Chapter 4472: The Root Of Everything

Chapter 4472: The Root Of Everything

The Dao Sword slashed straight at the giant skeleton. Death's Dominion’s hand paused. Black light expanded from the plaza once more, and it spread up the entire arm.

As the Dao Sword came slashing down, a palm struck sideways.

The Dao Sword... shattered.

Lu Yin’s pupils shrank. How is that possible?

He knew that supreme powerhouses could break a Dao Sword formed from karma, but he had never expected it to be done so easily. The skeleton might as well have just swatted aside an ordinary sword.

That was the power of karma.

“You can use karma too? Human, I am becoming more and more interested in you. Join me, and I will grant you immortality.” Death's Dominion’s voice shook the cosmos. Black light spread over the entire Nine Odysseys Megaverse and then continued on to the Spirit Nidus and the Tianyuan.

In the Tianyuan, the Divine King’s radiance surged. Countless specks of light formed a curtain that pushed forward, forcibly blocking Death's Dominion’s black radiance, splitting the Human Trio into black and white portions.

Beneath the black light, countless people stared up at the sky in a daze. Many cultivators did not even fight back as they were killed by skeletons, seemingly having become idiots.

Beneath the white light, clocks appeared above countless heads, each one slowly turning. When the hands reached a certain position, everyone in the Tianyuan acted in perfect unison. It was terrifyingly strange.

Even Ancient God and Jiang Feng, who were in the Tianyuan, were no exception.

Only Mister Mu and Chu Songyun were barely able to hold out with the help of their guardian artifacts. But even then, above their heads, a clock faintly flickered in and out of view.

“Stand down!” Death's Dominion shouted sternly at the Divine King.

The Divine King irritatedly replied, “You stand down!”

“I will deal with this civilization.”

“It is not your place.”

Ba Rong trembled, continuously shrinking back to avoid danger. It was all over. These were utterly terrifying monsters. Just how many powerful beings had this civilization offended?

The Trio was locked in battle. Death's Dominion and the Divine King were the most dazzling participants while beneath them were numerous beings from both the Death Megaverse and the Divine Realm. Blood flooded the megaverses like an endless sea.

Progenitor Chen struck at Nightflow God with Star Fist, but Nightflow God easily dissolved the attack. It was not an ordinary Immortal while Progenitor Chen was, at best, an Aberrant.

In the Spirit Nidus, Master Qing Cao stared blankly at the gate. It had failed. Humanity’s last hope was gone.

In the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, three lines of divine energy merged within Lu Yin’s inner universe: tri-color divine energy transformation.

The roiling tri-color divine energy shot high into the sky.

Death's Dominion grew even more surprised. “To think that you can master even this power to such an extent... Human, I truly admire you. I grant you the right to enter my Death Megaverse without becoming a skeleton.

“As for your civilization, it may join as well, needing merely to alter its form of life. With that, it may even remain under your rule. This is the best treatment that I can offer you.”

Tearing open the cocoon of divine energy with one hand, Lu Yin emerged. By now, his control over tri-color divine energy had become far more relaxed. Unlike his earlier transformations, the divine energy now no longer replaced his sense of reason with overwhelming bloodlust.

The churning sea of tri-color divine energy surged out, spreading continuously to add a third color to the Trio, resisting both the black and white light.

Death's Dominion spoke again, saying, “You are not my opponent.”

Lu Yin knew that was true. This giant skeleton was a peak two-law Immortal whereas Lu Yin was not yet even an Immortal.

However, that did not mean that destroying the Trio would be easy for Death's Dominion.

Lu Yin looked up at the giant skeleton, and then his gaze suddenly turned to the Tianyuan. “Get out here! WANG WEN!”

His sharp cry echoed throughout all of the megaverses, stunning countless people. They could not believe what they heard. Wang Wen? What does that mean? What does this war have to do with Wang Wen? And why is Lord Lu so furious? What has Wang Wen done?

In the Tianyuan, light swept past Skydog’s back. Wang Xiaoyu and Forgotten Ruins God slowly turned their heads to look, and there he was, Wang Wen. There was a faint smile on his face as he looked at the Nine Odysseys Megaverse and Lu Yin. “So, you are finally willing to face me...”

From the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, Lu Yin stared at Wang Wen, his gaze crossing the Trio. He clenched both fists, the sea of energy behind him boiling while his scythe continuously converted Stillness to protect the Nine Odysseys Megaverse and the Spirit Nidus.

His terrifying aura caused even the void to distort so much that even Dukkhans were hardly able to see clearly.

“Get out here!” Lu Yin shouted again. With a casual wave of his hand, he tore the cosmos open, the tear directly extending to before Wang Wen.

The man did not move. Skydog was terrified. It felt an incomparable power descending, only for it to instantly dissipate, unable to draw close to Wang Wen.

In the Tianyuan, the Divine King, Nightflow God, and all the others stopped fighting to look over at Wang Wen. Was this Obscura’s Keeper of Balance?

All along, the Divine Realm had been used. They had some understanding of Obscura and knew of the Keeper of Balance, but they had never known who that actually was. Not even Nightflow God had known.

At this moment, they all saw him.

At this moment, the Divine King revealed killing intent toward Wang Wen, but only for an instant. Even if the Divine King could kill the Keeper of Balance, what of it? They would still have to face all of Obscura. Rather than that, it was far more important that the Divine Realm leave, departing for another region of the Aevum Inch.

This entire region was far too dangerous.

The Death Megaverse also stopped fighting at this moment. Death's Dominion turned to face Wang Wen. Facing this individual was an entirely different matter from facing Lu Yin. This Keeper of Balance was unfathomable.

A smile lingered on Wang Wen’s mouth. Space and time twisted around him, and with Skydog, Forgotten Ruins God, and Wang Xiaoyu, he instantly arrived in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, right before Lu Yin. “Your Royal Chesspiece, how much longer can you endure this game?”

Lu Yin stared at Wang Wen. This person was incomparably familiar, and Lu Yin had trusted him beyond measure.

That was right, Wang Wen was Obscura’s Keeper of Balance. The very person who had sealed off the Human Trio’s potential and who, at this moment, had brought Lu Yin and all of human civilization to the edge of despair.

When had Lu Yin first started suspecting Wang Wen? He did not know himself. It might have been when, at the Stargazing Deck, he had seen all those floating coffins. Or perhaps it was when Greater Sancte Green Lotus and the others mentioned that each member of Obscura corresponded to a color. Or maybe when Wang Wen had analyzed the macroscopic situation of the cosmos for Lu Yin with an astonishing level of insight, the sort of insight that should not be possible for a mere Envoy to have.

Lu Yin truly did not know, but from the moment that suspicion had first been born to the moment that it had been confirmed, he had not felt the slightest surprise.

Not even a little.

It was as if Wang Wen was simply the kind of person who could be the Keeper of Balance. He laid out wars, planned the future, and remained safe even in the face of endless dangers. It was as if nothing could break his transparent floating coffin. Yes, he had once said that the transparent coffin had been given to him by the Hall of Honor, but given the level of the Hall of Honor, that coffin should have never been enough to let Wang Wen survive the many dangers that had come later.

Chaotic thoughts flashed through Lu Yin’s mind as he looked at Wang Wen’s familiar yet unfamiliar face. He recalled many things that they had said, though such memories were not recent recollections. Lu Yin had mulled over them all during his hundreds of years in Joy City, especially after Possessing Zhu and seeing that Wang Wen had thrown them and Yong Heng into Joy City.

“Dao Monarch Chesspiece, sometimes thinking too much isn’t a good thing. It can instead cause you to lose your greatest advantage.

“If the fisherman is very hungry and there is only one fish in the lake, but then another very hungry fisherman arrives, what do you think those two fishermen should do most?

“I prefer to wait for opportunity to come to me, to let the willing take the bait. Sometimes life is like a lock, fastening us tightly in place. Mortals have the suffering of mortals, and cultivators have the burdens of cultivators. No one has it easy, not even Immortal beings.

“Looking at the entire chessboard, the countdown to death has never stopped, whether it was seen or unseen. Dao Monarch Chesspiece, how much longer do you think you can hold out in this game?”

Such words had been said too many times over the years. Lu Yin had shared countless conversations with Wang Wen, and they had played too many games of chess against each other.

Lu Yin had lost more than he had won.

At this moment, using cosmic civilizations as chess pieces and life and death as the outcome, they were once again playing a game.

How much longer could Lu Yin endure this game?

“Why is it you?” Lu Yin’s voice was dry.

Wang Wen smiled. “Why would it not be me?”

“I hoped that it wouldn’t be you.”

“I’m sorry, but hope can’t change reality. And since the very beginning, it was always me. That has never changed.”

Lu Yin slowly stated, “Because your surname is Wang.”

Wang Wen smiled. “Yes, because my surname is Wang.”

Behind him, Forgotten Ruins God closed her eyes. Yes, Wang Wen was the ancestor of the Wang family. His surname was Wang, which meant that, from the very beginning, Wang Miaomiao had been his person, his descendant.

During the era of the Heavens Sect, everyone had believed Wang Miaomiao to be the Wang family’s founding ancestor, but that assumption had always been wrong. The true ancestor of the Wang family was Wang Wen, and he had been there all along.

He was also the one Wang Xiaoyu had been searching for, the one who had plotted against the entire Tianyuan Megaverse.

The ending had been decided from the very beginning, and no one could change it. Wang Wen had been born far, far earlier than the Origin Progenitor. If he had wished it, the Tianyuan would have vanished long ago, and nothing in its history would have ever happened. But those events no longer affected him now.

“You remained in the Tianyuan Megaverse all this time to wait for Hong Shuang, didn’t you?” Lu Yin said.

Wang Wen nodded. “That’s right. Hong Shuang went into the Mirari Realm. I’ve searched for her many times, but I could never find her. She is not a simple person. If she doesn’t want to come out, then she has either taken the one-way path of regressing to the ancient era, or she is waiting for an opportunity. So...”

His smile suddenly grew brighter. “I gave her that opportunity.”

“That is why the Heavens Sect’s glory came to be,” Lu Yin finished for him.

Wang Wen nodded. “I granted the Heavens Sect its glory, but that glory was not enough to draw out Hong Shuang. So, I gave you Yong Heng as well.”

Yong Heng had been created by Wang Wen. His implanted bones had contained the power of the Death Megaverse, his flesh and blood had come from humanity, and his bloodline originated from Obscura’s divine energy. That was why Yong Heng had betrayed humanity in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, betrayed the Netherfiends, betrayed Stillness, and ultimately gone to the Tianyuan and destroyed the Heavens Sect.

Wang Wen had arranged everything in silence. If Yong Heng had simply been born in the Tianyuan, Hong Shuang would have been alerted. This showed Wang Wen’s caution, and that was why everything following those events had come to pass.

“Yong Heng overthrew the Heavens Sect and brought disaster to the Tianyuan. There were, of course, unexpected elements along the way, such as that Mi Jin, your master Mister Mu, and others, but their appearance just made everything more exciting, more real.” Wang Wen let out an emotional sigh. “When preparing a scheme, having everything go smoothly is actually not ideal. Only with surprises can you enjoy true delight. Isn’t that so?”

“But Hong Shuang still did not appear.” Lu Yin said.

Wang Wen sounded helpless. “That’s true, she didn’t appear. I considered that she might have regressed to the ancient era, but I can’t rashly assume that. What if I were wrong? What if she created the illusion of regressing to the ancient era in order to lure me down that line of thinking? It would not be easy for me to return.

“In truth, that is the primary reason why Hong Shuang left during the Nine Ramparts war and went into the Mirari Realm. She is very clever. She knew that I would make a move, so she lured me away in advance. Otherwise, the Nine Ramparts would have met an even worse fate.” As he spoke, Wang Wen glanced at Death's Dominion.
