Chapter 4060: Convincing The Grand Elder
The Grand Elder remained silent for a few moments before nodding. "I agree that the Vault Division must be investigated."
Lin Mu felt a surge of satisfaction. ’Good.’
He had successfully redirected the Grand Elder’s attention. More importantly, he had done so using the old man’s own revelations.
The Grand Elder’s expression grew increasingly determined. "If Taegong was acting under orders, we must identify who issued them. We must also determine whether anyone has accessed the restricted repository without authorization."
The Clarity Peak Head nodded. "I can assist with examining the relevant restrictions. If any have been altered, there may still be traces remaining."
Zhenyu gave a satisfied grunt. "Now you’re finally talking sense."
The Grand Elder looked toward him. "Senior, I believe we should return to the Grand Hall and discuss this matter with the appropriate authorities."
Zhenyu’s expression immediately became displeased. "Discuss?"
The Grand Elder paused. "Yes?"
"How much more discussing do you people need?"
The Clarity Peak Head frowned. "Senior, an investigation of this scale requires proper authorization."
Zhenyu stared at her, then he slowly raised his enormous fist. "Child, the Wild Peak already has its authorization."
The two experts looked at the clenched fist.
Zhenyu smiled. "The Closed Fist Doctrine."
The Grand Elder’s expression changed. Lin Mu knew that the old man had finally understood the full implications of the situation. The Wild Peak had already invoked its ancient emergency authority.
And now, with the Grand Elder himself acknowledging that the Vault Division required investigation, there was a very real possibility that the Wild Peak’s actions would gain the support of the highest authorities.
Zhenyu’s smile widened. "So, juniors..." He looked between the Grand Elder and the Clarity Peak Head. "Are you going to help us investigate the traitors, or are you going to stand in our way?"
The Grand Elder fell silent while the Clarity Peak Head looked toward him.
But Lin Mu waited patiently. After all, he had already brought the conversation exactly where he wanted it. The Grand Elder remained silent for several moments as he considered Zhenyu’s proposal.
The ancient body cultivator had presented the situation in a manner that was difficult to refute, especially after everything they had discussed concerning the Hopeful Star Pavilion and the Lightless Hall.
The similarities between the past and present were concerning, and the possibility that another hidden faction was operating within the Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect could no longer be dismissed.
More importantly, the Grand Elder had realized that the matter involving Little Bull and Taegong was potentially far more serious than he had initially believed.
If someone was deliberately weakening the Wild Peak while simultaneously manipulating the Vault Division, then the sect might already be facing an internal threat of considerable magnitude.
And if that threat was connected to the ancient repository, the consequences could be disastrous.
The Grand Elder finally let out a long sigh. "Very well, Senior. I shall stand with you in this matter."
Zhenyu raised his thick white eyebrows. "Oh? You’ve finally decided to use that old head of yours?"
The Grand Elder’s expression stiffened slightly, though he chose to ignore the remark.
"However, I believe we should approach this matter carefully," he continued. "If we openly announce that the Grand Hall is investigating the Vault Division for possible treachery, those responsible will immediately realize that their activities have been discovered."
Zhenyu stroked his beard. "Go on."
"They may destroy evidence, eliminate witnesses, or retreat into hiding. Considering that Taegong has already disappeared, we should assume that at least some of the individuals involved are aware of the danger." The Grand Elder’s expression grew thoughtful.
"Furthermore, if the conspiracy extends beyond the Vault Division, openly mobilizing the Grand Hall might alert individuals whose identities we have yet to discover. We could end up frightening the entire group into concealing itself before we learn anything useful." The man explained.
Lin Mu listened carefully as the Grand Elder’s reasoning was sound.
He had already considered the possibility that Taegong was merely one participant in a much larger conspiracy. The mysterious backer who had assisted him remained unidentified, and there was still no telling how many people were involved.
If the Grand Hall suddenly began investigating every suspicious elder, the conspirators would undoubtedly become more cautious.
’He’s right. An open investigation would probably make things more difficult,’ Lin Mu thought.
The Grand Elder continued, "I believe a two-pronged approach would be more effective."
Zhenyu looked at him. "Explain."
"Senior can continue acting openly as the Interim Peak Head of the Wild Peak. You have already invoked the Closed Fist Doctrine, and the entire sect knows that you intend to investigate the matter concerning Little Bull."
The Grand Elder paused briefly. "That gives you a legitimate reason to question Taegong’s associates, examine the circumstances surrounding Little Bull’s imprisonment, and demand cooperation from the relevant Divisions."
Zhenyu nodded slowly. "And you?"
"I shall investigate from behind the scenes," the Grand Elder replied. "I can quietly examine the Grand Hall’s records, identify individuals connected to Taegong, and determine whether any unusual activities have occurred within the Vault Division."
His eyes narrowed. "I can also investigate whether the ancient repository has been accessed or tampered with. If someone is attempting to obtain its contents, there may be traces that ordinary investigations would overlook."
Lin Mu felt a surge of satisfaction. ’Exactly what I wanted.’
He had originally intended to use Zhenyu’s identity to pressure the sect openly while conducting his own investigations in secret. Now the Grand Elder was offering to handle part of the hidden investigation himself.
That would be extremely useful.
The Grand Elder possessed authority and access that Lin Mu could not easily obtain, even while impersonating Mengli Zhenyu. His position allowed him to examine restricted records and question influential elders without attracting the same suspicion that an outsider might.
More importantly, the Grand Elder was now personally invested in uncovering the conspiracy.
Zhenyu gave an approving grunt. "That’s a sensible plan."
The Grand Elder looked mildly surprised. He had expected some resistance, especially considering how aggressively Zhenyu had been pushing for action. Instead, the ancient body cultivator had accepted the proposal almost immediately.
