Chapter 2556: Longevity

Chapter 2556: Longevity

The moment Yuan and Officer Mei appeared in Sector 18, they could feel vibrations in the air, as well as noticeably shaking in the ground, as if there were an active earthquake.

"What is going on?" Yuan asked as he continued running behind Officer Mei.

"There appears to be an ongoing fight," she replied.

"..."

Yuan was left speechless by the cause of the incident, as he had expected something much worse given her urgency.

Once they arrived at the scene, Yuan quickly realized that it was even worse than he had imagined.

Due to the cultivation-suppressing formations that enveloped the entire city, the two people involved could only throw ordinary punches and kicks. Not only were they unable to use any techniques, but they fought as though neither had ever been in a fight before.

Yuan visibly cringed at how ridiculous the scene looked. When he turned to Officer Mei, she was already charging toward the two fighters with a solemn expression.

"Hey! Both of you! Stop it!" she shouted.

However, they completely ignored her and continued throwing wild attacks at one another.

Seeing this, Officer Mei’s expression darkened.

The moment she reached them, she threw two powerful punches, each landing squarely in their stomachs. The impact forced both men to their knees, clutching their abdomens as their faces twisted in pain.

Then, without a word, she restrained them in the same golden binding that she used to restraint Yuan before.

After being restrained, the two fighters quickly calmed down.

"So, why were the two of you fighting?" Officer Mei questioned them.

"He bumped into me," one of them said.

"No! HE bumped into me!" the other one immediately refuted.

"..."

Officer Mei rubbed her eyes and sighed out loud, "I will give you two choices. One, I remove your restraints, and the two of you shake hands and walk away, or two... I bring you back to the station and write you down, which will result in a loss of credentials. Which would you prefer?"

The two men stared at each other for a moment before responding, "One..."

Officer Mei released their restraints and watched them shake hands before parting ways as if nothing had happened.

"What was that about?" Yuan remarked with a dumbfounded face.

"What do you mean? Were you expecting something else?" Officer Mei looked at him with raised eyebrows.

"Honestly, I was. You had such a serious expression on your face that I thought something major had happened."

"Something major? Like what?"

Yuan shook his head and said, "Never mind."

He then looked at the sky and continued, "Can I ask you about the formation that suppresses our cultivation? What is its purpose?"

"Isn’t it obvious? It’s to protect this world from ourselves," she quickly replied.

"Take those two idiots just now, for example. If they had access to their cultivation, their little scuffle could’ve been disastrous."

"That makes sense..." Yuan nodded.

Despite the humorous fight they had just been engaged in, the two men possessed cultivation bases Yuan could not see through. Had they used their power recklessly and without restraint, they could have easily destroyed the entire city.

Moreover, Yuan had done the same thing on his own Earth, restricting everyone’s cultivation so they wouldn’t accidentally destroy the world with their newfound powers.

Yuan stared at the sky in silence, a pondering expression on his face.

"What are you thinking about now?" Officer Mei asked, her interest piqued by his expression.

"I am wondering why everyone cultivates if they cannot even use their power," Yuan replied. "Hell, I would not even call it cultivation when their strength improves without them needing to do anything. Is it simply to live longer, perhaps?"

"Huh? What are you talking about?" Officer Mei muttered with a puzzled look on her face. "How does improving our cultivation increase our longevity?"

"What?"

It was Yuan’s turn to be confused.

"Let me get something straight... Your longevity doesn’t increase alongside your cultivation?" Yuan asked for confirmation.

"Of course not," she replied, sounding like she was only stating the obvious.

’So despite possessing such high cultivation, it does not affect their longevity? Is this the consequence of cultivating entirely through the system?’ Yuan wondered inwardly after learning this surprising information.

"Uh... What is the average lifespan in this world?" Yuan then asked.

"About three to five hundred years. However, a few individuals have lived for as long as a thousand."

"I see... So it is still much longer than an ordinary mortal’s lifespan, but compared to cultivators, it is basically nothing."

"What on earth are you talking about?" Officer Mei inquired.

"Believe it or not, but the cultivators in my world can live for tens of thousands of years with ease, and once we reach a certain cultivation realm, we basically become immortal."

"What?! Immortal?!" Officer Mei exclaimed in disbelief. "That’s the most outrageous thing you’ve said to date!"

Yuan shrugged and said, "Many people in my world cultivate for immortality."

"H-How does it work?" Officer Mei asked in a nervous voice.

"Do you remember when your mother cultivated manually and called it inefficient? That is how the cultivators in my world all cultivate."

"What...? You can increase your longevity if you cultivate like that?" Officer Mei muttered in a daze. "But it barely improves our cultivation... In fact, most of us would long perish before we even increase our cultivation by a single level if we used that method."

"That’s because you’ve inflated your cultivation with the system’s assistance." Yuan shook his head.

After a slight pause, he added, "That being said, this is just my speculation."

"Is that so? Anyway, let’s get back to work." Officer Mei said.

The two continued patrolling the city between the 10th and 19th Sectors and, over the next several days, encountered more incidents. Yet most of them were either fights or arguments sparked by the slightest provocations.

’This world... is quite peaceful,’ Yuan thought to himself.

Meanwhile, somewhere within the boundless Starry Sky, a massive figure that had been slumbering for countless years suddenly opened their eyes and muttered in a puzzled voice, "My system was destroyed...? Who could’ve done it?"

After a moment of silence, they turned toward the Nine Heavens with narrowed eyes and wondered inwardly, ’This wasn’t supposed to happen! What went wrong? Who intervened with my plans? I need to find out!’
