the future. Before they knew it, another large chunk of time had slipped away.
