Chapter 404: Chapter 400: The Source of the Fel Energy Notes
Fierce tongues of fire shot into the air, heralding the official start of the siege.
Baron Cruz and his men watched the hundreds of black dots flying toward them, a tingling numbness spreading across their scalps. Some soldiers even swallowed subconsciously, trying to ease the pressure in their chests.
Kaelon roared, "Crossbowmen, get ready!"
The Celestial Tier Warrior’s roar snapped the stunned Crossbowmen back to their senses. They came to, one after another, removing the safeties from the Fel Energy Bombs and releasing the catches on their Crossbow Mechanisms.
WHOOSH!
Amidst the sharp sound of tearing air, a volley of Crossbow Arrows flew out in a high arc. Some struck the city walls, while others landed within, and soon a chorus of explosions erupted.
However, the Skydivers were clearly prepared. They had all soared to a higher altitude, beyond the maximum range of the Crossbow Arrows, leaving them completely unharmed.
Baron Cruz snapped out of his daze. "Everyone, raise your Shields! Defend against the aerial attack!"
"Prepare to use ’Holy Shield Barrier’!"
Kaelon looked at Simone, who nodded and immediately gathered the Advanced and Human Tier Warriors to use the Holy Shield Barrier Combat Technique.
This was a Combat Technique Duane had acquired after achieving Perfection in Basic Shield Skill. When used, it not only expanded a Shield’s defensive range, but multiple users could combine their power to form an impenetrable wall of Fighting Qi.
The Skydivers in the air took sharp spears from their backs and began to hurl them down. Some also used Spell Scrolls, splashed poison, or drew bows to fire arrows.
Fortunately, they didn’t seem to have weapons like Fel Energy Bombs, or Duane’s side would have suffered catastrophic losses.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The sounds of fierce battle rang out. Although the Skydivers were a terrifying sight, their methods of attack were limited. Kaelon and the others responded quickly, preventing widespread casualties.
Of course, death was unavoidable. There were always those who, in a moment of carelessness, were pierced through the head by a sharp descending spear or had their skin seared by potent poison.
"You despicable bastards, all you know is how to fly around up there!"
Many cursed inwardly, completely forgetting the excitement they had felt when Duane himself was flying through the air, cutting down enemies.
"Their spears and Arrows have to run out eventually! They’ll have to come down then!"
"We just have to hold on!"
Without air superiority, all they could do was take the beating.
Duane glanced at the scene. ’I need to create Magic Flying Carpets, or use Contract Scrolls to raise a team with Flying Mounts.’
With a light twirl of his Long Spear, Duane focused his attention on the man before him.
The pair of fleshy wings on the man’s back barely flapped, yet he remained suspended steadily in the air. It was, admittedly, a bit magical.
"Tell me your name."
Veselar sneered. "You want to know my name? Beat me first!"
His wings suddenly vibrated, and he shot toward Duane at a terrifying speed.
Veselar raised his hand, forming a claw. His fingernails instantly grew long and razor-sharp, and his skin took on a metallic sheen, as if he were wearing gauntlets.
CLANG!
The Long Spear collided with his palm, actually producing the sound of striking metal.
’This guy is strange.’
To be safe, Duane activated his Scale Armor Defense, and translucent white scales materialized on his skin.
Veselar threw a punch, and the air in front of him caved in, as if he had fired an air cannon.
Duane thrusted his spear, and the light of Rainbow Piercing flashed past.
This time, his usually invincible Spear Skill merely nullified his opponent’s attack, and the force of the impact knocked them both back several hundred meters.
"Heh, I heard you were strong, but you don’t seem like much to me!"
Having made a preliminary judgment of his enemy’s strength, Veselar flapped his fleshy wings furiously, filling the air with afterimages.
"Few Ascension Level Warriors can survive this move of mine!"
His voice came from all directions, his figure appeared everywhere, as if he had used a Clone Technique.
Duane sneered.
The illusions were incredibly realistic, even carrying the aura of the original body. But he had the Starlight Eye, and in his sight, all falsehoods were revealed.
Mountain Collapse!
High-Pressure Fighting Qi condensed on the tip of his spear as he smashed it toward his opponent’s true body.
"How did you...?"
Veselar had just finished boasting, but in the next second, Duane taught him a harsh lesson.
Faced with this unavoidable strike, he could only change his tactics. He stirred the Wind Attribute Fighting Qi around him, wrapping himself in it to form a barrier-like sphere.
The spear tip struck the cyan sphere violently, and Fighting Qi erupted with the force of a collapsing mountain!
RUMBLE~
The spear shattered the sphere in a single blow, and the aftershock sent Veselar plummeting toward the ground.
"Hmph. I thought you were so tough, but you’re nothing special after all!"
Duane gripped his Long Spear and dove down from the sky, the weapon tracing a cold arc of light in the sun.
Veselar’s falling body tumbled wildly through the air, but his strange, fleshy wings suddenly began to vibrate at a high frequency, forcefully stabilizing him just thirty meters above the ground.
"I underestimated you!"
He drew the Longsword from his waist and shot up to meet the diving Duane.
The Long Spear and Longsword clashed violently in mid-air, creating a deafening series of collisions.
Because the two were fighting close to the ground, the energy released from each collision ravaged the earth below. It was a good thing no troops were stationed here, or the shockwaves would have caused immense casualties.
After hundreds, perhaps thousands, of clashes, Duane could clearly tell that his opponent’s Swordsmanship wasn’t particularly good. However, the man clearly had experience fighting Lancers. He used his superior speed to constantly close the distance, restricting Duane’s movements.
If his Spear Skill weren’t so superb, Veselar would have already forced him into a position where he couldn’t even adjust his angle of attack.
’In that case...’
Duane used the force of a blow to retreat a few steps, tossed aside his Long Spear, and grasped the Tang Blade he had forged.
When Veselar saw Duane switch weapons, he assumed his opponent had been forced into a corner, unable to fight effectively. A wave of smugness washed over him. "Are you a juggler now?"
The two clashed again. The moment they engaged, Veselar felt a surge of vicious killing intent.
Without the disadvantage of a long weapon at close quarters, Duane’s attacks instantly became incomparably sharp, each blow heavier than the last.
"Hah!" Not wanting to be suppressed any longer, Veselar erupted with a full-power strike.
But Duane’s Thunderous Triple Slash was already fully charged, and the strike he now unleashed was the third and final slash.
Thunder cracked by his ears as a violent, pale-white current carrying terrifying Power of Destruction shattered his opponent’s technique and slammed into his chest.
GWAH!
Veselar violently spat out a mouthful of blood. His body fell to the ground like a kite with a snapped string, smashing a large crater into the earth.
Duane quickly gave chase, his Tang Blade tracing a sharp silver glint as he thrust it straight at Veselar’s chest.
Veselar wretchedly scrambled backward, kicking off the ground to barely create some distance.
However, Duane’s strike was a feint. The trajectory of the blade suddenly shifted, slicing down at an angle, aiming for the base of his opponent’s right wing.
KRAK!
The crisp sound of breaking bone was heard. Veselar let out a muffled grunt as his entire right wing was sliced clean off, sending a foul-smelling spray of blood into the air.
Duane gave Veselar no chance to breathe.
He could afford to capture people like Eldrin because they posed no real threat to him.
But when facing an Ascension Level enemy, he had to kill them, or there would be endless trouble in the future.
SWISH!
Duane’s figure closed in again like a phantom, plunging his blade into Veselar’s heart.
Veselar grunted as if heavily injured, but an Ascension Level Warrior wouldn’t die just from having their heart pierced.
Just as Duane was about to channel lightning to make his opponent’s body explode, the man actually grabbed the Tang Blade. A dark green energy surged from his body and melted the blade!
Veselar revealed a hideous grin. "You think... this is enough to kill me?!"
The dark green energy completely enveloped Duane. Countless tentacles tore at him, trying to drag him toward his foe.
"Come, become a part of my body!"
Veselar roared madly, "By devouring such a perfect physical body, my power will increase enormously!"
Duane’s expression was icy. The moment he saw the color of this energy, he thought of Fel Energy, and of Daniels, the leader of the Holy Hand Association whom he had killed shortly after arriving on Black Forest Island.
He had always found it strange. Daniels was merely a Level 3 Mage who had fled to Black Forest Island to save his own skin.
He possessed neither great power nor the outstanding creativity of someone like Louis.
How could he have invented something as evil as the "Sauce Meat Fruit"? How could he have created his own Fel Energy Magic?
He had heard back then that Daniels came from the direction of the Starfall Islands. Now, it seemed that the Fel Energy Notes were likely connected to the Royal Family of Akutas.
"Come, come!"
The grin on Veselar’s face grew more hideous, his voice like a somniloquent whisper, bewitching the mind of his prey.
Enveloped by this strange, devouring energy, the prey would gradually lose themselves—just as Duane appeared to be doing now.
The distance between the two gradually closed.
Duane could indeed feel his control over his body being affected, but it was mainly concentrated in his legs, forcing him to step toward his opponent.
At the same time, he could feel his Spirit being torn at by something, and the headache was so intense he couldn’t help but frown.
But all of this was surmountable.
Seeing that his opponent seemed to have let down his guard, he decided to play along and continued walking forward, step by step.
Just as Veselar’s eyes widened, about to complete the devouring, Duane suddenly shot out his left hand and seized him by the throat.
"You!"
Veselar’s hideous grin froze on his face. He stared at Duane in disbelief. "Impossible! How can you resist the Ancient God’s Whisper?"
A cold smile touched Duane’s lips.
’So you’re a product of the Secret Realm’s corruption.’
No wonder his Spirit had been affected.
It was just that after killing the Black Bear in the Secret Realm, he had gained the ability to resist the Ancient God’s Whisper.
For Veselar to use this move against Duane was pure suicide.
Duane tightened his grip, gradually twisting the man’s neck. Veselar found it hard to breathe, and he frantically pummeled Duane with his fists.
Punch after punch, surging Fighting Qi slammed into Duane’s body, but his Scale Armor Defense allowed him to barely withstand the damage.
He also noticed that his opponent’s Strength was weakening with each blow.
PFFT!
Duane produced a new Longsword and thrust it through his opponent’s heart.
Lightning erupted, rampaging through his Meridians!
With a final BOOM, Veselar’s body was torn apart from the inside out, turning into countless chunks of flesh that fell to the ground.
