Chapter 4006: A Successful Act

Chapter 4006: A Successful Act

The darkness of the Void surrounded Lin Mu for several breaths.

There was no light, sky, earth or the sea here. Only an endless expanse of profound darkness filled with spatial turbulence that could tear an ordinary Immortal apart in an instant.

Threads of chaotic spatial energy moved through the darkness like invisible currents, occasionally producing faint distortions that could be sensed even without Immortal Sense. Lin Mu walked through it calmly.

His expression was completely different from the one he had worn moments ago. The arrogance of Mengli Zhenyu had faded from his face, replaced by his usual calm and thoughtful expression.

He looked around at the darkness and smiled faintly. "The rift certainly looked convincing."

He glanced at the ring on his finger. The spatial rift he had opened in front of everyone had been nothing more than an illusion created through precise spatial manipulation. Lin Mu had never actually shattered space with his fist.

He had simply used the ring to open a spatial passage at the exact moment his fist moved. With his understanding of the Spatial Dao and his current control over space, making the two actions appear connected was extremely easy.

To the people watching, it had looked as though his fist had shattered the fabric of reality. The cracks and the Void behind it had been real. Even the spatial passage had been real. Only the method had been different from what they believed.

Lin Mu could not help smiling. "That old man probably thinks I have mastered some kind of crude spatial technique."

Xukong’s voice came from within his sea of consciousness. "You could have simply opened the portal without punching."

"I could have." Lin Mu continued walking. "But where would the fun be in that?"

Xukong fell silent for a moment then his voice returned with a hint of amusement. "You are becoming more like the old Zhenyu."

Lin Mu raised an eyebrow. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?"

"Perhaps." Xukong chuckled.

He continued forward until he found the location he wanted. His hand lifted and the space in front of him rippled as a circular portal appeared. Beyond it was a familiar underground environment: The Mad Demon Depths.

Lin Mu stepped through and the moment he returned, the portal closed behind him. The oppressive atmosphere of the ancient prison immediately surrounded him. Lin Mu took a slow breath and his shoulders relaxed slightly.

The battle with Daoist Bone Ruler had been far more demanding than he had expected. He walked a short distance before finding a relatively stable section of the Mad Demon Depths. After checking the surroundings with Spatial Perception, he sat down cross-legged.

Only then did he allow himself to properly examine his condition. His Immortal Qi reserves had fallen considerably and his Immortal Essence had also been depleted by a significant amount. The battle had consumed more than he would have preferred.

Lin Mu closed his eyes.

"The Churning Sea, Shifting Earth Dual Refinement Art might look impressive, but it is still quite inefficient." His voice echoed softly through the empty chamber.

The statement was not meant as an insult toward Zhenyu. In fact, Lin Mu had a certain amount of respect for the technique. The original Zhenyu had created it under extremely difficult circumstances.

He had been trapped within the Mad Demon Depths, surrounded by dangerous experiments, strange formations, insane prisoners, and a seemingly endless supply of baleful energy. He had taken incomplete techniques from Wild Peak and combined their principles with his own understanding.

The result had been something unique. But the problem was that the technique demanded an enormous amount of energy. Lin Mu had experienced that weakness firsthand. The Dual Disaster he had just used had indeed been created by the original Mengli Zhenyu.

The old man had developed the technique while trapped inside the Mad Demon Depths. Yet he had never truly been able to unleash it on the scale Lin Mu had just displayed. There had simply never been a proper opportunity.

Lin Mu had therefore reconstructed the technique using his own understanding and the power of his elemental cores. The principles remained faithful, but the execution was his own.

His Earth Core had allowed him to manipulate the earth directly and his Water Core had allowed him to command the water. His Immortal Qi had served as the force that controlled the enormous quantities of elemental matter while his Immortal Essence had been used to imprint his will into the attack.

That final aspect was particularly important.

Without Immortal Essence, the earth and water would simply have been enormous quantities of natural matter. They would possess weight and momentum, which would bring forth destructive force, yet they would lack the coordination required for the Dual Disaster.

Immortal Essence allowed Lin Mu’s will to penetrate them. It made the mountains respond as though they were extensions of his body and it allowed the water to flow according to his intent.

It was the foundation that transformed an enormous quantity of ordinary material into a coordinated killing technique.

Lin Mu opened his eyes.

"Still too wasteful." He slowly shook his head.

The numbers were already clear in his mind. The Dual Disaster had consumed nearly fifty percent of his available Immortal Qi along with thirty percent of his Immortal Essence. That was an enormous expenditure for a single technique.

The scale had certainly been impressive as the entire battlefield had been transformed. The sea had risen into a gigantic tsunami and the earth had transformed into countless mountains.

The two forces had combined into a massive grinding formation capable of breaking through Daoist Bone Ruler’s layers of defenses. Yet Lin Mu could already see several ways to make it more efficient.

’I could probably produce an even stronger attack with less energy if I concentrated the power into a smaller area.’ The thought emerged naturally.

The problem with the Dual Disaster was the sheer scale, as too much energy was being spent on moving too much material. The technique was designed to create a disaster and that made it terrifying. But it also made it inefficient.
