Chapter 4461: A Gamble

Chapter 4461: A Gamble

One mote of light after another shot out from the Divine King's body to circle around Nightflow God's light. Immediately, Nightflow God's light dimmed further, and it even started to flicker constantly.

At that moment, the Divine Queen arrived. “Divine King, find out the truth first.”

Only then did the Divine King withdraw the motes of light.

Nightflow God said in a trembling voice, “Thank you, Divine King. Thank you, Divine Queen.”

Although the Divine Queen's tone was gentle, it also carried an unmistakable chill. “You better tell us everything you know. We have tolerated your interactions with Obscura all this time, but that does not mean that we cannot kill you. We do not know how strong Obscura truly is, but we are also a fishing civilization. No civilization in the Aevum Inch can afford to ignore the Divine King's true strength. You had better recognize that.”

“Move!” the Divine King barked sharply. He then turned and left, no longer paying any attention to Joy City.

One god after another followed, leaving the battlefield.

The Divine Realm had suffered terrible losses. Countless beings in the civilization had died, three gods had been killed, and even their native megaverse’s Mother Tree had been cut down. It was not that the Divine Realm did not want to pursue Joy City, but rather that it lacked the strength to do so.

Nightflow God still felt a lingering fear. It also had no idea why Obscura had appeared within the Divine Realm. It had not been the one to initiate contact with Obscura, and it was also unable to contact Obscura on its own. Nightflow God could only wait.

It also did not know what had happened to Bestowal God.

It was time to make a choice.

Joy City moved far away from the Divine Realm. Everything in the city was focused on recovery. No matter how great their losses may have been, recovery took place even faster.

The thunderous roar of violent music was no different from before, but two Immortals had died. There was no way that no one cared about that.

Lu Yin stared at the castle in the distance. What was Withered Requiem thinking right now?

The Death Megaverse had seven great Abysses. On its own, Joy City was no match for the Divine Realm. Did this mean that the other Abysses would be summoned? If that happened, would Lu Yin’s human civilization be dragged into things as well?

The Keeper of Balance was preventing Obscura from initiating another war, avoiding a forced conscription so that humanity's protection period under Obscura would run out. At the same time, Lu Yin was trying to think of ways to trigger another war so that he could extend the Trio’s protection time.

He had once thought that 1,000 years was a very long time. Only now did he realize how incredibly short it was. At the moment, there were two ways to deal with the Keeper of Balance's schemes. One was to trade with other members of Obscura in exchange for their protection. The other was to trigger a war to gain protection from every member.

Compared to the first option, Lu Yin would rather initiate a war. Given his methods, he was confident that he could survive against any civilization. Even if he failed to gain any rewards, surviving should not be too difficult. However, if the other Obscura members were allowed to benefit, no one knew what the final outcome might be.

But a war that forced Obscura to initiate a conscription was not something that could be triggered at will. Leaving Obscura’s internal politics aside for the moment, if Lu Yin wanted to push Obscura into a war, there were only three possible targets that he could choose from: the technological fishing civilization, the Divine Realm, and the Death Megaverse.

The technological fishing civilization and the Divine Realm both fell somewhat short of being strong enough. Neither truly qualified to force Obscura to go to war. At this point, only the Death Megaverse seemed suitable.

Joy City had been wandering around in the nearby Aevum Inch. Lu Yin had lured it toward the Divine Realm, and there was a strong chance that Joy City would pull over the other Abysses. No matter what, the Death Megaverse would arrive sooner or later. Since that was the case, he might as well target the Death Megaverse for a war with Obscura. Of course, the Divine Realm should not think about escaping either. The more forces that were pulled in, the easier it would be for Lu Yin to fish in troubled waters.

He was also afraid of losing control of the situation, but there was no other choice. The Death Megaverse would definitely arrive, and the Divine Realm would undoubtedly remain an enemy. Obscura was a mortal enemy, and it had to be weakened. That was the current situation. If Lu Yin did nothing, humanity would end up being swallowed whole.

He could only play a big game with all of these powerful forces. If that was still not enough... He looked in one direction. Far away lay the Plume Immortals, but that was the final line, and he was unwilling to cross it. Aside from Obscura, the civilization most hostile to the Plume Immortals was humanity itself.

Not one of them would get away.

Ending the Possession, Lu Yin teleported again and again to make his way back, ultimately arriving in front of the Ten-Eyed Divine Crow.

The Divine Realm’s massive Mother Tree had provided him with quite a lot of motes of light. This time, he should finally have enough.

With that thought, he covered his entire body with green light. He raised a hand to touch one of the Ten-Eyed Divine Crow's eyes.

Heaven's Sight opened, and his body was forcibly turned around. Lu Yin gritted his teeth and, with the help of the green motes of light, resisted the movement. His fingertip turned icy cold, and a familiar sensation flowed into Heaven's Sight. At that moment, only one eye remained on the Divine Crow.

The eye had merged into Heaven's Sight again. Lu Yin had already suspected that the eye would do so, and his guess was proven true.

However, Heaven's Sight itself did not change. Rather, when he looked in a certain direction with Heaven's Sight, crisscrossing black lines suddenly appeared in his vision. This was the range of Crow Immobilization. The next instant, those crisscrossing black lines suddenly spun, causing the dark path to become blurred. This was Crow Reversal.

This ability could force an opponent to turn around, and it did not require eye contact. Anyone would be forced to turn around unless the opponent was terrifyingly stronger than Lu Yin. Even those who were somewhat stronger than him would not be able to break free.

Lu Yin was thrilled, and he immediately teleported over to Ba Rong. The fish stared at Lu Yin in a daze. “Hello.”

Lu Yin smiled at it, and Ba Rong felt a chill in its heart. Then crisscrossing black lines appeared around it. What is this thing?

Lu Yin did not use Crow Immobilization, instead directly rotating the crisscrossing black lines. Ba Rong turned around, and its field of vision flipped upside down.

Its mouth fell open. What the hell is this?

It turned to stare at Lu Yin. “Has the cosmos turned upside down?”

Lu Yin burst out laughing and caused the crisscrossing black lines to rotate again, but Ba Rong did not move. The fish simply continued to stare at him blankly.

Lu Yin frowned and continued trying.

After some time, he had no choice but to accept the truth: there was a flaw to Crow Reversal. The ability could not be used twice on the same creature within a certain period of time. Crow Immobilization did not have this limitation, but Crow Immobilization required eye contact.

There truly was no invincible innate gift in existence. Even the innate gifts of the Ten-Eyed Divine Crow, which had been called the pinnacle of innate gifts, was still subject to this limitation.

Lu Yin did not know whether he should feel relieved or something else, but such limitations were only natural. If an innate gift had no limitations, then the Divine Crow would have truly been invincible.

Forget three Rampart Wardens—even several more might not have been able to take the bird down.

The cosmos might appear to be fair, but in truth, it was not. Some beings were born strong while others were as insignificant as ants. But beneath that unfairness, there also had to be some fairness. Those who were born strong found progressive breakthroughs much harder while those who were born weak often had extremely high potential. Some beings possessed extremely powerful innate gifts, but those also came with flaws. It was balanced.

Lu Yin was not disappointed. At the very least, Crow Reversal could give him one chance to seize the initiative, and in many situations, that alone was enough.

At this time, there were roughly 700 years remaining before the Trio’s protection period from Obscura expired. It was actually a very short span of time. Lu Yin had been waiting for the Divine Realm and Joy City to go to war, but now that the war was over, what came next depended on whether he could also trigger a forced war for Obscura.

First, he needed to confirm Joy City's location. Earlier, he had made some guesses regarding its speed and position, but if Joy City had changed direction at some point, its position would be wrong, so he needed to verify it again.

Lu Yin teleported repeatedly until he drew near to where Joy City should be. Then, he rolled his die.

Not long after, he Possessed a skeleton in Joy City. Memories flooded in. Mm, it hasn’t changed direction.

He was just about to end the Possession when Lu Yin suddenly stared at two figures in the distance. He was stunned. Why are they here?

The two figures who had appeared before Lu Yin's eyes were Zhu and Yong Heng. The two were supposed to be sleeping in a parallel universe in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, and yet they were somehow outside of Joy City's castle.

He stared in a daze as Zhu and Yong Heng walked towards the castle. Even though Lu Yin was staring at them, because he was a skeleton and lacked any eyes to speak of, the two could not tell that he was watching them despite passing by right in front of him.

“We cannot get in. To meet this Abyss, we have to rely on music to enter the castle,” Zhu explained. They had already tried to enter the castle. They had also kept their promise, having brought Yong Heng along, but it was simply impossible to get inside.

Yong Heng calmly replied, “There is no rush. We will meet eventually.”

Zhu said, “I am only afraid that, if we get too far away, we will no longer be able to find the location of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse.”

“Joy City has just fought a war. No one here will ever forget this location,” Yong Heng commented.

As they spoke, they moved farther and farther away.

Lu Yin maintained the same posture the entire time, trying his best not to reveal anything unusual.

After the two had gone far enough away, he quickly ended the Possession and then silently continued rolling the die. Again and again, again and again, he Possessed the skeletons of Joy City as he wanted to Possess Zhu to confirm the suspicions that he had just formed.

But targeting Zhu with Possession was not easy. After all, there were countless skeletons living in Joy City, and Zhu was only one of them. Success required luck.

In that case, Lu Yin would overcome luck with time.

One day, two years later, Lu Yin finally Possessed Zhu. Memories flooded in, and he saw what had happened. It’s him. It really is him.

He was not surprised. It was obvious, and yet it should not have been so obvious. It was as though he had always been standing in plain sight but no one had been able to believe the truth.

Scene after scene from the past emerged. Everything had happened too early, so early that, even with such obvious signs, Lu Yin had not been able to believe that it was actually him.

Before this, his suspicion had only been eight parts out of ten, but now, the final two parts had fallen into place.

This was why Wang Miaomiao had willingly betrayed humanity and followed him; her identity doomed her to stand with him.

Zhu and Yong Heng had been brought to the Abyss during the war between Joy City and the Divine Realm. Their appearance meant that the Keeper of Balance was already moving against the Trio and that he intended to pull the Death Megaverse over. At the same time, while Obscura was refusing to launch any new wars, the Trio would lose its protection. Every step was intended to push the Trio into the abyss.

Lu Yin ended the Possession and teleported back to the Human Trio. There, the first person he sought out was Xiang Siyu. He asked her to enter seclusion together with him.

“Go into seclusion together?” Xiang Siyu gave Lu Yin a strange look. “Really, just seclusion?”

Lu Yin's expression remained solemn. “You only need to sit beside me. Although I do not know whether your luck can help me, I have no other choice.”

Xiang Siyu heard the seriousness in his tone and nodded. “If you need me, I am ready at any time.”

“Thank you.” Lu Yin brought Xiang Siyu to where he went into seclusion in the Tianyuan. After greeting Long Xi, he had Xiang Siyu sit beside him and then released Qian Shu. “How many ‘luck’ characters have you finished?”

Qian Shu replied, “Still just three. The fourth is very hard to write.”

“Give them to me.”

Qian Shu was once again sent into the Zenith Mountain while Lu Yin placed the three “luck” characters around himself on three sides. Let this be a great gamble.

While Lu Yin had never spoken directly with the Keeper of Balance, he understood his methods all too well. He had stopped Obscura from initiating another war and had delivered Zhu and Yong Heng to Joy City. Every move was carefully calculated to destroy human civilization, so what would the next step be? What would humanity face once Obscura's protection period expired? Lu Yin could not even imagine.

Since he could not foresee the future, he would stake everything on this next gamble.
