Chapter 3846: Frequency Transmission Technique
Lin Mu kept reading.
The technique worked best in a completely open area with an uninterrupted path between the sender and recipient. Even then, the practitioner needed to calculate how the sound would disperse.
Curved corridors were possible as the practitioner could bounce the frequency off walls. But that required even more calculations. The angle of the wall needed to be considered. The material needed to be considered.
Stone reflected sound differently from wood and Metal created additional problems. Lin Mu reached the section concerning enclosed rooms.
He paused. "If you’re in a closed room, you basically can’t transmit outside."
"Correct."
"Then, shouting would work better."
"Correct."
Lin Mu stared at the stone plate. "A sound transmission technique that’s sometimes worse than shouting."
"It was impressive for its era."
Lin Mu could not argue with that.
The effective range was another major limitation. A beginner could transmit their voice ten or twenty meters. An experienced practitioner might reach a hundred meters without significant strain. While a master could reach several hundred meters.
According to the records, the absolute limit was roughly a thousand meters.
And even that required perfect environmental conditions like no obstacles, minimal wind, precise calculations and complete mastery of the skill itself. Lin Mu initially wondered if greater cultivation could extend the range.
The manual directly answered his question... it could not.
At least the improvement was insignificant.
The limitation came from physics as the frequency eventually dispersed and the vibrations weakened. Maintaining the precise concentration needed for the transmission became impossible after a certain distance.
A stronger cultivator could shout loudly enough to be heard tens of kilometers away. That did not help the Frequency Transmission Technique. The entire purpose was secrecy. Increasing the power too much destroyed the delicate frequency control and turned the transmission into ordinary sound.
Lin Mu finally understood. "Primitive really is the right word."
"And ancient," Xukong added.
Lin Mu looked at the original characters again.
"When was this created?"
"During the earliest age of organized cultivation," Xukong replied. "Before Qi cultivation became widespread."
Lin Mu’s eyes narrowed. "The age of body cultivation."
"Indeed."
Lin Mu suddenly understood why the technique existed in the Wild Peak’s library. This was originally a body cultivation skill. During that ancient age, cultivators lacked jade slips. Qi Sense had either not been developed or was inaccessible to most people.
Other transmission methods like talismans did not exist either.
Yet cultivators still needed ways to communicate secretly as hunters needed to coordinate, warriors needed to give commands and scouts needed to relay information without alerting beasts or enemies.
Someone had created the Frequency Transmission Technique.
Lin Mu imagined ancient body cultivators hiding within a forest while hunting a powerful beast. They could not shout, they had no jade slips and they had no Qi transmission methods.
So they controlled their vocal cords and sent carefully directed frequencies toward their companions.
For that era, the technique must have been revolutionary.
"People probably fought over this technique once," Lin Mu said.
"Entire kingdoms might have killed each other for it," Xukong replied.
Lin Mu looked around.
Now it sat on a shelf beside the Gentle Door Opening Technique. Time truly changed the value of things. Once Qi cultivation developed, the Frequency Transmission Technique became obsolete.
Qi Sense transmission was easier, faster and more reliable. The range depended upon cultivation and even that could be improved. Walls were less troublesome. Jade slips improved communication even further.
Eventually, no one had a reason to spend years mastering an incredibly complicated method of manipulating their vocal cords.
Lin Mu continued reading as the calculations were extensive. There were hundreds of frequency tables, environmental correction methods, distance formulas, air density adjustments and even the shape of the practitioner’s mouth affected the transmission.
"This is absurdly difficult," Lin Mu muttered.
"For most people."
Lin Mu paused as he understood Xukong’s meaning. Lin Mu possessed the Absolute Body Control Art. The greatest difficulty of the Frequency Transmission Technique was controlling the vocal cords.
Lin Mu could manipulate individual muscles, he could adjust his organs, he could control his heartbeat and he could force blood through particular pores of his skin. Compared to all that, controlling his vocal cords was almost laughably easy.
The calculations were more troublesome. Yet Lin Mu’s mind was far stronger than an ordinary cultivator’s. He had studied formations, Alchemy, and complex Spatial techniques including teleportation, that needed millions of equations and calculations at times.
As such calculating distance and angles was hardly beyond him.
Lin Mu looked at the stone plate again. "This might actually be useful."
"Perhaps."
"It doesn’t use Qi."
"That is its greatest advantage for you right now." Lin Mu’s expression changed.
The Abyssal Horizon Veil Seal restricted his Qi. Using Immortal Sense for extended periods weakened the seal. Qi transmission carried similar risks. The Frequency Transmission Technique used vitality.
Little Bull could use it openly. More importantly, Lin Mu could communicate secretly without exposing his cultivation. The limited range remained a problem. Still, a hundred meters was enough for many situations.
Lin Mu issued a copy of the technique and a fresh book appeared before him.
He picked it up.
"An ancient communication technique from before Qi cultivation." Lin Mu smiled slightly. "Looks like the outdated techniques are the ones I’m finding most useful."
Xukong chuckled. "That is because you keep putting yourself in situations where modern methods are inconvenient."
Lin Mu thought about his current circumstances. He was disguised as a dead mortal. His cultivation was sealed by an ancient spatial seal. He had infiltrated one of the three greatest sects of the Eastern Immortal Court.
And most of all, he was searching for a hidden vault whose location was unknown. Lin Mu slowly nodded. "Fair enough."
He stored the Frequency Transmission Technique with the other manuals. For the first time since entering the support section, Lin Mu felt genuinely pleased with what he had found.
The Gentle Door Opening Technique could stay on its shelf.
Though considering the Wild Peak disciples, Lin Mu suspected it probably had far more practitioners than the ancient Frequency Transmission Technique.
